!AWOct94/Goodies/Puzzle/!Puzzle/!Help
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

!Help file for !Puzzle v3.18 (11-Jul-94) written by Chris Morison ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You all know the game, classically a picture of a dog chasing a ball on a beach, split into 16 blocks which you spend 20 seconds mixing up, and then 20 minutes trying to put them in the right order until you eventually throw it in a cupboard for another 2 years. You may be familiar with the version on the Applications disc you get with your Acorn. That version is very simple, and it doesn't take long for you to get bored with. This version, however, is loads more fun because it's main advantage is that it can use any sprite as the picture, and can even time you and record the shortest times. NB Instructions on how to complete these type of puzzles cannot be found in this file, but you may like to read the help file that comes with the game !Puzzle on the Applications disc you got free with your Acorn. Memory requirements. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The program itself only takes 64K, but the sprites take up extra memory, depending on the size and mode of the sprite. The minimum requirement is 16K to use the built in numbers and a small width, but using larger sprites will need more memory. Loading the game ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To load the game simply double click on it's icon in the directory viewer. If not enough memory is available then the game will inform you and quit, leaving the desktop un-altered. You will notice that it's icon has appeared on the right of the icon bar. Clicking on this icon has the following effects. Select : Open the puzzle window. Menu : Open the menu. Adjust : Open the picture viewer. The main menu ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Info Display program information. Shuffle Shuffle the board Puzzle Open/Close the puzzle window. View Open/Close the picture viewer. Timer Open/Close the timer. Help Opens the help sub-menu. Pictures Opens the pictures sub-menu. Colours Allows the colours to be changed. Width Allows the width of the puzzle to be altered. Save Saves the current settings (including the window positions) Quit Quits the game. This menu can be accessed by clicking MENU on any of the games windows or icon bar icon. Help ~~~~ The game will show you which blocks are in the right place by drawing a grid and colouring the blocks different colours. The grid can either be in the blank space of the game or in a separate window. The colours of the blocks can be changed from the Colours sub-menu on the main menu. This program supports interactive help. Pictures ~~~~~~~~ Pictures can be loaded in two ways: 1 : They can be copied into the directory pointed to by <PuzPic$Dir> in which case they will appear in the Pictures sub-menu and can be clicked on. 2: They can be dragged onto any window belonging to the game or it's icon bar icon. When a sprite is loaded, you may be informed that you don't have enough memory to use it, and the program will use numbers and a width of 3. If the mode you are in will lower the quality of the picture, you will be told which mode you should use, but the program should cope with any sprite in any mode (even VGA modes). The numbers sprites do not look as they should in mode with more than 256 colours. Once a sprite is loaded, it's full path is remembered, so if the settings are saved it will automatically be loaded. To alter the directory listed in the Pictures sub-menu then alter the varaible <PuzPic$Dir> in the !Run file, possibly to point to your clip art collection. Playing the game - The main window ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The game is played from the main window, which contains the current sprite split into blocks. To move blocks into the blank space simply click with SELECT or ADJUST on the block. Whole rows and columns can be moved if you click on any block in the same row or column as the blank space. Clicking with SELECT or ADJUST in the blank space will highlight the block which belongs in the blank space. If you solve the puzzle, you will be informed of the time taken, and possibly requested to type in you name if you beat the lowest time for the selected width. You will not be able to move any of the blocks until the puzzle is shuffled. The position of this window is saved when the settings are saved. The view window ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The view window will contain a copy of the current sprite, scaled to fit into the window perfectly. The sprite can be scaled by resizing the window using the resize icon in the bottom-right of the window. The position of this window is saved when the settings are saved. The timer window ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The timer window shows you how long the main window has been open since the last shuffle, and the percentage of the blocks which are in the correct place. You can also the access the shortest times window from the timer window. The position of this window is saved when the settings are saved. Altering the number of blocks in the puzzle ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The puzzle can be made harder by increasing the number of blocks along one side of the puzzle. This can be done by altering the number in the width window (which is accessed from the main menu) and clicking on OK. Dragging utility ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you click SELECT in any of the windows, and keep SELECT held, then a hand will replace the normal pointer and the window under the hand can be moved simply by moving the mouse. This will only work if the point under the pointer is not an active icon, ie isn't an OK button. It will not work if the pointer is in the same row or column as the blank space.
