This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

First-time Setup
----------------

Newsbase is designed to be self-configuring, as far as possible. The very
first time you run it, it will first attempt to determine as much
configuration information as it can, such as the most appropriate transport
to use, the hostname, and any existing newsgroups and usernames from a
ReadNews-style news database. It then opens the main Setup window for you to
complete the configuration.

News and configuration data are kept in their own application directory,
called !NewsDir. If this is not present when Newsbase starts up, a window is
opened to inform you of the fact. Another window is then opened, from which
you can drag a new !NewsDir to a filer window. You can do one of two things
at this point - either locate a pre-existing !NewsDir with the Filer, and
close the "create !NewsDir" window, or you can drag the icon to a filer
winodw to create a new !NewsDir. It is recommended that this be placed on
the same device as the spool area for incoming news and mail (eg, for use
with !TCPIP, it should reside on the same disk as !TCPIPUser or !MailDir).

You can force Newsbase to start with the main setup window open by holding
left-ALT down while starting. Alternatively, if the program is already
running, you can obtain the setup windows by selecting "Setup..." from the
iconbar menu.

Iconbar & menu
--------------

The Newsbase iconbar menu has the following choices:

Setup - access the site, general, user, group or transport setup windows
Queues - run the queue display application
Debatch - process new mail and news (if automatic debatch is switched off)
Expire - expire old news (if automatic expiry is switched off)

In addition, clicking with SELECT on the newsbase icon opens the Newsbase
status window; and clicking with ADJUST opens the main setup window.

Site Configuration
------------------

These are the settings you can choose from:

1. Site control panel

Hostname
 Enter your (fully-qualified) hostname here, or click on Initialise to have it
 automatically filled-in.

Mailname
 Fill this in to the name you wish to use for mail. Normally, this should
 be the same as "hostname" above, but in some situations a different name
 might be desired. If in doubt, leave this the same as the normal hostname,
 though.

Remote
 Enter your remote site's hostname here. For !TCPIP, this generally
 contains the name of your smtp gateway, if one is configured. If you don't
 have one configured in !TCPIP, then it may still be helpful to fill one
 in here, as sending mail to more than one person will be more efficient.

Transport
 Select the transport type for news and mail. Supported options at present
 are "ka9q" (!TCPIP), "Taylor" (uucp), and "Uucp" (alternative uucp). Other
 transports are in development, including Acorn TCP/IP, SOUP, and QWK (for
 BBS discussion groups).

Organization
 You can enter an organization string here. If present, it will be supplied
 to Newsbase client programs (newsreaders).

Timezone
 Normally this will be read correctly from the operating system, but you
 can also alter the value via a menu. The menu currently only contains
 whole-hour timezone; if you are in a timezone which includes a fraction
 of an hour offset from GMT, the automatic timezone detection should
 operate correctly.

Initialize
 Click on this button to have newsbase automatically set up certain
 parameters for your site - the hostname, remote hostname, timezone, etc.
 For ka9q, the hostname, etc, are deduced from the autoexec/config files
 (the remote hostname is the smtp gateway, and is used by newsbase when
 sending mail).

General Control Panel
---------------------

This group of controls lets you control various aspects of Newsbase
operation.

Automatic debatch
 Enables automatic debatch of new news/mail files. If this is switched off,
 new files are only processed when "Debatch" is chosen from the icon bar
 menu.

Keep logfile
 Causes NewsBase to maintain an event log in !Newsdir.Newsbase.log. Events
 logged include: new mail/news files processed, new mail arrivals; mail
 and news sent; errors; groups created or deleted, and other information.
 The logfile is updated once every minute (so examining it may not always
 show very recent events). It is also periodically trimmed, discarding all
 but the last 10 days worth of entries.

Fast debatch
 When set, newsbase will attempt to perform more work between wimp-polls.
 It also omits some disaster-recovery procedures (without 'fast debatch',
 newsbase maintains more information on-disk about the current debatch,
 so that it can be restarted from the same point after a crash).

Reply to Return-Receipt
 Permits Newsbase to automatically respond to "Return-Receipt-To" mail
 headers.

Retain batches
 If set, processed batches are moved to a holding area rather than deleted
 immediately. Processed batches are held for 2 days, and then deleted.
 NOTE: the default setting for this is *on* - if you can't afford the
 disk space to retain batches, be sure to switch it off.

Compress articles
 With this selected, newsbase will keep articles in compressed form on
 disk. You can set a threshold below which articles are not compressed
 (compressing articles smaller than about 2k results in little saving
 of space; however if disk space is short, reducing this to 1k or so
 may still be worthwhile). Compression is performed using the Squash
 module in RISC OS.

Modgroup path
 Sets the gateway by which moderated news posts should be relayed. Unless
 you know what you're doing, this should be left set to the default,
 "uunet.uu.net". If you have problems with posting to moderated groups
 (postings being returned to you, for example), you could try changing this
 setting. Choose the site nearest to you (eg, demon users should
 probably use "pipex.co.uk").

Use mail gateway for news postings
 Select this if you want to send news via a mail-to-news gateway, rather
 that directly as news.
 You can enter the gateway name in the field below this selection, or
 obtain a menu of possible choices. Some automatic substitutions are possible
 in this field; "%g" is replaced by the group name, and "%G" is replaced by
 the group name, with periods replaced by hyphens (eg, "demon-answers").

Announce new arrivals
 When set, newsbase opens a window to announce new arrivals. It can be set
 to announce mail only, or both mail and news; and also to beep.

Default reader
 Drag your preferred newsreader to the writable icon to make newsbase treat
 it as the default. When selected as default, newsbase will tell your reader
 to open a list of groups, (or attempt to start it, if not already running),
 when you click on the "Read" button in the new arrivals announcement
 window.

Minimum disk space
 Enter the threshold for the free space (on the disk containing !NewsDir), 
 below which Newsbase should suspend operation. The default is 1Mbyte, but
 it may be set as low as 128Kbytes. If your disk space permits, setting a
 higher value (such as the 1M default) may be safer, as RISC OS is prone
 to causing bad disk maps during intense disk activity on nearly-full
 disks. If you do suffer from a bad disk map, you can cure it with the
 shareware utility "fsck", available from HENSA and other ftp sites.

Transport Setup Window
----------------------

This window lets you remove unwanted transports from newsbase, or run
a setup utility for a particular transport (none yet available though).

The Groups Window
-----------------

The controls in this window allow you to add or remove groups from your
newsfeed, and maintain the news database.

Default expiry
 Sets the default expiry time for all groups, in days

Newgroup history
 Sets the expiry time for "newgroup" information (newsbase will discard
 information about newly-created groups older than this period).

Process cancels
 Enables automatic processing of "cancel" control messages. "Supersedes"
 headers, a specialized form of cancel, are always processed at present.

Ignore 'chef' groups
 This option automatically ignores groups of the form
 "alt.foo.bar.baz.baz.baz". Named after the moderately infamous
 "alt.swedish.chef.bork.bork.bork" group, which has spawned hundreds of
 imitator but spurious groups in the alt hierarchy. Selecting this option
 ensures that groups of this form will not be automatically created, nor
 will you be asked if you wish to add them by the New Groups dialogue.

Ignore "Expires:"
 Newsbase normally honours the contents of an "Expires:" article header, if
 present, rather than expiring such articles according to the configured
 expiry time. If this option is set, these headers are ignored, and the
 articles expired normally. This option does not take effect retrospectively;
 it only affects newly-debatched articles.

Keep threading information
 You probably want to leave this "on" normally. When enabled, Newsbase will
 keep threading information (references headers) in the group index files.
 This makes the index files about 50% larger, so if you are sure you don't
 want to use this feature, it can be switched off (current Newsbase
 newsreaders don't use this, but if you can afford the disk space, it is
 better to leave it enabled - otherwise you will need to reindex all groups
 before you can use threading).

Automatic expiry
 Enables automatic expiry of old news.
 This should generally be left on. Set a suitably large expiry time if you
 want articles to be kept for some time.
 You can also choose whether newsbase expires news only (the default), or
 all types of 'group' (news, mail and folders). I would consider it bizarre
 to expire email, but the option is there if wanted!

 You may also specify a time of day when you prefer expiry to take place.
 This is most useful if your computer is left running 24hours/day. If a
 scheduled automatic expiry is missed due to Newsbase not running, you
 will be asked whether you want to perform it the next time you start
 Newsbase.

Rescan
 This scans the news database for existing groups and adds them to NewsBase's
 internal lists. In general, this should not need to be invoked manually.

New Groups
 This opens the Newgroup dialogue box, which lets you step through the list
 of newly-available groups. This may not operate with all transports (it
 does with ka9q, but is probably not applicable to uucp).
 Click on "Skip" to move to the next group in the list, "Add" to add it to
 your active list, or "Catch Up" to skip the entire list.

Group-specific options:

Group
 Enter a group specification in this icon, or click MENU to select a group
 from the entire list. Group specifications may be wildcarded wih the "*"
 character, to perform an operation on several groups at once.

 You can either view the "current list" of groups (those actually present
 on disk in the !NewsDir database) or the "active list" (those present in
 the newsfeed).

Add/Remove
 These buttons add or remove the displayed group both from the active list
 and the transport-specific group list (eg xxxGroup for ka9q).

Delete
 This button removes a group or groups from disk, and from the 'current list'.
 You will be asked for confirmation.

Info
 Reports whether Newsbase thinks the selected group is moderated or not.
 Note: you can only set the moderated status for groups which exist on
 disk, in the database. You can query the status of other groups, but
 not alter and store them.

Index
 Generates new index files for the selected group(s).
 Index regeneration is usually automatic if required, but can be started
 manually using this button should an index file be found to be inconsistent
 with the news database (for example, if news files have been deleted
 from the command line or filer rather than via newsbase commands).
 Note: this version of Newsbase will only index the first 3000 articles
 present in any group.

Expire
 Starts an expiry run on the selected group(s).

Expiry
 Sets the expiry time (in days) for the selected group.

Moderated group
 This lets you set whether a group is moderated or not. Normally Newsbase
 will set this correctly for you, but the default setting can be overridden.

The Users window
----------------

This window allows configuration of certain choices on a per-user basis.
For example, whether posting is allowed, or whether outgoing news or
mail should be retained.

The special user "default", is used as a "template" for newly-created
users - its parameters are copied to those of the new user.

The "group number" is not used for much at this time. However, when
"username control" is enabled, users in group numbers lower than 10 retain
access to all email groups. The default group numbers for root and
postmaster are 0 and 1 respectively; other users inherit a default group
number of 10 from the "default" user. This means that root and postmaster
can read any users mail; other users have access only to their own mail.

Mail forwarding can be set for each user to forward their mail to another
account. The forwarding address can eiter be given as "user@hostname", for
normal forwarding, or as "+user@hostname" to also retain copies of messages
in the local account.

Vacation control allows Newsbase to send preformatted mail automatically
in response to incoming mail, in let them know that you are away (or
something else). You can either drop a text file containing your desired
message body onto the target icon, or click on "Edit" to edit a vacation
message. Clicking on "Clear" deletes any vacation message. You cannot set
a vacation message for root or postmaster.

The vacation handler will not reply to correctly set-up mailing lists or
 mail bounce messages.

Please be very careful not to set a vacation handler inadvertently!
Clicking on "Edit" alone will set a default handler.

There are also some "global" options:

Control access by username
 With this set on, newsbase will not permit non-privileged users to open
 email groups belonging to other users.

Keep outgoing
 Determines whether copies of outgoing mail and news are filed in the
 pseudo-groups "Email.<username>.outgoing.mail|news".

Allow news deletion by users
 If set, a client newsreader is allowed to delete articles, otherwise deletion
 is prevented. Deletion of email or folder files is always permitted, however.

Filters
-------

This lets you set up some simple filters to act on incoming news and mail.
You can apply one of several actions to messages or articles if they meet
certain conditions.

To set a filter, click on "New", and fill in the fields for: type, condition,
and action.

Type can take 4 values: Unset, News, Mail, and Any. This makes the filter
apply to news only, mail only, or both mail and news.

Condition can act on the To, From, Newsgroups, Subject, or several other
headers of an article. You can start the condition by selecting the one you
want from a menu (click MENU over the writable icon). Then complete the
condition by entering the string which should be matched in the header. This
is a case-insensitive substring match, so a condition of "From allan" would
be triggered by a mail message from "ALLAN@mnhep.hep.umn.edu".

You may enter up to 3 conditions for each filter, linking them with AND/OR
logic conditions.

Finally, enter the action which should be taken. This can be one of "Junk",
"Kill", "Submit" or (for mail only) "Redirect". Again, you can start
entering the action from a menu. Junk and Kill are complete in themselves -
with Junk, the article/message is redirected to either "junk" or
"Email.postmaster"; while "Kill" dumps the article/message altogether.
"Redirect" should be given the email group or folder to which the mail
message should be delivered.

When the filter is entered, click on "Set".

Debatching and Expiry
---------------------

This process occurs automatically whenever newly-arrived mail or news files
are detected. You can monitor process with the status window, obtained by
SELECT-clicking on the iconbar icon. Pressing menu give access to two
choices; Pause and Cancel. "Pause" pauses the current operation; "Cancel"
cancels either a debatch or an expiry. In the case of a cancelled debatch,
the newsbase saves recovery information for the aborted debatch, and then
pauses. Selecting "Resume" will recontinue the debatch from where it left
off.

Files are taken directly from the !TCPIP (or other transport-specific)
reception directories. The default filename patterns for ka9q, to take batch
files for processing, are:

though these files can be redefined by editing of the appropriate
transport-specific setup file (so, for example, NewsBase can be altered to
process only news by deleting the entry for !MailDir.spool.mail.text.*,
should anyone strongly wish to keep using the !BM mailer, or to call an
external program for preprocessing of the batch files).


Read-only !NewsDir
------------------

Newsbase 0.53a can operate to a limited extent using a !NewsDir held on a
read-only filesystem. To start Newsbase in this mode, add the switch "-ro"
to it's start-up command - eg, either "Filer_Run !Newsbase -ro", or (in the
!Run file) "run <NewsBase$dir>.!Runimage -ro". Users will be able to read
news and mail, but not post, send mail, reconfigure Newsbase, or do anything
which requires write-access to !NewsDir. A valid, writable, scrap directory
is required for decompression of compressed articles.
