This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

!TextCheck is an application to help anyone who writes articles, essays or even just an occasional note. It has the ability to check Text, 1stWord+ and PipeDream files for spacing errors and wrong uses of capital letters etc.. To load it double-click on the icon and after a brief intro window, it will load up onto the icon bar in the usual fashion.
Click on the icon with select to bring up the Options window. Most things are self explanitory and from here you can set the options - whether you want letter cases to be analysed and how many spaces or lines you want between paragraphs, words commas and full-stops. You can also default the options, load them or save them to disk. If you are unsure about these options you can leave them because for most files they are quite satisfactory.
Clicking with menu on the iconbar icon will bring up a menu. This contains the following items:
Info - leads to a submenu where you can either get information on the program or a processed file. The window for information on a processed file shows the length, filetype and name of the file, together with whether the letter cases were checked and how big the dictionary is.
Options - this opens the Options window (see above).
Add word - this leads to a window where you can add words to the program's dictionary. A dictionary is needed to give appropriate words capital letters if the option is chosen from the options window. Enter the word into the writable icon and then either click on 'Use', where the program will just use the word while !Textcheck is loaded, or 'Save', where the word will be saved onto disk so it will be used forever more. Obviously !TextCheck will have to be decompressed from the archive for this option to work. Alternatively, to enter new words you can load up the file !TextCheck.Capitals into !Edit and enter the words in there, making sure that capital letters are used and words are placed in alphabetical order.
Preview Text - this option is only available if a file has been processed and the save window is open. It gives a ROUGH idea of how the file will look before you save it. If the file is of type 1stWord+ or PipeDream the file may not be shown entirely properly, do not take the writing shown as 100% true.
Multitask - This gives the option of whether you want files to be processed while multitasking or not. If a file is dragged to the icon and this option is on, the Progress window will open. This shows how far the program has got through the file and how far there is to go (in percentages). You can continue to use the desktop as normal and the processing is done in the background. If the option is not set, the desktop will be paused while the file is processed. This is faster than if it were multitasking, but you cannot do anything at the same time. An hourglass with the percentage of file processed will appear while it is processing.
Quit - This quits the application and asks for confirmation if there is unsaved data.
If you click with menu on the Options window a menu is opened. This menu is identical to the iconbar menu except that the 'Options' entry leads to to a submenu from where you can load, save or default the options.
If you click with menu on the Progress window while it is processing, there is the usual 'Info' and 'Quit' options, but also 'Abort'. This simply asks you for confirmation then terminates the processing.
If you click with menu on the Preview Text window another short menu appears. Again, there is the usual 'Info' and 'Quit' options, but also 'Reprocess'. This quite obviously reprocesses the original file, incase you do not like the results in the Preview Text window and have changed some options.
The program simply looks through any Text, 1stWord+ or PipeDream file that you drag to the icon or options window and adds spaces/newlines/capitals etc to make the file more presentable. !TextCheck may also look through to find any words that should have capital letters, from its dictionary (see above). The routines used are fine for most files, but obviously cannot be perfect for EVERY file, therefore it is always best to briefly check over the new processed file.
When the program has finished processing, a save window is displayed. From there you can drag the file to a filer window. While the save window is present you can get info on the file via Info>File on the menu. If you try to save over your original file it will ask for confirmation. I would not recommend saving the new file on to the old one, always check the new file first, before deleting the old one. I cannot be held responsible for any loss of work.
