Introduction.
This is a package which, using text and graphics, allows you to produce a
Newspaper page, It is a little more complicated than Pagemaker (it's main
rival in this field). It is a disc based program package and does not use
Eproms as Pagemaker does. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage
depending on your set up of equipment. Double disc drives are almost
essential for Fleet St Editor.
What does commend Fleet St Editor is the Manual which is truly excellent -
a treat to use after the mess of the Pagemaker effort. The Package has
something called the 'Guided tour' which allows you to create a finished
page with very little Knowledge. There is nothing better with a complex
set of programs such as these than to feel confident at the start when it
all seems very strange.
As with Pagemaker there are problems loading if Econet is in the machine.
A Master series machine can simply use *UNPLUG 8 a Model B must have the
Econet dissabled either by a software command or by removing the chip.
Two Disc's are supplied. (You have a choice of 40 or 80 Track when you
purchase the package). Disc 1 is the Main System Disc Disc 2 is the
Graphics Library.
Fleet St Editor has a different style to Pagemaker and you are supplied
with a Library of Pre-drawn pictures which are very useful.
The Program:
The system disc must be 'booted' to start. When this is done you are
confronted with a main menu. This has a large heading above six extra
large Icons. these are, going around clockwise:-
1. Graphics Library:- On selecting this Icon you are shown a screen from
which you can select any graphic from the large Library of pre-drawn art.
The screen consists of a large working area with icons on the right. At
the bottom of the screen is a message window where your page selection
takes place and any error messages appear. The Graphics are on the Library
disc and are numbered from 00 to 42. These contain varied art ranging from
Star Sign's, Maps, Butterflys, a dripping tap, and many others.
You can choose a page by using the cursor control keys to select the
number then press return. The complete contents are then shown on screen.
The Icons shown at the side of the screen allow you to save and load to
disc; Cut and Paste; carry on with another graphics page; or go back to
the main menu.
You use the graphics library by selecting a complete page of pictures,
cutting out the bits you need later on by surrounding it with a box,
positioning it on screen where you want and then saving it to disc ready
for the next stage in the process - the Studio.
2. The Studio: Selected from the main menu by highlighting the icon with
a press of the space bar and confirming with the return key.
You then have in front of you a screen with a familiar large working
space, but with many more icons on the right hand side and at the bottom
of the window also - over 30 icons in total.
This is not as bad as it seems as they are all easy to use and well
documented in the excellent manual. You only need at the most four icons
to start with.
Icons include Load and Save to disc; Stretch; Clear Panel; Reduce; Clear
Panel; Fill; Exit; Pen selection; and something called rubber banding, but
mainly in this area you can do all your drawing and artwork. By loading in
the graphic you saved in the Graphics Library, this area will allow you to
add to it, draw around it, stretch it, rotate it etc.
You will then have to save your finished masterpiece to disc and move onto
the next area - the Copydesk.
3. The Copydesk: This is where you can add Text and headlines to your
graphics with the built in word processor. Four fonts are available for
you to use straight away - two for headlines and two for text.
Headlines are added either by creating them from letters out of the
Graphics library or having Double height Text and using the fonts
provided. These can be changed to any of the others included on the system
disc (there are at least six to choose from).
To make a Headline you position the cursor on the second line of the page
and press Red function key F6. This will then move any graphics out of the
way leaving the top two lines free for the headline, this does not mean
however that the Headline has to be at the top of your page. If you use F6
on any even line the two lines will be reserved for another headline.
Shifted F1 will allow you to save your item and Shift F9 will return you
to the main menu ready for the next area The Page Make-up.
4. Page Make-Up: Once you have completed a few of these items and have
them saved on a disc it will be time to think about creating a complete
page. Select the 'page make-up' icon from the main menu. This takes you to
a screen which is totally different to any that you have come across
previously. This is to allow a representation of a full A4 page to appear.
The left hand window is your display area where the make-up of the page
will be shown. There are two windows to the right - the lower showing the
two types of layout you can have; the top one shows the contents of your
disc with the names you have called your files.
You select the page design you require. Then you are asked which panel you
require. If you have made a banner headline for the top of your page then
this is the one to choose. Once you have chosen, you are asked if you want
an expanded box. This option will stretch your panel over the width of the
page when it would only be normally half width.
This process continues until you have completed the whole page. You must
then save it to disc with a name you can distinguish later as a page and
not a panel.
From there exit the program to the main menu for the next Icon.
The Printer:
5. Printing: This screen is similar to the last one but only the names of
Pages on your disc are displayed in the top right hand box. You can either
print out directly or select a preview option which will give you a rough
idea of what the finished page will look like.
Once you are happy you can print out. The program gives you a prompt to
make sure your printer is ready. If everything is OK then you can print it
out. It will take on average about 3 minutes and is of a good standard.
6. Disc Options: This Icon is for setting the system up to your equipment
and is very straight forward.
Having covered the actual set up of the program, it only leaves the
running of the program. The idea is for you as a user to create panels
which when put together create a complete front page. You must go through
all the sections to start with to get the idea.
This is where Mirrorsoft have come up with a great idea which Pagemaker
could take up. They have designed what they call the 'Guided Tour'. It is
in fact a completed front page with only one section removed. This is the
one you must create.
You transfer the relevent files to your working disc and then work through
the first few chapters of the manual, creating a panel. When you get to
the printer section you will find that you have a complete page. This is a
very good way of getting a novice to work it.
View and wordwise files can be loaded in straight from disc - all you have
to do is set up the font. It should be possible to load in digitised
pictures but at the moment I have been unable to do this.
This package is well worth it's price. The manual is excellent and easy to
get into even for a beginner. The Guided tour is easy enough for anyone to
master. With the promise of further add on packages including Walt Disney
characters this is excellent value for money.

AN EXTRA UTILITY FOR FLEET STREET EDITOR
The Disc containing this program comes in a nice red folder with
information provided on punched pages, ready to fit into the Fleet St
Editor folder. There is also room to transfer the disc to the folder.
You can purchase a 40 or 80 track copy depending on the system you have.
There are four extra utilities on the disc and they are loaded in the same
manner as the Fleet St Editor programs, having a main menu and selecting
an icon by using the space bar and return key.
The utilities are :-
1.Mode converter
2.Panel Previewer
3.Poster printer
4.Disc Index Database.
The Mode converter (1) and the Database (4) can be used as stand alone
programs as they do not need Fleet St Editor to allow them to work.
1. Mode Converter:- This allows you to convert any graphics page in Modes
0, 1, 2, 5 or 7 for use in Mode 4 (the same mode as used by Fleet St
Editor). You still have to use the Admin department of the Editor as it is
a non Fleet St file.
To use this, you should load in the converter icon and set up your drive
and directory when prompted. The catalogue of your disc containing the
screen to be converted is then shown. Select your screen image, stating
which mode it is in. The screen is then converted and re-saved to disc
after you enter a filename for it.
2. Display Panel:- This display option allows you to go through a disc of
panels and put each onto the screen. This can be very useful if you are
reviewing a disc you made some time ago.
3. Poster Maker:- For me this is the best program on the disc. You can
take a panel and print it out in many sizes from 1 x 1 to 2 x 4. Very
useful for display work.
It makes use of the printer driver from your system disc so if you want to
print out without the system disc you must transfer the relevent printer
programs to your panel disc.
Sizes available are:-
1 x 1 size: Is the actual size 1/8 of an A4 sheet.
2 x 2 size: A5 landscape 1/2 an A4 sheet.
3 x 3 size: A4 landscape printed at 90 degrees.
2 x 4 size: A4 portrait vertically.
4. Disc Index:- With this utility you can set up your own database plus
index for all the files on any of your discs. You can also add descriptors
to your files. An index is written to each disc and a full index will go
to your database disc.
The program is menu driven and the manual takes you through it step by
step. Once you have indexed each disc your database can be seached for a
file. It will tell you which disc your file is on. Very useful if you have
lots of discs.
This suite of programs bridge some of the gaps between Pagemaker and Fleet
St Editor that were evident when I reviewed them. Previewer is very good
but the star is the poster printer option which would be worth the
purchase price alone. The database is useful but you really have to have
an urgent need for a program like this.
A very useful addition to your programs if you already have Fleet St
Editor, and worth the money for the poster option alone.

AN EXTRA PACKAGE FOR USE WITH FLEET ST EDITOR
This disc contains another Graphics Library which you use by simply
replacing for the original disc containing the Graphics. Included are
pictures of Snow White; some of the 7 dwarfs; Bambi; Prince Charming; and
many more over 20 screens.
The most irritating thing was the copywrite logo on each page, which
intrudes into the main area of the picture.
A lovely addition which will keep children happy for hours and could be
used to create cartoons or even a comic.
