Programs/Frntr2000/!README1st

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Frontier 2000 sampler
---------------------
Welcome to Frontier 2000 from Cambridgeshire Software House.
Produced in conjunction with Carlisle City Council.
Frontier 2000 is a simulation package based on an area around Carlisle. The
contents have been chosen carefully so that the package appeals to everybody irrespective of where they live.

Quick instructions
--------------------
1. Make sure that you have a font cache set. This is very important as
the program will work very slowly without it. To do this: middle button
over the Archimedes or Acorn symbol on the bottom right corner of your screen. Select the 'Task display' option with the left hand button to
open a new window. Scroll down this window until you see the words
'font cache' on the left-hand side. There should be a number to the right of the words. Right again will show a small bar (or nothing if
the number is 0K). Make sure that this is set to at least 32K or 64K by clicking about 1cm to the right of the number.
2. Select a reasonable screen mode. A300/A400/A3000 users may prefer
mode 15. A5000 users may like mode 28. A540's mode 21 or 15. A lot of the
pictures in the software use 16 shades of grey and DO benefit from 256
colour modes. To select a mode, or to see what is currently chosen:
middle button over the coloured checkerboard on the bottom-right-hand
side of the screen. Move the mouse over the word 'Mode' on the menu.
Slide the mouse right over the arrow '' to gain a new menu. Select from this a new mode, if necessary.
3. Run the program in the usual way by double-clicking on !Fonts and double clicking on the '!Frontier' icon on your disc.
4. Only one trail is provided on this disc. You may ONLY choose to turn the car scene on or off.
5. Click on 'OK' on the options page to continue through the trail.
6. If you can't remember the clue for where to go, click on the 'paper' icon
on the tool window. (Left hand side).
7. To move the car to a place: Click on the car key. (On the tool window
attached to the map). Click on the green hotspot on the map to which you
wish to go. A car scene may appear to give an indication of the time
required to get there. A small black car will appear next to the hotspot you chose. If you are unable to work out from the clue where you are
supposed to be going, there is a list at the end of this file.
8. An envelope will appear on the tool window if you have arrived at the
correct place. Try another place if you do not get the envelope.
9. Click on the envelope to find out the question.
10. Use the specialists who have now appeared on the tool window (far left)
to find the answer to the question.
11. Ring the Professor from your car phone (of course), by clicking on the
phone icon. Most 3 digit numbers will work and you must click on SND to send the message.
12. Select A, B, C or D from the possible answers.
13. Repeat from (6) to (12) until you reach the end of the trail.
14. A certificate appears which tells you how long you took to complete the
trail. On the demo disc the software can only be shut down fron the main map page.
15. There are a number of maps available, these can be accessed by driving
to:
Carlisle, Carlisle Castle and Carlisle Cathedral.
