L/Walker1

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Dear Gus,

I would like to answer the comments raised by Gareth Babb on
my HD project:

Thanks for the reiterated warning about the flashing cursor
and compacting- this would make a mess of the drive. I would
like to add that it ispossible to compact the drive without
using screen memory by using thefull *COMPACT command:
COMPACT <SP> <LP> here SP is start page in Hex andLP is the
length in pages in hex. i.e. *COMPACT 20 40 will use memory
from&2000 up to &6000, the start of screen memory in MODE 6.

The ADFS "has to be in the highest priority socket available"
because ithas to service interrupts from the host adaptor
which are reasonably timingdependant. Some ROMs can cause
problems if they are in a higher prioritysocket delaying the
time taken for the service calls to reach the ADFSROM. I
proved this when I was testing the system.

My little digression regarding the AP2 came about because I
took theopportunity to install this software when I was
installing the Electron andhard disc into the PC case. I had
been using Sloggers Expansion 2 Software(8K) until then and
decided to give the PRES AP 2 a go (I wanted the ADFSdisc
Format command). The ROM didn't work in socket 10 but worked
in allother sockets. I checked the addressing on the Plus 1
socket (10) andfound it was wired for 8K EPROMS, the AP2
EPROM being a 27128 (16K) andworking perfectly in my other
16K sockets, I decided to add the missingaddress wiring. The
AP2 worked perfectly when the modification wascomplete. All
I can suggest is my ROM isn't the same in both halves.

Gareth's article in the earlier EUG magazine was in fact the
startingpoint in my Project and I would like to thank him for
giving meinspiration. I am very pleased with my creation and
have been doing mysums on the data transfer rate - approx.
80KB per second. The limitationis the Electron itself as the
drive is capable of transferring five timesthat mount of data
per second but it is still pretty impressive, theentire user
memory can be filled in about a quarter of a second. With
transfer rates like this a clever programmer could possibly
implement"Virtual RAM" - partition a couple of mega-bytes of
the hard disc to use asRAM and the possibilities for quality
applications is endless......dreamon.

Happy new year everyone .. or was that along time ago!! It's
been hecticthese last few months with very little time to
myself let alone getting achance to switch on the Electron.

About six months ago I decided it was time to get into the 32
Bitcomputing world so I looked around to see what was on
offer - the choicewas Acorn, Commodore or an IBM clone. I
use IBM clones at work an knowtheir shortcomings only to well
so that choice was a non starter, Acornwere far to expensive
and trying to buy an older would leave me withproblems of an
out of date operating system - very expensive to update`100.
Then some good!! news came my way, commodore had gone bust.
Thismeant that a large proportion of the Amiga community
would jump ship andbuy PCs producing a large second hand
market. This is exactly whathappened so I picked up a good
deal on an Amiga 1200 with Hard Disc andMonitor.

Now, having had time to play with it, I feel it is far
superior to any PC- its not really a fair comparison as
Windows on the PC is only a 16 bitfront end and can't
multitask (I know IBM has just introduced amultitasking OS
but they are 10 years to late!). A fairer comparisonwould be
to an Archimedies but I have no experience in using one. I
wouldbe interested if anyone tell me a bit about them.

The first program I bought for the Amiga was a BBC emulator -
When loadedit actually looks more like the Electron as it
uses the Mode 6 characterset. Anyway it's rubbish, only
simple programs would run - try anythingother than print to
the screen and it crashes. I will keep a look out forother
versions and let you know how I get on.

11th Feb.

I am now up to 16Mb on my hard drive and found another problem
with Click- When EXTREE is used to show the tree structure of
the disc it reads andstores in its own memory every directory
entry on that disc. It has nowbecome obvious that there is a
memory limitation of around 128 entries. Beyond that limit
and EXTREE starts to overwrite the Diary and crashes, thus
making the EXTREE function useless to me because there is no
way I cankeep the Directory entries below that number.
EXTREE is also used forcopying and moving files, another
function now no longer available for usewith the HD.

User Group magazine arrived yesterday. - A lot of interesting
bit andpieces. Firstly a couple of comments on Gus's article
on ADFS and theUtilities disc - you should learn to use the
Library as it is a very usefulplace to put all your utilities
such as the EFORM command you mentioned. Just keep a LIB
called Library (it's just another directory) on all yourdiscs
and load it with your !BOOT file by having the entry in it
*LIB Library.

I have found Dircopy on the utility disc is very useful, I can
copy theentire EUG disc onto my HD and into any selected
directory with one simplecommand - It not only copies files
but also directories. It is also veryuseful if you want to
make the most of the space on a floppy as you canusually get
at least two issues onto one ADFS (L) disc.

Spelling - I noticed that most the errors that appear are
simple typingmistakes, two characters transposed e.g.
'Editroials' in issue 18 openingmenu. Most of these should
get spotted with a simple proof readingexercise. Tape to
disc - I use two programs for this Sloggers T2P3 and one from
anold Acorn User cassette. I've included the Acorn one as
I've found thatit can copy a great deal of software even
commercial stuff. All AcornUser 8 bit software is now in the
public domain so there should be noproblem in including it on
a future EUG disc. It's easy to use, simplyCHAIN it and
follow the instructions.

Bye for now,

Derek Walker

I HAVE MOVED YOUR ADVERT TO THE SALES SECTION.

SORRY ABOUT THE SPELLING. YES MUCH COULD BE DONE WITH PROOF
READING, I WAS TO BE FRANK RATHER TIRED WHEN I COMPILED
EUG18. BUT DON'T YOU THINK IT ADDS SOME CHARACTER? WELL I
WILL TRY HARDER.

YOU ARE OF COURSE RIGHT ABOUT THE LIBRARY FUNCTION. THERE IS A
SMALL UPDATE ON ADFS ON THIS DISC.
