SibDemo/Read?Me/Reviews/Comp?Shopp

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

HIGH NOTES

The Royal Academy of Music is the latest institution to adopt complete Acorn
computer setups in order to run Sibelius, the expert system that helps
composers produce professionally printed sores. Paul Patterson professor of
composition, is rhapsodic: "When we saw Sibelius 7 it was clear that it was
in a totally different league from anything else".

Starting this term, learning to use Sibelius 7 will be an official part of
the Royal Academy's composition course. "I've bought one myself for home. My
colleague is buying one. They just see this stuff operating and everybody
wants to buy one."

The Academy, in Marylebone Road, London, has bought two Acorn Risc PCs and
will no doubt now discover the wealth of quality software, such as
Impression Publisher, that was overlooked in its previous limitation to
conventional PC clones. The Royal Academy is no stranger to music
technology: it's an official endorser of Yamaha's Clavinova range of digital
pianos and also has a Roland room full of electronic music. Besides
classical and avant-garde composition, courses are offered in rocknroll
and commercial 'media music' by the likes of Michael Kamen, who scored the
James Bond files.

Sibelius was launched last autumn, and this column (issue 70) featured the
first published review. I immediately nominated it for Computer Shopper's
1994 award as the best new software on any platform, nd since then, it has
been increasingly acknowledged as the world's leading computer program for
editing and printing music. It is widely used by top composers and
publishers, and such famous names as Faber Music and Oxford University Press
have published scores produced by it. John Rutter, OUP's most successful
composer, says: "I never though I would abandon pen and ink, but Sibelius
7's versatility, speed and ease of use have completely won me over." Even
the organist at my local church has bought an Archimedes in order to use
Sibelius to write arrangements for his choirs.

Paul Patterson admitted disappointment when, after seeing Sibelius
demonstrated in June, he was told that it runs only on Acorn computers. "I
had just spend vast sums on IBM-compatibles. I had heard of Acorn, but I had
no idea it was such a Rolls-Royce type of machine. Well, I've just sold one
of out 486s, and while my wife was away one weekend I sold hers!"

The Royal Academy formerly tried to teach its pupils to use Score which runs
in DOS on IBM clones. "it's in the stone age compared with Sibelius,"
Patterson said. "Students found Score so difficult the dropout rate was
something like 98 percent. With Sibelius I was actually working within 20
minutes of getting it out of the box. You couldn't do that in 20 hours with
Score." Patterson has already written a songbook to go with his musical
animation of Roald Dahl's Little Red Riding Hood, to be performed at
Christmas.

His academy colleague Nigel Clarke wrote 20 pages of full score (a 12-minute
work to be performed by a wind orchestra in Tokyo next year) "without even
looking at the manual". By hand, the score would fill more than 80 sheets of
A3 and cost the publisher almost 2000, not to mention three weeks for
copying and laboriously transposing parts for the 30-odd instruments. He did
a deal for enough of an advance to buy a RiscPC so Sibelius can do all the
work: "I reckon it will give me three or four extra months a year to
compose."

"Both Paul and I have been computer bores for about five years now, and this
is the best package I've ever seen. I'm not sure how much better [Sibelius]
can become, actually, it's so good."

Well, the latest version of Sibelius was exhibited at the Classical Musical
Fair at the Barbican on the first weekend of October. Among the new features
in version 2.5: Midi playback of the printed notes now reads dynamics and
metronome markings (in three languages); one central window defines
typestyles for expression and lyrics; and any of the Risc PC's graphic modes
can be used while editing the score (if you need 16 million colours). And
thanks to a bit of tweaking by the authors, identical twins Ben and Jonathan
Finn, Sibelius is even faster. They have just returned from Poland with
another clutch of orders for Sibelius and for Acorn machines to run it.

One of the things I like most about being an Acorn nut instead of lost in
the clone crowd is illustrated in the Readme file for Sibelius. It lists
little improvements that have been incorporated: "Requested by Chris
Hinkins." "Requested by Jenny Fisher". Can you get such personal contact
with he American megacorporations that push so-called 'industry-standard'
software?
