The kingfisher is 16 cm. to 17 cm. in length and can be found on river banks, streams and lakes. The kingfisher has a low, rapid flight and its bright colours warn predators it is not good to eat. It builds a nest tunnel in sand or earth banks where it lays five to seven round, white eggs between March and August. The kingfisher feeds on insects, tadpoles and fish which it swallows head first to avoid choking on the scales.
