GENERAL USE
Bar rests behave much the same as ordinary
rests: you can turn them into notes, copy
notes onto them, and copy them onto music in
order to turn it into a bar rest.
There are various additional operations,
listed below.
INSERTING A BAR REST
� Choose Rhythm�Bar rests�Single bar rest
� Click Adjust on the barline where you want
the bar to go.
ERASING A BAR IN ONE STAVE
� Double-click Select on the stave anywhere in
the bar
� Press F12 to turn it into a bar rest.
You can do the same to several bars at once;
see Passage operations.
ERASING A BAR IN ALL INSTRUMENTS
� Triple-click Select on any stave in the bar
� Press F12 to turn it into a bar rest.
You can do the same to several bars at once;
see Passage operations.
ERASING A BAR IN ONE VOICE
� Select an existing bar rest in the score
� Copy it onto the bar you want to erase using
Adjust for the first voice, Alt-Adjust for
the second voice.
REMOVING A BAR REST SYMBOL
Select a bar rest and press Delete; the bar
rest symbol will disappear. If the music was
in two voices, this will turn it back into
one voice.
To restore the bar rest symbol to a blank bar,
select another one and copy it back into the
bar using Adjust.
IRREGULAR BARS
(For music where bars have varying durations
not indicated by changes of time signature.)
� Insert a bar rest
� Type a time signature with the bar duration
you want into the Rhythm�Time signature
window (e.g. for a bar consisting of two
quavers, use 2/8 or 1/4)
� Put the time signature at the start of the
bar rest
� Transcribe the music for that bar
� Select the time signature and Delete it.
UPBEAT BARS
Create these in exactly the same way as
irregular bars (see above). Once you have
created an upbeat bar, you can put the desired
time signature before it.
BAR REST FORMAT
Choose this from the House style�Bar rests
menu:
� Normal bar rests - produces the standard
symbol
� 1 above bar rests - makes single bar rests
appear like a multirest (for instrumental
parts)
� Breve bar rests - draws a breve rest, for
long bars (e.g. in Renaissance music)
� No bar rests - leaves all empty bars
entirely blank; used in contemporary music
