!Sibelius7/!Help/Stavesyste

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

STAVE MARKINGS

Stave markings are those which are only rele-
vant to a particular instrument, and are drawn
on or near one of its staves - for instance,
notes, chords, rests, clef changes, transfers
and most types of line and text.

SYSTEM MARKINGS

System markings are those which apply to all
of the instruments, such as tempo text, title
text, rehearsal marks, key changes, time
signatures and some lines. Many of these (such
as rehearsal marks) are drawn at the top of
the system, and sometimes duplicated lower
  down as well.

DIFFERENCES IN BEHAVIOUR

The difference between stave and system mark-
ings is made clear on the Text and Lines
menus - above the dotted line are stave
  markings, below it system markings.

The main reason you should not confuse the two
is that stave and system markings are extract-
ed into parts differently. When you extract a
part, it contains the stave markings for only
the instrument extracted, but all of the syst-
em markings. This is how titles, tempo marks,
rehearsal marks and so on appear in all ex-
  tracted parts.

If you use a stave marking instead of a system
marking (or vice versa), the marking will be
  extracted incorrectly.

DOUBLE SYSTEM MARKINGS

If you switch the House styleGeneralSingle
system markings option off, some system mark-
ings will appear not only at the top of
systems but also at a suitable place in the
middle. Tempo text and rehearsal marks can
  appear duplicated on a system.

The two markings mimic each other; for
instance, if you edit one piece of tempo text,
a caret will appear in the other and both will change simultaneously. To drag or delete both
markings, do the operation to the upper one.

If in unusual circumstances you want two
particular marks to be different distances
from their respective staves, or if you want
to remove just the lower mark, drag or delete
the lower mark rather than the upper.
