SIBELIUS 7 versus SIBELIUS 6 Sibelius Software recently released a cut-down version of Sibelius 7, called Sibelius 6. This is aimed at people doing fairly modest things with music, or (in schools) at students up to GCSE level. Sibelius 6 is to Sibelius 7 what Junior Impression is to Impression Publisher - you can do simple things pretty well, but more complicated situations can become very cumbersome or even impossible to cope with. You can phone Sibelius Software if you want a demo disc specifically of Sibelius 6, but here we give an idea of what the differences are. PRICE Sibelius 6 costs (at time of writing) �160 + VAT. Sibelius 7 costs �795 + VAT. But wait! Before you die of fright, Sibelius 7 is set at the standard price for similar types of program on the Mac and IBM PC. We're well aware that you've got to be pretty serious about music to spend this kind of money, so for existing Acorn users who can't justify the cost to themselves we have frequent SPECIAL OFFERS. These reduce Sibelius 7 to virtually half price to non-professionals. Basically you can qualify if you sign our sheet saying that you're not going to use the program for commercial gain. INSTRUMENTS On Sibelius 6 you can't define your own instruments or modify the name, transposition etc. of existing ones. This means that you can't (say) put the name of a person against their stave in a musical, or create unusual instruments such as Xylorimba. BIG SCORES Sibelius 6 allows up to 32 staves: 2 for each of 16 instruments. This is fine for a lot of music, but probably not for largish groups such as brass bands or orchestras. Sibelius 7 has extra facilities for doing larger scores, such as rehearsal marks beyond 'Z' and automatic player numbers so that two flutes can share one stave. Sibelius 6 is also limited to 512 bars of music, whereas Sibelius 7 has effectively no limit. PAGE SIZE Sibelius 7 can cope with pages up to a metre square, with stave sizes adjustable in units of 0.1 mm. Sibelius 6 is restricted to A4 with a choice of only 5 different stave sizes. CONTEMPORARY AND EARLY MUSIC Sibelius 7 has lots more symbols for notating unusual situations that Sibelius 6. Most of them are to be found on the Symbols->Transfers and More transfers menus. ADJUSTABLE STYLE Sibelius 7's very useful House style menu is completely missing from Sibelius 6 - only a few of the options can be done in other ways.
