This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Backdrop : The Backdrop component of RISCutils, gives the user the ability to have a backdrop randomly selected from a previously defined list, or to cycle through this list of backdrops in order using them one after the other and starting again at the begining of the list when the end is reached.
It has one major advantage over all the backdrop selection programs that I know of. This is that to be activated (i.e. to make it select a random/cycled backdrop) the user does not have to go to the hassle of manually altering all of their Pinboard files, replacing the line that puts a backdrop on the Pinboard (E.g. Backdrop -T ADFS::HardDisc4.$.!Boot.Resources.Configure.Textures.T6) with a line that runs a backdrop program (E.g. Run ADFS::HardDisc4.$.!Boot.!Backdrop :-with !Backdrop being a Backdrop selection program), which of course would have to be done every time the Pinboard is altered and saved.
Instead the Backdrop component of RISCutils re-routes the actual Backdrop command itself, so that when a standard Pinboard file is run, RISCutils's backdrop component is activated, the parameter (-S, -T, etc) and sprite attached to the Backdrop command are ignored, RISCutil's backdrop component then selects a sprite with attched parameter from it's own user-defined list, and puts that sprite on the Pinboard.
The end result is that if a un-altered Pinboard file is run several times, each time it is run a different sprite will be put on the Pinboard.
Format of the Backdrop component :
It is activated only when a Backdrop command with a space after the parameter word (E.g. -S, -T, -Centre etc) is issued. Any backdrop commands issued that do not have a space after the parameter word do exactly what they would normally do. So the commands :

And when using RISC OS 3.5 and above �Backdrop -Remove� and �Backdrop -R�
Would all work just as they normally would.
But any Backdrop commands issued, that have no space after the parameter word E.g. :

Would select a random / cycled backdrop from the user-defined list (RISCutils.User_Area.Files.Backdrops).
This file can be altered at any time, increased or decreased in size. The format used for the file is the same as the normal Backdrop format except the word 'Backdrop' does not have to be entered E.g. :

To find out the format for a particular sprite manually put it on the Pinboard in the manner you wish (E.g. Scaled) using the pinboard menu, and save a pinboard file. N.B. Please read all of this help file before doing so, otherwise there may be problems!
The first line of this file will refer to the backdropped sprite, giving the required format. An easy way to set up your 'Backdrops' list/file is simply to copy the first line of the pinboard file to the 'Backdrops' file (RISCutils.User_Area.Files.Backdrops), and delete the word backdrop from the line. If you do not fully understand the format 'backdropped' sprites use, this is probably the easiest method of setting up you 'Backdrops' list/file.
� Very important note: If the 'Backdrops' file is not present in the directory !RISCutils.User_Area.Files, then RISCutils's Backdrop component will not work.
If for some reason it is not present (E.g. you have mistakenly deleted it), a text editor such as !Edit or !Zap can be used to create an 'Obey' file, and this can be saved as a new 'Backdrops' file, to contain the list of Backdrops/sprites you wish to use. N.B. the file-name spelling 'Backdrops' must be exact! E.g. 'Backdrop' is not allowed.
The component can be configured using the !Run file, to select Backdrops randomly (note some Backdrop programs use BASIC's 'random number' feature, and can only select randomly when in the Desktop, and not from the Boot sequence. RISCutil's backdrop component can do both) or Cycle through them - one after the other each time it is activated, starting again at the begining when the last line of the file is reached.
To activate it simply run 'RISCutils', with the 'Backdrop' option in RISCutil's !Run file set to 'Y'. To de-activate it run the file RISCutils.User_Area.Files.NoBackdrop, and run 'RISCutils', with the 'Backdrop' option set to 'N.'
There is 1 minor problem with using RISCutil's Backdrop component. When active, sprites cannot be backdropped to the pinboard by dragging them on and then using the pinboard menu. If this is done the pinboard module is killed and can only be ReInitialised by resetting the computer.
This is not a major problem, as when the user wants to Backdrop a specific sprite as opposed to a random / cycled one, all they have to do is run the file RISCutils.User_area.Files.NoBackdrop to de-activate RISCutils and then a sprite can be dragged to the pinboard and backdropped as normal.
More importantly it must be noted, that once most users have decided which backdrops they prefer to have in the list for selection (RISCutils.User_Area.Files.Backdrops), they do not regularly change their backdrop and therefore have to drag sprite's to the pinboard etc. And for this rare occasion, the 'NoBackdrop' file work around is acceptable. In my opinon, the advantage of simply being able to run RISCutils and have all your Pinboard files automatically select random / cycled backdrops without having to alter them in the slightest (and again and again every time a new Pinboard is saved) by far outweighs the problem of dragging sprites to the pinboard. And indeed no other backdrop programs can do this.
N.B. One of my beta testers with RISC OS 3.1 had problems using the backdrop component on the same computer as Doggysofts Newer Look 2. I have tested to try and elimate this problem on my RiscPC (RISC OS 3.5), and found no problems. If anyone does encounter this problem, you have the choice of trying the following.
1. De-activate Newer-Look's Backdrop selection funtion (run your !Boot file, and set the 'Backdrop' to None.)
2. Remove Newer Look completly
3. Still use RISCutils but, keep it's Backdrop component de-activated using the !RUN file
N.B. This make be fixed in a later release of RISCutils.
