� �DTS Fonts�

David to date we have paid DTS �25,000 when they were part of the
ABL Group, as you know they have since gone into liquidation and
DTS has changed owners.

My view in all this is that this should be the payment for the
Bitmaps that we recieved in 1987 and used in Arthur 1.2, and that
due to the change in circustances with DTS we will/may not need
to pay any royalties (this I feel is where Lorne should get
involved). Hence this would be the end to the old contract with
the previous DTS owners.
If we assume the above to be so, we have also had delivered by
the new DTS 12 outlines in both Adobe and Metafont format, and
that these are subject to the pricing structure supplied by
Robert Norton on 24th June 1988.
My understanding about the outline fonts we have is:

i. The outlines in Metafont format use splines and Acorn
do �not� now want to use these. Also what was supplied
certain characters did not conform to Adobe Metrics,
and we could not have used them.
ii. The outlines in Adobe use Beziers which is the way
Acorn currently want to proceed. But what has been
supplied is not very efficient in Acorn's eyes i.e. DTS
have use far too many Beziers for each outlines plus
William is not convinced that some characters in the
outlines supplied conform to Adobe Metrics format.

Metafont Payment�
We need to pay DTS for the Metafont outlines, since we are not
going to use these we need (I think) only to pay the fixed part
and since DTS are already aware that we are not going to use
these they are prepared to take less payment and that Acorn
should make them an offer.
Price per Outline � 1650

Since these would have been of little use to us and we can assure
DTS we are not going to use these (even return them) we should
offer only a nominal amount for these i.e. �2000 - �3000.
�Adobe Payment�
The true price for these is as above �19800, but again they are
not exactly what we want and we still need changes to certain
characters but as with the Metafont we understood what the fixed
cost were when we took the outlines so we are obliged to pay the
full amount. But again DTS are sympathetic to our needs and may
accept less payment. I feel we should offer �7-8000 or possible
more if we are going to continue to use these outlines, Acorn
would also then need to negotiate a royalty payment with DTS -
which leads to the following :
What do we really want from DTS?.
i. The current Adobe formats but with the corrected
characters - which leaves us with a lot of work to optimise
the beziers and add 'Hints'.
ii. Arrange for DTS to optimise the bezier format, and if
they could add 'Hints". Both of which would be expensive in
both time and money assuming DTS were prepared to carry out
this work - Acorn may need to supply the tools for DTS to do
this work, these tools as yet are not available.
iii. Do we need Adobe Metrics? I have had different views on
why we want these. As I understand it our Font editor
needs to generates these from the Outlines and that we only
need them to verify the Outlines. I also understand that
these are public domain and that we already have them!

In summary David I am undecided as to what is the best course of
action other than we should offer some payment in the near future
to DTS for what they have delivered. How about �10000 for
starters?, but I am reluctant to do anything until it is quite
clear exactly what we want. When I asked Mike Challis/William
Stoye they could not answer this question with any conviction.
Until I know what is required it is not possible to get a
contract prepared.
Some other personal comments I get the feeling that the
development team are striving for perfection, and may be spending
more time on producing the excellent Font Editor and Manager and
not on the fact that we need these fonts urgently, and that if
they are as good as the Apple then that is good enough - they do
not initially have to be better.
