!Sibelius7/!Help/Specialnot

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

INTRODUCTION

The keys Shift- and Ctrl-F11/F12 give the
selected note or chord four special noteheads.
  The keys are toggles.

When you copy notes special noteheads are
copied too, so when transcribing a passage of
(say) cue-notes, you only need to press Shift-
  F12 for the first one.

CROSS NOTEHEAD (Ctrl-F11)

This indicates a note of uncertain pitch,
sometimes used for untuned percussion instru-
ments. When pressed on a chord, Ctrl-F11 makes
all the noteheads in the chord into crosses.

If you don't want all of a chord's noteheads
to become crosses, you can use the cross
notehead on the Transfers window. Alternative-
ly, you can split the chord between two
  voices.

CUE-NOTE (Shift-F12)

A cue-note is a small note, typically used in
cues in instrumental parts or for editorial
  additions. Unlike grace-notes, cue-notes take
up rhythmic space in a bar.

When pressed on a chord, Shift-F12 makes all
the noteheads in the chord become small. As
for cross noteheads, you can use a transfer if
you want just some of a chord's noteheads to
become cue-notes. Alternatively, you can split
  the chord between two voices.

DIAMOND NOTEHEAD (Shift-F11)

This indicates a note which is fingered but
not played. It is usually used on stringed
instruments to notate a harmonic, but is also
used (e.g. by Schoenberg) to indicate piano
keys depressed silently. On a chord, you can
make all noteheads or just the top notehead
into a diamond, depending on whether you
select just the top notehead or the whole
  chord.

HEADLESS NOTE (Ctrl-F12)

This is sometimes used, like the cross note-
head, to mean a note of indefinite pitch.
Stravinsky and Lutoslawski also use it to
indicate a repetition of the preceding note or
  chord.

Headless notes are selected and dragged by
clicking where the notehead should be (i.e. to
  one side of the stem).
