Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk --------------------------- October 1991 ------------ This is the October '91 issue of Archimedes World. All the software in this issue has been carefully chosen to give you a balanced selection of entertaining and practical items. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully. All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1991. They may not be copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. They should NOT be distributed as Public Domain. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. !Othello is public domain. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original. Archived The '!AWOct91' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWOct91' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying When the '!AWOct91' application icon is dragged to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software from the RAM disk it will need to be set to 1500k. Four megabytes of memory is required to comfortably run the software from there. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by selecting the 'Open viewer' items from the menu and dragging the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied across. They can then be loaded without using the disk menu. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our built-in text displayer module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs, read any instructions and open program directory viewers. Each item on the main menu leads to a sub-menu. Click the select button once over the icon to select a menu item. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. Each sub-menu contains one or more programs. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. When you select the 'Open viewer' option a directory viewer will open up on the desktop. This allows you to run the programs by double-clicking or you can drag them to another directory viewer to copy them onto another disk. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu which is usually the main one. The Demos 4Mation have produced some of the most innovative software titles around. Now they have come up with a new wave of Archimedes applications which take full advantage of the computer's capabilities. The smArt demo on this disk introduces the highly original idea of smart art. Run the demo by clicking on the 'Run !smArt' menu item. Now select 'Open viewer' and load one of the example files by dragging it to the smArt icon on the Icon Bar. You will quickly learn that almost any part of the image can be altered. Parts of the picture can be added, removed or exchanged for other things. Micropower and Archimedes World present an exclusive playable demo of Zelanites The Onslaught. Two full levels are available to play through. Once you have seen the great graphics and experienced the compulsive gameplay you will not be able to resist purchasing the full game. To get the demo working you need to prepare a blank formatted disk. Now open the 'Zelanites' archive by double clicking on its icon. A viewer will open up showing three icons; !Message, !ReadMe and !Zelanites. Drag these icons to the viewer of the blank disk and the files will then be de-archived as they are copied across. Disk swapping can be avoided if you create a 500K RAM disk and drag the icons to there first. You can then drag them from there to the blank disk. This will probably cause 'No room in RMA' error reports on 1MByte machines but those with 2Mbytes or more will be OK. Now all you have to do is reset your machine and double click on the !Zelanites icon. If you have problems running the demo, read the helpful tips in the !ReadMe file by double clicking on its icon. The Programs Sidewinder is the new fast action shoot 'em up fom Aaron Timbrell, the author of Tacticus. In this space adventure you must battle against endless waves of alien ships and navigate through the increasingly complex space corridors. Special challenge levels give you a chance to bump your score even higher. With each progressive level the aliens become more and more furious, testing your reflexes to the limit. The OL System is a fractal curve laboratory which enables you to experiment with different kinds of fractals. Create your own curves by using the special curve description language built into the program. Curves can be saved together in libraries and the resultant images can be saved to disk in compressed form. They can then be displayed in sequence with a shimmering colour effect. A Disk Sector Editor is a powerful and potentially 'lifesaving' tool. If you have lost an important file on a currupted disk and want to retrieve it then !DZap will help. Or if you simply want to make low level changes to a disk's contents then !DZap will do it with no fuss. The number of Dot Repeats per Inch setting on a dot matrix printer affects markedly the final results you get when printing grey scale graphics. !RPI allows you to select the horizontal and vertical RPI settings for your printer driver. The result is improved contrast in a 256 colour image printout. Games fans will be thrilled to find another set of cheats on this disk. They will let you get the most out of such games as Twin World and IronLord. BEWARE! Some cheats alter the game disk so only use them on backups. Archimedes World accepts no responsibility for damage to disks caused by these cheats. The !CardBase application published in the March 91 issue of Arc World was badly bugged and so we present an updated version with (hopefully) all the bugs removed. There is a short manual detailing all of the improvements. For full documentation please refer back to the March 91 magazine. It is still available as a back issue if you do not already have a copy. Read the articles in the magazine to find out what the programs are for. To fill the spare space on this cover disk we have included a Public Domain program called !Othello. It is included on the disk as a free piece of software. As it is public domain you are free to copy the program as many times as you like and to give copies to whoever you choose. This only applies to the public domain software on this disk. Earn �800 From Your Program We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. The only limit which we apply to software for the cover disk is that it has to be less than 300k in size.
