This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

What is Miasma?

Miasma is a specially designed backdrop program designed to change your
backdrop each time you use your computer. Its really a very simple program,
but its essential to stop your backdrop getting samey.
This release of Miasma comes complete with a rather stylish set of graphics specially adapted from our Freestyle demo. The graphics have been down graded to use only 256 colours, and given the subtle shading on them this tends make them look a bit grainy and dithered. If you've got a RiscPC, we'd therefore recommend that you check out our Kulture web site which has a version of Miasma with 32k colours pics in it. How do I use Miasma?

All you have to do is copy sprite files of the pictures you want to display on your desktop backdrop, into the Pics directory (click on !Help from the filer menu, or double click on !Miasma with shift held down, then click on Pics, to open the Pics directory).
Miasma already contains some example gfx, but they're small to save space, so I reccomend you use some of your own. 'The Vision' pic is quite nice tho.
Each time you Miasma, one of these pictures will be selected at random and placed on your backdrop. Its logical to add a line that runs Miasma, to your boot up sequence. This will then run Miasma every time you turn your computer on. See 'Boot up sequences' below, for info on how to do this.

The Risc OS backdrop allows pictures to be placed onto the backdrop in special ways. Pictures can be placed normally in the centre of the screen, can ba scaled to fill the whole screen, or can be tiled repeatedly to fill the screen (useful for textures).
Miasma supports these features by checking the filenames of the sprite files you place in the Pics directory. Sprite files whose name begins with 'c' will be centered on your backdrop, those that begin with 's' will be scaled and those that start with 't' will be tiled. If the first letter of the filename does not match either s,c or t, Miasma will assume that the picture should be placed centrally on the screen (as if it began with a c).
Boot Up Sequences

For RiscPC machines :
Copy the Miasma program into the Tasks directory inside your !Boot directory. It should be located at :
ADFS::Harddisc4.$.!Boot.Choices.Boot.Tasks
(The name of your Hard disk may not be Harddisc4).
For pre-RiscPC machines :
Copy Miasma to your hard disk, and insert a line in your !Boot file that runs !Miasma.
eg, if your hard disk is called Harddisc4 and Miasma was located in a 'Utils' directory, insert a line like this:
!Harddisc4.$.Utils.!Miasma
This will run the Miasma program every time you turn on your computer, thereby giving you a fresh backdrop picture.

This program is Kulture Webware� which basically means the program cannot be copied or distributed, except by downloading it from the Kulture web site or by downloading it from the Digital Databank BBS. It may NOT be distributed by PD libraries or any other sites on the net.
