Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

===> What is NewerLook?
You probably don't really need to read this file. All you need to know is
that you can run it, and your desktop will look better. Getting your boot
sequence to run the !NewerLook.!PreRun file before the desktop starts up
makes it even better, if you know how (I have neither the space nor the
ability to describe how to set up a boot sequence). NewerLook is really a
collection of bits and bobs, separately described below, in one application
for convenience.
Running NewerLook from floppy disc is not recommended. The Pinboard will
want to re-get its backdrop when you change mode, the Resource Filer will
want to access the new Apps directory when you click Select on it, and the
Filer will also want some windows occasionally. The application will also
fail to run under RISC OS 2 and 3.0. There are bits in NewerLook that are of
interest to floppy users and RISC OS 2 and 3.0 users, but it is up to you
to extract them and put them in a boot sequence of your own.
This application should have been distributed with a directory called
'NewerBits'. See the NewerBits.!!InHere file for info.
===> The parts that make up NewerLook
� A collection of new WIMP sprites. Unlike NewLook, NewerLook has a set of
3D file icons to go with the rest of the desktop, along with all the other
new icons. Many are 3D and coloured, using dithering, which stops the
recent 'greyification' of the desktop. There are two sets of sprites: one
for 16-colour TV-resolution modes (like 12) and one for 16-colour high-
resolution modes (like 20). The correct one for the current mode is
selected when run. Some sprites (for example tile_1) in the Sprites files
may not be familiar to you. You may think they never appear. If this is
the case, you can remove them. If you do know what they're for, I'm sure
you'll enjoy them. In fact, you can remove any sprites you don't use to
save memory, if that's a problem - but please distribute only original
copies.
� Some window tools, quite similar to NewLook's, but with numerous subtle
changes, the most noticable being centred scroll bars, two-box toggle size
icons (like the original design, rather than the less clear
big-box/small-box arrangement borrowed from Windows), a popping-in
arrangement more similar to that of the rest of the desktop, and a
slightly deeper title bar - see the note about icon size.
� A backdrop, in low and high resolution. NewLook has many backdrops, but
unfortunately they're all for 16-colour high-resolution modes, and don't
look very good when scaled down. If you prefer any of NewLook's other
textures, or any other sprite you can find, you can put it in the 12 or
20 directory to use it - but for TV-resolution modes you should scale it
down using ChangeFSI, as it won't look very good otherwise. The NewerBits
directory contains a few textures taken from NewLook and mucked around
with using ChangeFSI, which you might prefer to the default.
� AddSprites, a utility to stop badly-behaved applications replacing icons
in the WIMP pool. It's very annoying to design a nice 3D high-resolution
draw file icon, and then have it replaced by an old 2D TV-resolution one.
Also, AddSprites can deal with small icons nicely. Read the separate !Help
file in the NewerBits directory if you want to know more.
� The popping-in of icons on the desktop is finally standardised! Previously
action icons popped in to mid-grey, arrow icons popped in to yellow,
option and radio icons popped in without changing colour, window tools
went down and right and partly went yellow, and tools in Draw and Paint
went right and changed colour to mid-grey. Now everything pops in to a
slightly darker shade than when not popped in.
� New DragASprite module provides semi-transparent sprite drags (much better
than the modules some magazines and other sources (!) have done). The
semi-transparent bits use an alternating dither pattern to avoid losing
detail, essential with NewerLook's dithered sprites. It is possible to
change the type of sprite drag used to your own taste using the *DragType
command. Another setup you might like is a solid sprite with a
semi-transparent shadow:

� There are replacement windows for RISC OS's ROM apps. These are usually
more compact and better laid out, compared to NewLook's windows which
take up far more space than they need to, a problem for people with
standard monitors. Writable icons now have 3D borders too, which they
really should have had in a supposedly 3D style. Some icons are not ideal,
but it's not possible to improve the windows further without re-writing
the applications. All the icons used are the right size for the system
font in TV-res and VGA-res modes. In a note to developers, Acorn specified
strange icon heights as the standard, and though no icon heights have
appeared in the new Style Guide, the NewLook ROM apps use them - they make
the system font look completely wonky in 3D borders, when in a TV-res
mode, although you wouldn't notice it in a VGA-res mode (like everyone at
Acorn uses... they don't seem to care about us TV-res owners any more
:-( ).
� There are new tool icons for Paint and Draw. Instead of just being TV-res
icons exactly like the old ones but with 3D borders, the tool icons have
been redrawn, in TV-resolution and high-resolution modes. My favourite
icon of the month: Paint's high-res flood fill tool.
� The replacement windows and other resources are loaded from the NewerLook
application rather than being all loaded into RAM, which wastes a lot of
memory. For this reason, there is a new Resource Filer, which access
the ROM applications with their new resources from the hard drive.
Clicking Select on the icon bar icon opens the hard drive Apps directory,
and Adjust opens the real ResourceFS if you really want it. Holding Shift
with either of these opens the parent of the Apps directory (like the
'Open $' item on the old menu). Resources on hard drive also has the
advantage that you can put all your most-used applications on it, not
just the ROM ones, some of which may seldom be used. When NewerLook is
run, all applications in the Apps directory will be booted, in the same
way that the desktop boots all applications in the ResourceFS when it
starts up. The Resource Filer also has a larger menu.
� There's a replacement hourglass for TV-resolution and high-resolution
modes. It's a watch with a rotating hand - if Hourglass_Percentage is used
then the hand will make one revolution in 100% (and highlight the 'done'
bit, like the CountDown clock). LEDs and Hourglass_Colours are supported.
The hourglass code was written by Jon Ribbens - get the HourMake
application to design your own hourglasses. However, the version NewerLook
uses has been altered from the original code: the percentage animation now
replaces the normal animation rather than appearing alongside it; the LEDs
appear in the right place for the animation; Hourglass_Colours is
supported (the hourglass with always keep its black outline, and changes
the anti-alias colour automatically; also returned parameters are right);
Hourglass_Percentage now conforms entirely to the RISC OS 3 specification,
it doesn't allow lower order Hourglass_Ons to affect the percentage, and
removes percentages on high order Hourglass_Offs; *Mode command removed;
*Hourglass command renamed to *Glass to avoid clashing with ArcFS's
*HourGlass command.
That is all. Hope you like it. Feel free to muck about with it to tailor
it to your own preferences, but please only distribute the original. This
is a PD program.

by very foul means, and grouping borders changed to nicer ones, again
by very foul means. NewerBits includes new Impression Style bits
rather than Impression 2. Hot-spots added to pointer-changing icons.
