You may distribute this program freely.

Overview: !League is a Desktop application for keeping track of league
football results. Just enter the results as they happen and your machine
will arrange the clubs into a league table.  You can even change the date on
the table, to see how it looked at the end of any day during the season!

RISC OS: !League will work just fine under RISC OS 2, but only under RISC OS
3 does it look nice - and then it looks really good :-)

Operation: To load in an existing League Table, double click its directory
viewer icon and it will be loaded into the !League application.

To create a new League Table, choose the 'New league' option in the !League
iconbar menu. In the window which appears, adjust the number of teams in the
league to the required number and then enter the names of the teams. Also
enter a title for the league, and provide a start date. The start date is
important because you will not be able to input any results dated earlier
than it. If you are starting with a blank table at the start of the season,
you may now click OK and the league will be set up. If you wish to start
mid-season, select the corresponding radio-button and click OK. You will be
given the chance to enter the details of the league as it stands on the
evening of your start date. For each team, enter the relevant details: Games
won, games drawn, games lost and goal difference. When you have finished,
click OK and the league will be set up.

To enter results, choose the 'New results' option in the !League menu. You
will then be able to set the date for the result, and enter the result
itself. For instance, click Liverpool , 4 , Manchester United , 0. This will
record the result: Liverpool 4 v 0 Manchester United When you get good at it
(I'm getting there) you will be able to put in the results while they are
being read out during Final Score on Grandstand! There are some special
points to note: When it is time to enter a score, the caret will appear at
the foot of the window. If the score is so large that there isn't a button
to click for it, simply type it in and press RETURN. There is also a
'Special' option. When you have selected the first team, select 'Special'
and you will be given some unusual options which you will probably never
use. The special instruction will apply to that particular team as of the
date specified. Try, for example, deducting two points from Manchester
United.

When you have finished entering the results, select the 'Update' button in
the league window. The purpose of this button is to avoid wasting time
redrawing the league every time you enter one result.

Changing the date: You can view the league table as it was at any stage
during the season by changing the date at the top of the League Table
window.

Saving: As usual - use the menu.

Quitting: As usual - use the menu.

Known niggles:
Although the window becomes "starred' when you add information, it doesn't
DO anything yet when you try to quit or load another league over it. I'll change
that soonm but definitely not in time for the start of the 1994/5 season, so don't
hang about for it. I've got A-levels to deal with first.

Me: I usually put a scanned picture of me in my applications (though come to
think of it I've only got round to releasing one, and that was
portrait-less), but this time I decided not to bother... If you want to see
what I look like, you will either have to have SKY TV or live in the Central
or Anglia ITV regions.
If you have SKY, you will be able to see me on Blockbusters on 21st and 22nd
June 1994. If you are in the Central or Anglia regions, I'm on Blockbusters
on 8th and 9th August 1994.

PLEASE don't write telling me how stupid I was not to get all the answers
right. The fact is I knew most of the ones I didn't answer (Yeoman for
instance) and we could have done quite well. I just didn't want to sound a
fool if it was wrong. The one I remember getting wrong (Oxalic acid) was
inexcusable - I'm an A-level chemistry student. When we finally got knocked
out, it was INCREDIBLY close. It was a "What F ..." and I pressed the
buzzer. I expected Bob to ask me for the answer, but it wasn't to be - Alan
got there first. If you have a video digitiser of sufficient quality, please
analyse this and tell me how much behind I was (It'll be hard to do). I
reckon it's less than one video frame, though I haven't seen it yet.

As for my mascots (the three owls you will see in front of me), they were
nameless until an hour before we were filmed. Hence one of the little ones
got named Alan, after one of the people sharing our dressing-room. Little
did I know that he'd be the contestant we'd come up against. They were not
that lucky after all.

Look out for Aditi (a solo competitor) who was on about 4 episodes before
us, and admire her style in pressing the buzzer. During lunch on the day she
went on, she asked me "Should we call him Bob, or Mr Hoskyns?" We almost
told Bob (Holness of course) and Aditi knows she'll never live it down.

I hope you enjoy watching. I live in the Carlton region and don't have SKY,
so I probably won't even see it! Anyway I've got my two Further Maths
A-level exams on my two days.
