L/Crane1

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Dear Gus,
Just received iss 18 and I must say I like the little gremlin
chewing awayat the title page.I've only watched it for about
10 minutes, but when I'vegot more time I look forward to
watching the whole page being gobbledup.Sad I know, but there
it is !!

I thought that your run down on ADFS was very informative, but
thought Icould add to it a little :
*BYE According to my original L-shaped +3 ADFS user guide
(which maydiffer,I don't know) I quote. "Has exactly the same
effect as *CLOSE butis quicker to type"Although I cannot
agree as the abbreviated command isexactly the same length,
*BY. *CL.
*DIR In addition to what you said is also useful for dipping
intodirectories on another drive. E.g. *DIR :1.Games.
*DISMOUNT On my set-up ,particularly when using Sp64,I often
find thatunless a disc is *DISMOUNTed before another disc is
*MOUNTed I keepgetting "Disc changed" messages and thus
find it essential.
*EFORM If ADT seems a bit pricey (`35.25) then ACP (Pres) do
the AP2rom,which replaces the OS rom in the +1 for
`12.92.This has most of thecommon utilities on for loading
SWR etc. However if you already haveSloggers Exp rom 2.0,you
may not wish to lose these facilities.
!BOOT At the risk of sounding thick I never thought of
building a !BOOTfile to set up my View disks.I've now done it
and it saves a lot ofmessing about. Thanks for the tip.
 2ND DRIVE I quite agree,very worthwhile.In fact I have a
5.25 and a3.5.Either being selected by a neat little switch
box on the rear of my +3which Derek Walker built for me.My
5.25 seems to have problems at themoment though, but that's
another story.

As for Mr Boarer's Elk problems,I can't offer any specific
advice but Ican confirm Slogger still do repairs and some
parts can be bought fromBell Computers if a DIY job is
envisaged.Their address is :
                        Bell Computers
                        Po Box 418
                        Leighton Buzzard
                        Beds
                        LU7 7YN
or phone (01908 370405)
However at `17 for a keyboard assembly,`49 for a main computer
board and`69 for a refurbished Elk,it may be better to buy a
2nd hand Elk.

I like the 40 col text facility.Generally speaking I don't
have a lot ofproblems with the 80 col,but I only have a TV
screen and certain parts ofthe screen are better than
others,so the 40 col makes things a lot easier.

Finally a bit of a query.Programs such as the excellent
graphics screensthat have been featured in the past will not
run in 64k mode. The picturesjust disappear.Presumably this is
why it says turn MRB off,on EUG disks.Infact I have noticed
some other bits and pieces I have work fine, exceptwhen they
have sounds on and then the sounds disappear. Is there a way
round this without switching? Some programs on a disk may work
in 64K andsome not and often when switching,ADFS
crashes,needing a full reset.

Anyway that's about it for now.I await the next stunning title
page withbated breath.

THE PROBLEM WITH 64k IS THAT IT IS NON-STANDARD. LEAGALLY
WRITTEN SOFTWARE SHOULD WORK BUT OF COURSE SOMETIMES DOESN'T.
THIS IS WHY I ALWAYS TELL YOU TO TURN IT OFF BEFORE !BOOTING
EUG. PERSONALLY HOWEVER I COULDN'T DO WITHOUT 64k BUT IT NEEDS
TO BE USED AS AN ACCESSORY TO RATHER THAN A PART OF THE ELK.

POINTS ABOUT ADFS TAKEN. I REMEMBER WHEN PRES BROUGHT OUT THEIR
PLUS 2 REPLACEMENT ROM I HAD ALREADY BOUGHT ADT AND ALSO
SLOGGERS PLUS 2 ROM SO I DIDN'T GIVE PRES'S MUCH THOUGHT. I
MUST CONFESS I FORGOT ABOUT IT. I HAVE HAD ANOTHER LOOK AT THE
ARTICLE AND I AGREE IT IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY. FRANKLY
SLOGGERS PLUS 2 ROM DOESN'T REALLY GIVE MANY COMMANDS.
BUFFER IS ONE WHICH MAY BE HANDY BUT ALTERNATIVES MIGHT BE
AVAILABLE. JOYSTICK OF COURSE MIGHT BE HANDY IF YOU HAPPEN TO
HAVE THE INTERFACE.
THE OTHERS ARE ON THE PRES ROM AND MORE BESIDES. ON THE WHOLE
PROBABLY BETTER VALUE THAN ADT.
