Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

HOW TO USE THIS DISC ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TO cram over 1Mb of data on to this disc we have placed most of the programs into ARCHIVES. They are unpacked using the !SparkPlug program. If you want to unpack ALL the files on this Micro User disc you will need at least two formatted discs. Please refer to your copy of the User Guide for instructions on how to format the discs. Follow these instructions exactly to learn how to unpack a single file. TECHNICAL WORDS USED: ICON : A little picture on screen. ICON BAR : The light-coloured strip at the bottom of the screen. STEP A: Create RAM disc ----------------------- 1. Point at the Archimedes icon on the far right of the icon bar at the bottom of the screen, using mouse and pointer. 2. Click the middle mouse button a menu will appear with the title "Task". 3. Point at the "Task display" option using mouse and pointer. 4. Click the left mouse button to select this option. The "Tasks" window will appear. 5. Point at the down arrow [�] in the bottom-right of this window using mouse and pointer. 6. Press the left mouse button and hold it down until the window stops scrolling. 7. Locate the line called "RAM disc". 8. Using the mouse and pointer, point at a position about one inch to the right of the figure "0K". 9. Click the left mouse button, a red bar will appear stretching to the pointer, the figure will change and a chip icon appears on the icon bar with the word "RAM" below it. 10. Point at the end of the new red bar with the mouse and pointer. 11. Press and hold down the left mouse button and move the mouse and pointer to the right, dragging the bar out until the figure reads "320K". You have now created a RAM disc. 12. Using the mouse and pointer, point at the Tasks window close icon [�] at the top-left of the window. 13. Click the close icon using the left mouse button and the Tasks window will disappear. 14. Using the mouse and pointer, point at RAM disc icon on the icon bar. 15. Click the icon once with the left mouse button. The RAM disc contents window will appear -- it is empty. 16. Using the mouse and pointer, point at the title of the RAM disc window, where it says "RAM:$". 17. Press and hold down the left mouse button. 18. Move the mouse and pointer down as close to the middle of the icon bar as you can get. 19. Release the left mouse button. NOTE: On a 1Mb machine you will not be able to run programs while you still have the RAM disc. You must copy the files on to your spare disc first, reset the machine and then run the programs. STEP B: Unpacking a file Double drives ------------- 1. Insert Applications disc 1 (Apps1) into drive 1. 2. Point at drive 1 icon using mouse and pointer. 3. Click with left mouse button to show Apps1 disc contents. 3a. Using the mouse and pointer, point at the Apps1 disc contents window close icon [�] at the top-left of the window. 3b. Click the close icon with the left mouse button and the disc contents window will disappear. 4. Insert Micro User disc into drive 0. 5. Point at drive 0 icon using mouse and pointer. 6. Click with left mouse button to show Micro User disc contents. Continue from step 8 for single drive (ignore any and all references to swapping discs). Single drive only ----------------- 1. Insert Applications disc 1 (Apps1) into drive. 2. Point at drive icon using mouse and pointer. 3. Click with left mouse button to show Apps1 disc contents. 3a. Using the mouse and pointer, point at the Apps1 disc contents window close icon [�] at the top-left of the window. 3b. Click the close icon, the disc contents window will disappear. 4. Remove Apps1 disc. 5. Insert Micro User disc. 6. Point at drive icon using mouse and pointer. 7. Click with left mouse button to show Micro User disc contents. 8. Point at the !SparkPlug icon in the disc contents window using mouse and pointer. 9. Double-click (two mouse clicks rapidly) the !SparkPlug icon using the left mouse button. 10. Follow the on-screen instructions to swap discs as they occur. Owners of the BBC A3000 will need to click the Okay button after the required disc has been inserted, other machines recognise insertion automatically. 11. The !SparkPlug icon will now appear on the right of the icon bar. 12. Point at the icon, called Listings, in the disc contents window using mouse and pointer. 13. Double-click (two mouse clicks rapidly) the Listings icon. 14. There will be a short delay while !SparkPlug reads the contents of Listings then a window opens up to reveal the contents of the archive. 15. Point at the first icon in the archive contents window using mouse and pointer. 16. Press the left mouse button and hold it down. A coloured box will appear around the icon. 17. WITHOUT lifting your finger off the button, move the mouse until the pointer is directly over the middle of the open RAM disc contents window (NOT the RAM icon on the icon bar). The dotted box will move with the pointer. 18. Release the mouse button. 19. There will be a delay while !SparkPlug unpacks the file from the archive. You may be instructed to swap discs, please do so. 20. Remove The Micro User disc from drive 0. 21. Insert a blank disc into drive 0. 22. Click the drive 0 icon to show disc contents. 23. Following the procedure described in 16 to 18, drag the file in the RAM disc contents window to the blank disc contents window. You have now removed the file from the archive and it may be run simply by double-clicking it. On a 1Mb machine you will probably need to reset the machine to free enough memory. The error message from Basic that indicates that it doesn't have enough room is: No writable memory at this address. ============================================================= POSSIBLE PROBLEMS ----------------- 'Disc full' error when copying from Archive to RAM disc. This means the ram disc is not big enough. Unfortunately you cannot alter the size of the ram disc when there are files in it. Either: Delete all the files, return to the Tasks window and make the RAM disc bigger. Or: Press Control+Reset and start again, make the RAM disc bigger than 320K. ============================================================= 'File "....!System.ScrapFile" not found' when copying from Archive to RAM disc. This means that the file you are trying to unpack is bigger than the available space on the Apps1 disc. !SparkPlug uses this 'scrapfile' as temporary workspace when unpacking a file. Unfortunately !SparkPlug doesn't give the right error message at this point. The solution is to format a new disc and give it the name 'System'. Now copy the file !System from the Apps1 disc to the new System disc.
