This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

ArcFS Filer

The following applies to ArcFS Filer v0.50/v2.00 or later:
When the !ArcFS or !ArcFSr/w applications are double clicked on (or ArcFS is
automatically loaded by a double click on an archive after ArcFS has been
seen), an icon will appear on the left hand side of the icon bar. This is
the ArcFS Filer icon.
If you click select or adjust on the icon a preferences window will appear:
The top section is concerned with encrypting files with a password. To set a password you should do the following:
Enter the password in the box. If you have a read / write version you
should enter the same password in both boxes. This is to prevent
accidental mis-typing of the password, and the resulting file encryption
with a password that you don't know!
Click on the garble 'radio' button.
If you mis-type one of the passwords (read/write version) an error box
will appear. Click on O.K. in this error box. The passwords will be
cleared and the caret will be repositioned in the top box ready for you
to type the passwords again.
To remove the password you simply click on the none 'radio' button.
The next section (read/write version only) is for selecting the type of
compression to be used. See the comp/mem documentation file for details.
The last section is for miscellaneous options. These are:
Display hourglass - display the hourglass during operations if selected.
*Remember password - if selected, the password(s) will not be cleared
from the boxes when a password is set. This allows
you to switch between a commonly used password and
no encryption.

*Open new archives - if selected, newly created archives are automatically
opened and the root directory displayed.
Auto Compact - auto compact archives following a write operation.
*Remember pathname - keeps the pathname of the last created archive in the
'Save as' dialogue box. This allows easy creation of a
number of archives in the same directory by ammending
the leafname for each and clicking on OK.
The read / write version also provides a facility to save preferences so
that your prefered options are selected when you start up ArcFS. Simply
click on the Save option in the bottom right hand corner of the preferences
window.
N.B. The stared options are only effective when using ArcFS Filer on the
desktop. The other options are effective outside the desktop, and can be set
from the command line. If you change the options from the command line, they
will not be reflected in the preferences window until you click on the ArcFS
Filer icon.
The menu, which can be obtained by clicking the middle mouse button over the
ArcFS Filer icon or in the preferences window, provides the following:
Info - Move the pointer over the arrow for a info box.
+New archive - Provides a 'save as' dialogue box for creating new archives.
+Compact - Manually compact an open archive chosen from the sub-menu.
Open parent - Displays the parent directory of the chosen archive.
Open '$' - Displays the top level directory of the chosen archive.
Close arc. - Closes the chosen archive.
Quit - Quit ArcFS Filer and kill ArcFS & ArcFSFiler modules.
Options marked + are only available with the read / write version.
Compact, Open parent, Open '$' and Close arc. options are greyed out if no
