I have been asked to write about my Cumana Disc Drive. I cant
remember when I got it, in the late 80's I think, my son who now lives in
Sheffield, but did live in Hatfield near London, went to a Computer show
and bought it there. It has a cartridge which slots into my Plus 1,
usually the back slot so I can use VIEW in the front slot.It has a T2CU
chip which is fitted in the cartridge so I can transfer from tape (this
came from Slogger, again bought at the show). The T2CU doesnt load all the
game sometimes you have to have some on disc and the rest on tape, not
enough room, but its still faster than just tape. Some games are very long
and have alot of programs.

There is another place on the ribbon for another disc drive, it
looks like 32 OR 36 pins. It is Drive 0 and I have never tried to make it
go into another drive as I thought 0 was the only one it had. I have had
quite alot of used floppy discs given me, I believe they were got at a car
boot some wont format, but only a few.

There were two books with it, one for the BBC, also a Utility Disc,
which has many programs, FORMAT, VERIFY, COPY, BACK UP, SET TIME, ACORN
DFS TO CUMANA DFS or vice versa, DISC EDITOR and CHANGE DRIVE OPTIONS.
I only wish it would do double sided as most of the discs I use are
double sided disc. I would be able to get alot more on. A disc has 9
sectors and 512 bytes per track, and it is Double Density, 40 Track.
When I first received the Magazine I couldnt read the disc and had
to use the conversion program on the Utilities disc, so it transferred the
data from Acorn DFS to Cumana FDS, this was on Issues 12 & 13, but now I
am having troubles with 14 so I expect Gus is getting fed up with me as 15
will be out soon. But we will get it sorted I hope.

I had thought of getting another drive maybe a 3.5 disc. But I am
not able to afford it right now.

I  SEEM  TO  REMEMBER READING A REVIEW IN EU SOME YEARS AGO ABOUT CUMANA. 
THEY  WERE IMPRESSED WITH IT. LIKE SO MANY IDEAS WHICH WERE DEVELOPED FOR 
THE   ELK   THE  VOICE BOX, FIRST BYTES JOYSTICK INTERFACE NOT TO MENTION 
COMPANIES  WHOSE SOFTWARE CLASHED WITH THE PLUS ONE IT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN 
KNOBBLED BY ACORN. A COMPANY WITH A DEATH WISH IF EVER I SAW ONE AND FROM 
RECENT  SALES  FIGURES  THEY  MIGHT  GET  THEIR  WISH  YET AS THE CLUMSEY 
PROGRESS  OF  THE  UBIQUITOUS  IBM  PC  LUMBERS  ON TO EVER MORE POWERFUL 
POINTLESSNESS AND SPEED OR LACK OF IT.

WE  HERE  AT  THE  OFFICES  OF  EUG  HAVE BEEN PRESSING OUR LITTLE BRAINS 
RELENTLESSLY   ON  THE  PROBLEM OF DESIGNING A DISK FORMAT FOR OUR CUMANA 
OWNING  BRETHREN AS YET WITH NO SUCCESS. OUR SHELIA HAS HAD TO ACCEPT EUG 
ON  TAPE WHICH WHILE BEING OF THE FINEST QUALITY INCORPORATING AS IT DOES 
THE RICHARD DIMOND MENU SYSTEM SOMEHOW LACKS THE SNAP OF DISK. CAN ANYONE 
OUT  THERE  HELP? WHAT HAVE WE BEEN DOING WRONG? SHELIA SIMPLY CANNOT GET 
HER  DFS  EUG  DISKS  TO TRANSFER TO CUMANA. BY THE WAY THE DFS WE USE IS 
SLOGGERS PEGASUS, NOT ACORN.
