Programs/Celebratn/!Celebrate/!Help

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

                              (BIRTHDAY BOOK II)

                       by Simon Weaver (15) - 1993/1994

                             Acorn Computing 1994

---------------------------------- VERSION 2 -------------------------------

PURPOSE
-------
Celebration is a fully Risc Os compliant 'event' diary which can hold up
to 546 events (ie. a lot!) Each event can have a unique number of days
to warn before its occurance. Any coming events are reported on loading.
It is specifically for birthdays and wedding anniversaries etc. only and
is much better than using Alarm for the same purpose because of its design.
Events can be birthdays, wedding anniversaries or any other annual event
with a five character descriptor.
There are two sets of icons, a 3d and 2d set. The 3d set looks much
better, but only works on Risc OS 3 and loads itself automatically. So in
short, UPGRADE TO RISC OS 3!

HISTORY
-------
Celebration is the progression of Birthday Book featured in the November
issue of Acorn Computing. Thankyou to Mr Tony Stigle for the suggestion of
increasing the capacity of the program to wedding anniversaries and other
such events. Also thanks to Mr Phil Williams for his extra suggestions for
adding one off events, such as the local carnival.
As well as a wider range of events the program can now also take a date
of birth (or the year of the wedding etc.) and can work out the age and
also days since the event (days old), and perhaps rather worryingly how
many days left to any year's event. Also in the case of wedding
anniversaries you can be given its name (if it has one), such as paper or
golden. This is shown on the search and info window. If there is not a
specific meterial then 'No material' will be shown.
The program also has some other new features (bug fixes), and now works
FULLY on both Risc Os 2 and 3. The reason why the first release mucked up
on RO2 was due to my reluctance to break into my school during the summer
holidays to test it out! Sorry to any RO2 users who threw my program out
the window the moment they loaded it.
The program (mostly) supports the new RO3 style guidelines,
and even high resolution icons! It will use whatever radio icons you have
installed.
Finally, you can now set the warning date to the day itself if you wish
so.

UPDATING FROM BIRTHDAY BOOK
---------------------------
If, like me you had a large database of birthdays in Birthday book you may
not relish in typing them all in again. So all you need to do is :

 1. Make a backup copy of your original !Birthdays application.
 2. Copy !Celebrate to your hard disc or a spare floppy disk.
 3. Holding down shift double click on !Celebrate.
 4. Delete the 'Birthdays' DATA file from !Celebrate.
 5. Holding down shift double click on !Birthdays.
 6. Drag the 'Birthdays' file from inside !Birthdays to inside !Celebrate.
 7. Close the windows and load !Celebrate. If it fails to work then you have
done something wrong so try again from your backup copy.

NB: Files from Celebrate cannot be loaded into Birthday book.

LOADING BY AUTOBOOTING
----------------------
IMPORTANT : CELEBRATION MUST BE COPIED TO ANOTHER DISC TO BE ABLE TO SAVE
ANY NEW EVENTS, UNLESS YOU HAVE ARCFS READ WRITE (even then
the Acorn Computing disc will almost certainly become full).

Celebration is automatically loaded the first time a directory viewer is
opened (note it is not loaded when you open the Acorn Computing menu system
containing the program, but it is if you open the archive for it through
ArcFs, or copy it onto a hard disc or another floppy).
When auto booted, an immediate check is performed on the events, and if
a event is imminent then a warning window will appear allowing you to
look at the book or quit the program. When loaded by a boot file the program
will quit itself if there is no warning to report.

LOADING BY DOUBLE-CLICKING
--------------------------
If the program is loaded by double clicking a warning window will appear if
there is a event imminent, but obviously will not quit if there is not.
The program will install on the icon bar.

DESKTOP BOOT SAVING (RISC OS 3 ONLY)
------------------------------------
Please note the program DOES NOT support desktop boot saving under Risc Os
3. It originally did, but I removed it! For the technically minded this is
because the WIMP automatically loads !Boot files of each application it had
seen before, when autobooting, but if you had the application loaded when
you created the boot file you would end up with two copies running together.
If you want the program loaded all the time change the line:

'Filer_Boot <pathname>.!Celebrate' to 'Filer_Run <pathname>.!Celebrate'

THE ICON BAR MENU
-----------------
On the icon bar there are four options:

SHOW BOOK : Open the event book. After loading this would be at the present
            month.

SAVE DATA : This option is needed to update the event list on disc. Note
that the information is not automatically saved, but you are
warned before quitting if there is any unsaved data.

SORT RECORDS: This option should normally be left untouched, normally there
is a tick by the side, which indicates the records will be
sorted before being displayed in the book. This option should
only be turned off when you have A LOT of records, to speed up
updating of the windows. When left off the events are
displayed in the order they were entered in.

NOTE: When updating a month's event list the hourglass is
shown with a percentage below it. When it reaches 100% the
percentage will switch off. The time after this until the
hourglass disappears is the time it takes to sort.

QUIT : This will launch a nuclear rocket from my house to blow you up.

TUTORIAL.. ( I advise you to print this out to make it easy to follow ).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOR INFORMATION REGARDING LEAP YEARS SEE THE 'PROBLEMS' SECTION BELOW
The event book itself is very simple to use. To open it click Select on
the icon bar icon. At the top is the name of the month being currently
displayed. This could also display 'Warnings' where any warnings are shown
from all months. By clicking on the month, or the arrow beside it you can
change the month currently displayed.
When the program is loaded the first time there are no events in it.
You can start by adding your own birthday. Click on the 'New Event' icon at
the bottom. A window will appear. Type in your name, then press Return and
type in the date you were born in. Click on the month, and select the
correct month you were born in. Click where it says 'Ignore age/Years' and
type in the year you were born. You can now click on 'Last' at the bottom
and it will be registered. If you wanted to add another event you
should click on 'Another'. If you wanted to be warned earlier than seven
days about your birthday you can change the warning days number. The main
purpose of this is so you can be warned longer in advance about relatives
living in Australia, than you may need about your next door neighbour's cat.
This warning can be between 0 and 99 days before the event. Leap years,
lengths of months etc. are correctly observed.
If it is a wedding anniversary then you can click on 'Wedding Anniversary',
or for another type of event click on 'Other' then type in a five letter
descriptor.
A one off event will delete itself as soon as you accept the warning for
it.
Now you can click on the month of your birthday at the top of the book
window. Your birthday will now appear. If it is within the x days warning
date, it will appear red - otherwise black (or green if it is a one off
event). If you click any button on your birthday a menu will appear giving
different options. Most of these are self explanitory. Normally the 'Accept
Warning' will be greyed out, except when the event is in red. Remember thoughwhen you accept a warning you will not be reminded again until the next year,so it is best to only click on Accept Warning when you are sure you won't
forget.
There is one final menu. By clicking Menu over the event book window
(not over the date, or any events) a menu appears which can tell you how
many records are present, and other things. The only new thing is the Search
option.
By choosing Search any event can be located. All you have to do is type
in whole or part of the name. All punctation is ignored so:

John Smith - JOHN SMITH - smith - jOhN sMiTh - ohnSmit - John Smith!
JO34#!h#n5sM5ith - J O H N - Get the idea? - would all find John Smith.

When you click on 'Find' or press Return the first matching record is shown
(if there is one), and the corresponding month is opened. If one record is
found, the a new 'Next' icon will appear. This will show any further
matching records, so you could find all the Johns, or all the Smiths in the
book. It can also be useful before adding a new event to check if it was
already in the book. (Note: You cannot just press Return for each record)

PROBLEMS (well, sort of harmless things which I feel like worrying you with)
AND OTHER BITS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
* NOTE : The original trouble with updating on RO2 has been fixed under
most (if not all) circumstances, but I still don't know what was wrong!

* Internally the book holds the next date for each event. If you change the
year, this can upset the book. So quite simply don't change the year! But
as RiscOs 2 users will be only too familiar, when you perform a hard reset
the year is reset to 1988. Luckily I am extremely clever, and have made
the program throw up an error message if the year is set to 1988 or 1989.
So unless your clock is set wrongly you have nothing to worry about.

* Theoretically people with occasions on 29th February should only get your
consideration every four years, but most people celebrate on one of the
adjacent days. The program will only warn for February 29th every 4 years,
so if any of your friends (or you!) need this date it may be wise to
give the date as 28th February or 1st March. You may like to enter two
events so you can be reminded when it is their official date.
Because of these complications with 29th February you cannot use
the days left function for a coming event on that date for any year. Also
the age and material function (wedding anniversaries) count EVERY year
as another year and not each four years. Well as only 0.07% of events can
be on this date it is just going to have to be one of those things, but I
assume most people prefer to celebrate every year and not every four years
  anyway!

* If you accidentally select the Accept Warning option before you are ready
to acknowledge the event, choose Edit Details for the event and immediately
click on Accept. This will reset the warning to the next date for the
  event.

* Celebration only holds 546 birthdays (that is 21K - 38 bytes for
each), and so if you really do have more friends TOUGH, unless you change
it yourself or send me a copy of the Risc Os 3 PRMS or a RiscPC.

* In modes with less then 16 colours, the windows look terrible on Risc Os 3
(with dithering set on) because the birthday book logo's background goes
white. This could be changed by giving the sprites a mask, but I have
decided against it because it makes the program take up over 20k more.

* ANY PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED WILL BE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED, it improves my
programming as well as the usability, and if you send a disc and SSAE
then I will try to fix the problem as soon as possible. I have extensively
tested the program, so it should work fine under most circumstances.

* Copying this program for other people is not allowed unless they buy
a copy of Acorn Computing for this month, but you can of course make
backup copies. If you want you can delete this help file (well it is
over 12k) but please leave credit type bits for future reference?!

Remember suggestions for programs of a simple desktop nature, would be much
appreciated. After all if it was not for received suggestion you would not
have this update! But please no address books!
