Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk --------------------------- May 1992 -------- This is the May '92 issue of Archimedes World. We select only the best software for publication to make sure you have genuinely useful programs. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully. All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1992. They may not be copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. They should NOT be distributed as Public Domain. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original. Archived The '!AWMay92' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWMay92' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying Software When the '!AWMay92' application icon is dragged from the archive window to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software uncompressed from the RAM disk it will need to be set to at least 1700k. If you have 2 Megabytes or more of RAM then you can create an 800K RAM disk and copy the 'May92' archive to there. This greatly speeds up the loading of software from the archive. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by choosing the 'Open viewer' item from the Waiter disk menu. Once the application's directory viewer has opened up you can then drag the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied. They can then be loaded without using the Waiter disk menu or !ArcFS. If you have any difficulties running software from the archive then it is best to copy the programs to another disk and try running them from there. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our built-in text display module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs and read any instructions. Some items on the main menu lead to a sub-menu while others run applications or display text. To select a menu item click the select button once over its icon. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu. The Demos Coin-Age, the authors of Boogie Buggy, present a fully playable demo of their new arcade game entitled Muskrats. You get to play the Stone Age level. This will give you a taste of what the full game is like. Full instructions are provided on screen within the demo. CIS presents a sophisticated and very powerful sound effect generation and editing suite for you to try out. All the save functions are disabled for obvious reasons but everything else works. You can see for yourself if this is the program you have been waiting for. A full operating manual is provided as a text file in the same directory as the applications. The Programs DeskUtils provides you with a menu full of helpful additions to the desktop environment. Whether you are loading programs into the BASIC Editor or setting filetypes DeskUtils will make desktop life easier. Dig Out is an amusing game inspired by the classic Dig Dug arcade game. Not only do you get the full game to play but there is also a friendly editor which allows you to create new game levels. Things are looking grim in Blockland because the Meanies have taken over but with your help they can be banished. You play the part of Opus the penguin who can shove blocks onto the Meanies to kill them. Aligning blocks and eating fruit all add to your final score. Unless you are a mathematical genius you have probably found yourself struggling to work out the VAT on product prices. This used to involve alot of scribbling and head scratching, that is until !VAT arrived. This simple desktop application allows you to enter the current VAT rate and then enter a price. The VAT and total price will then be displayed. You can enter the total price to see what the price excluding VAT is as well. Video tape collections can quickly grow into a disorganised mess. The pain of looking for a precious recording only to find it taped over with a soap opera is almost too much to bear. Video is a handy application which allows you to print clear inlays for your tapes showing what programmes are recorded. Every time you add a recording or tape over a previous one you can simply print a new inlay to reflect the changes. Desktop Projects have provided for your use a small selection of clip art Draw files from their Topic Art collection. As you can see from the examples they are high quality images and present good value for money. See the text file which accompanies the Draw files for details on how to order Topic Art disks. Regular Features In the ArchiMedia section there are details of new products available for the Archimedes. Also there are forms for subscriptions, software submissions and back issue orders which can be loaded into a text editor, filled in and printed out. Viruses We take viruses seriously here at Archimedes World so our cover disks are checked thoroughly to ensure that they are virus free. We can only check for known viruses and there is the small possibility of new, undocumented viruses slipping through our checking procedure. Earn �800 We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. We are interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens, animations, clip art sprite/Draw files, music, sound samples, games, demos and anything else that is interesting and original.
