This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk

This is the September92 issue of Archimedes World. We select only the
best software for publication to make sure you have genuinely useful
programs. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to
use them fully.
All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1992. They may not be copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. They should NOT be distributed as Public Domain. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software.
Keep It Safe
Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original.
Archived
The !AWSept92 application contains all the Archimedes World software,
stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as
possible it is archived using David Pilling's !ArcFS application. The
'!AWSept92' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single
floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly
well from there.
Running
To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory.
Copying Software
When the !AWSept92 application icon is dragged from the archive window
to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software
uncompressed from the RAM disk it will need to be set to at least
1700k. If you have 2Mb or more of RAM then you can create an 800K RAM
disk and copy the !AWSept92 archive to there. This greatly speeds up
the loading of software from the archive. You can copy individual
programs from the cover disk if you choose. Once the application's
directory viewer has opened up you can then drag the contents of the
viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are
copied. They can then be loaded without using the Waiter disk menu or
!ArcFS. If you have any difficulties running software from the archive
then it is best to copy the programs to another disk and try running
them from there.
Documentation
All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our built-in text display module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print.
Using the Menu
The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs and read any instructions. Some items on the main menu lead to a sub-menu while others run applications or display text. To select a menu item click the select button once over its icon. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it.
To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu.

!Draughts
=========
This is an execellent conversion of draughts to the Archimedes, the
game actualy runs in the Risc Os desktop. Also giving options of 2D or
3D playing areas, and a different selection of pieces at the same
time.
!XModes
=======
Ever wanted to create your own modes, well now you can with this
simple utility, it allows you to define resolution as well as colours
whether they be 4,16, or 256 colours. This util allows you to save the
modes as modules as well.
!RoadHog
========
The game of Roadhog is not a game of racing or crashing cars, but a
well thought out game in which you build a road, it is along the lines
of tetris, but remember you will have to build that road correctly,
whether it has curves or crossroads is down to you.
******Warning******
It is advisable to copy this game to a blank disk, and run it from
there, the reason for this is that the high score table writes back to
the disk, and of course the version of ARCFS on the Mag Disk does not
allow writing back to itself.
!DrawFiles
==========
This is a very nice selction of draw files, four in all which cover
the following, Skeleton,Magnyfying Glass,World Globe,Car, these are
ideal for poster or any DTP you may be using...
!Resistor
=========
Ever wondered what a value of a resitor is and what the colour bands
are, then wonder no more as this util will help you when buying
resistors from your local electronic store, or electronic catalogue.
Easy to use and very helpful if doing an electronic project..
The program will run from the menu system, but to get all the features
of this program it is advisable to copy it to a new Disk.
!Currency
=========
This little program will work out the exchange rate from
different countries, for example from pesatas to pounds and vice versa
at the current exchange rate. Very useful for your holiday cash.
Kaleidoscope
============
Here is a treat for all you artists, these files are all from the
program Illusion by Clares, as you will see the colour and reflections
within the screens are very clear indeed, to see them properly it is
advisable to copy the files onto another disk.
!Templates
==========
The above program follows on from last month,and gives a further
explanation into the wimp environment. See articles in the Magazine.
Regular Features
In the Adverts section there are details of new products available
for the Archimedes. Also there are forms for subscriptions, software
submissions and back issue orders which can be loaded into a text
editor, filled in and printed out.
Viruses
We take viruses seriously here at Archimedes World so our cover disks are checked thoroughly to ensure that they are virus free. We can only check for known viruses and there is the small possibility of new, undocumented viruses slipping through our checking procedure.
We want YOUR program
Not only do we want your program but we're also willing to pay for
it. We are interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens,
animations, clip art sprite/Draw files, music, sound samples, games,
demos and anything else that is interesting and original. You
should also note that RISC-OS applications stand the best chance of
publication.
You should always send in your program submissions complete with the
submission form and and SAE. Submission forms can be found on this
disk and inside the magazine (photocopies are accepted).
