This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

PROBLEMS WITH THE ROMBOX+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I seem to be another one having the problems with the Rombox+ which Roy Warner described in EUG20. I have had my Rombox 3 yeara now and have had little trouble until recently. At first it was only an occasional crash but has now become much more frequent and so makes it almost unusable, I have tried cleaning the edge connector as he suggested on both my Elks but it has only improved slightly and I cannot use the Rombox reliably. I have also got an ACP AP1 which I am now using as this works reliably without any trouble. So why is the Rombox so sensitive to dirty contacts - if this is the cause of the trouble?? If anyone has any further suggestions for me to try, I would be most grateful as I want to get back to using the Rombox since I miss the SW RAM and facilities it provides. Tel.0181 302 2395 ************************************************************************** HOPEFULLY SOMEONE WILL COME UP WITH SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR YOU RICHARD. HOWEVER I ONCE HAD TO REPAIR ONE OF THESE SOME TIME AGO. AS I REMEMBER IT WAS ONE WITH I THINK EIGHT OR SIX ROM SOCKETS. I OPENED IT UP, IT WAS GLUED TOGETHER AND DISCOVERED THAT THERE WERE TWO BOARDS CONNECTED TOGETHER BY RIBBON CABLE. NOW RIBBON CABLE ISN'T DESIGNED TO BE SOLDERED AND THE WEIGHT OF THE CABLE MOVING AROUND INSIDE HAD BROKEN SOME OF THE STRANDS IN THE CORES. IN SOME CASES THERE WERE STILL SOME STRANDS CONNECTED SO THAT THE BROKEN STRANDS WERE SHORTING TO ADJACENT STRANDS IN OTHER CASES THE CORES HAD BROKEN ALTOGETHER. I DREW OUT THE PRINCIPAL AREAS OF THE TWO CIRCUIT BOARDS, JUST CLEAR ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO SEE WHAT I WAS DOING AND PUT A LETTER AT EACH POINT WHERE A CORE WAS SOLDERED OR WHERE ONE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SOLDERED AS INDICATED BY REMANANTS OF STRANDS. THEN I DREW UP A TABLE LISTING ALL THE CONNECTIONS, A TO G, B TO D AND SO ON. I THEN DE-SOLDERED ALL THE RIBBON CABLE AND REPLACED IT WITH SOME COLOURED HOOK-UP WIRE FROM MAPLIN. I MADE EACH PIECE A GENEROUS LENGTH SO THAT WHEN I PUT THE BOX BACK TOGETHER IT WOULD CRAM SOMEWHAT AND REDUCE THE RISK OF MOVING. I ALSO STRIPED AND TINNED EACH END BEFORE SOLDERING. I SHOULD AT THIS POINT EMPHASISE THE IMPORTANCE OF RECORDING THE POSITIONS OF EACH JOINT AND THEN COUNTING THEM BEFORE STARTING. I ONCE WAS GIVEN AN OSCILLOSCOPE TO REPAIR. IT WAS A SIMPLE JOB OF REPLACING A WORN COMPONENT BUT THE COMPONENT WAS ON A BOARD WHICH WAS DIFFICULT TO GET AT. THERE WERE THREE BOARDS AND THE TUBE BASE. I DREW THE CONNECTIONS THEN DESOLDEED. WHEN I CAME TO REASSEMBLE I FOUND I HAD AN EXTRA WIRE. I NEVED DID FIGURE OUT WHERE THAT WIRE WENT AND THE OSCILLOSCOPE IS STILL IN MY ATTIC. I KNOW THIS SOUNDS COMPLICATED AND LABOUROUS. TAKE YOUR TIME. SPEND SEVERAL DAYS AT IT ESPECIALLY THE DIAGRAMS. AS MY WIFE SAYS WHEN SHE IS COOKING IT'S ALL IN THE PREPARATION.
