Sunday Times 10 April 1994 (Excerpts from a longer article) MUSIC FOR PUBLISHERS' EARS A computerised music publishing system developed by two brothers in Cambridge could become an international standard, according to the managing editor of Music Sales, one of the world's largest music-publishing companies, writes Paul Lewis. The new software, called Sibelius, is written by twins Jonathan and Ben Finn, computer buffs who learned their music in the King's College choir. The software scores over its American rivals - Coda Finale for the Apple Macintosh and Score from San Andreas Press for IBM-compatible machines - because it is so fast and so easy to use, according to Mike Sheppard of Music Sales. Sheppard recommends it to his composers because other systems take months to learn before even simple music can be produced. Sibelius can be used at once by a novice. John Rutter writes choral music and is a house musician for the Oxford University Press. He has used Sibelius for a year. "I have spent my life putting music on paper by hand, so it is a dramatic change for me," he says. "I am not a computer person but it is as easy to use as pen and ink.
