!QTMTrack/Docs/!Help

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

!Help for QTM (Queue The Music) v1.00 by QUANTUM 1993/4 Phoenix/Quantum

                                                       _
   >>> Acorn User - June 1994 <<<                     |_|ISC PC compatible
                                                    --'\------------------
This is the first 'official' release of what has been proven to be the
most accurate ProTracker/Sound Tracker playing module available for Acorn
RiscOS computers. Currenlty only this player application has been released,
although you can expect a very high quality 'QTM' music editor to be
available in the near future.
The purpose of the QTM player (and editor) is to allow RiscOS users to
listen to (and write) music of the same quality heard on the Amiga, without
having to fork out s to buy a less good and harder to use editor/player
package.

Work on QTM has been going on for almost a year and a half now -
optimising code, using faster routines, adding more effects, etc. etc. and I
shall continue working on QTM far into the future - so expect more
releases...
Over the last year QTM has been tested on almost evey possible
combination of RiscOS computer/hardware, so compatibility is almost
garentued... Though if you do find a bug in QTM, send a disc containing the
version of QTM you are using, along with a note of the problem (+details of
your computer system), and a return stamp, and I'll see what I can do...

**** In fact, as for compatibility, at the time of this release QTM ****
**** is the ONLY ProTracker compatible player which works CORRECTLY ****
**** on Acorn's new RISC PC computers. ****

The QTM player itself is provided in a module which is then used by the
desktop interface. This gives a very easy to use setup for everyday use,
along with a wide range of SWI calls which sould keep even the most
technically minded of you happy!!! And also for those 'speed-watchers' of you
out there, QTM is FAST - really FAST - if you don't believe it, read the
Technical help file and test it yourself (mega-accurate speed tester supplied
in 'Extras' dir!!!).
This Acorn User release of QTM v1, comes along with another excellent
piece of music by QUANTUM's musician EXEL - 'Lonely Nights'. If you need
music for your game/(decent) demo, why not drop him a line...

There are several documents with this program, this file you are reading
is the general help file, giving an overview of the QTM module and how to use
the desktop application. Other files give information on the programmer's
interface, special QTM features, song file formats, song effects, etc. These
can all be found in the '!QTMTrack.Docs' directory (ie. Shift+Double-click
on !QTMTrack).

   ***** P-R-O-G-R-A-M-M-E-R-S ***** - read the 'Technical' file NOW!!!

What does the !QTMTrack application do?
---------------------------------------

QTMTrack (Queue The Music) is the desktop interface to the QTM music
player. The application will load and play Protracker compatible music files
when they are run from the desktop.

Using QTM from the desktop
--------------------------

To use the QTM desktop interface, load the !QTMTrack application in the
usual manner, or double click on a music file (which will cause !QTMTrack to
load automatically). Once it has loaded, you should find a hi-fi type icon
has appeared on the right-hand side of the iconbar. This is the QTM icon.
To load a music file into QTM, you can either double-click it, or drag it
onto the QTM icon (or any of the QTM windows - if open). If you are not sure
about what a music file looks like, skip this section and read the section
'Song files and types' (below) or take a look at EXEL's piece of music
supplied with this version of QTM.
When loaded you will need to open the control window - to have access to
the controls for the song. This is done by clicking select on the QTM icon.
The control window contains 7 usable icons (which stick up in a
3d-sort-of-way!!!). The first 5 are the main song controls:

 '<<'-rewind (movesback one sequence)
 ' >'-play (starts QTM playing)
'>>'-fast forward (moves forward one sequence)
'[]'-stop (stops, and resets song to start)
 '||'-pause        (pauses the song)

The next icon (below the rewind icon) is the speaker on/off control. This
icon switches the computer's internal speaker on or off. QTM is perfectly
usable through the internal speaker, though if you want to hear what your
computer is capable of, then connect it to a hi-fi and disable the internal
speaker... (this icon is only of use on pre-A30x0 etc. machines. On the newer
computers (inc. RiscPC), the speaker will switch off automatically when
connected to headphones or a hi-fi).
The last control in the window is the volume bar. This allows you to alter
the overall output volume of QTM. To use the sliding icon, click anywhere
along the dark-grey bar (below the main controls) and the volume button will
jump to where the pointer is, you will then be able to drag this left or
right to alter the volume (left=quieter, right=louder).
One last point about the control window (if you haven't already noticed) -
the window's title is actually set to the current song's title (-which can
be, and usually is, different from the filename).

The contents of the QTM icon bar menu are described below:

       +--------------+
       |Info        ->|_____________
       |Song        ->| Controls    | <- Open controls window
   +-> |Preferences   | Information | <- Open song information window
   | |Quit | Sample List | <- Open sample list window
   | +--------------+ Clear | <- Remove song from memory
   | +-------------+
   |
   Open preferences window

The 'Information' window gives a load of useful(?) information on the
current song:

The song name box displays the song's title (which is the same as
displayed on the Control window's title bar).
The author box uses the QTM-Ultra-mega-author-dector routine 1993/4 PNX,
this is an 'intelligent' author name dector - the point is that in Protracker
format songs, there is no space for an author's name, other than in the
song's sample text space. For this reason, most authors now leave their name
+ a message somewhere in the sample list. There is no way of knowing where in
the sample list the author has put their name, but QTM uses a very accurate
guessing method to attempt to find out. By looking through the sample list
for words such as 'by', 'copyright', etc. and doing some other tests, QTM
almost always finds the correct name. If no name was found '<unknown>' is
displayed instead.
Song types are worked out on loading by QTM - see 'Song files and types'
section for details.
The 'Playing time' box is another first for QTM - by using the special
QTM-Ultra-mega-time-worker-outer routine 1993/4 PNX, QTM can almost
instantly work out the total playing time of the current song, to within a
few 100ths of a second - THIS IS ACCURATE!!! and VERY useful!!!
Module length is the length of the song file on disc etc.
The 'Garbage data' or 'Corrupted' icons are the same icon which changes
it's name depending on the current song's size. If the internal length of the
song (ie. the correct length) is at all different to the file size, QTM will
put a non-zero number in this box to show you how many bytes are either
corrupted or extra (garbage). Songs with garbage data will still play
perfectly on QTM, though songs with some corrupted data (ie. missing samples)
will be played with blank samples in place of the missing ones.
The icon displayed in the right of the window is the song's file-type.

The last 'song' window, the sample list, displays a list of all the song's
sample information - text, volume (0-64), repeat offset, repeat length, fine
tuning. This window is always worth taking a look at, because (as mentioned
above) authors almost always leave messages in the sample lists!!!

The Preferences window allows you to alter the sound quality used by QTM
(remember: lower quality means QTM uses less processor time, so the result is
a faster computer... but on an Arm3 or better machine there isn't much difference). You can also select whether or not QTM should open the control window automatically on loading a song, and whether the music should remain playing after you quit the QTM application (-quitting the application frees 80K of memory, even if you don't stop the music).
There are four default sound qualities (Very high, High, Medium and Low).
The 'User' box then allows you to enter any (other) value (between 16-96uS,
in multiples of 4) to be used. To enter a User value, click on the User icon,
then type in the new speed, and press return.
To close the Preferences window, click on either Save, Cancel or OK. Save
and OK will keep the selected values (Save will also create a Choices file in
the QTM directory which will be used on later loadings of QTM). Cancel closes
the window and returns the values to their previous settings.

**** Newcomers to QTM - try taking a look at the help file 'Questions' (in
   **** the !QTMTrack.Docs dir...

Song files and file-types
-------------------------

The Protracker compatible music files which QTM plays are now very common
on the Archimedes, even though they where originally designed on the Amiga.
Even now, almost all Protracker music files have been written on the Amiga,
and then 'ported' over to the Arc - basically because of the lack of useable
editors available on RiscOS machines.
In the past there has been confusion over the correct file-type (the
file's desktop icon) for these songs - especially after BASS released
!Symphony - which used the WRONG (non-Acorn approved) file type for
protracker songs. The correct file-type is 'STModule', number &CB6 - the
types not to use are &000 or &001 (as used by !Symphony).
QTM will load files set to any of these types (although if you use the
&000 or &001 types, you are advised to change these (using *Settype, or the
settype option on the RiscOS3 filer menu) to &CB6 - to ensure compatibility).
QTM also loads type &CC5 - the file-type used by Krisalis Software for the
music in their games, which is usually Protracker compatible.

Extras
------

The directory !QTMTrack.Extras contains some programming examples showing
you how easy it is to use QTM's SWIs (see Extras.ReadMe for more info).
