F/ROMs1

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

                        ROM's and ROM images

***********************************************************************
I think that, without exception, the ROM manuals I have all say that
as far is known their ROM does not clash with any other ROM's. I do not
know how many ROM's I have at present but for the Electron alone it was
well over 40 at the last count. So to permutate all possible
combinations over 16 pages and with ROM128 and ROM256 involved I will
leave to the dedicated reader.
Known ROM clashes.
CLICKhastoberemovedfromsystem to run VIEWHLP (this latter is one
of Derek Walker's ROM's as is RAMUTIL). The clash between CLICK and
CLICK and VIEWHLP is because my CLICK is version 1.04 - earlier
versions do not clash.
When I use my T2PEG400 ROM (tape to disk transfer) with PEG400 DFS I
find that the subsequent LOADing from disk (after I have found where
the author loaded his tape program) will not work unless I have killed
STARGRAPH.
When using *WORD with Advanced Computer Products 1770 DFS I find that
I have to kill the Screenprint Colour ROM. This is probably because
the the ROM commands are key instructed.
Also I kill the MODE7 Simulator ROM when using *WORD though I am not
sure that recent problems I have had were due specifically to this ROM.
I will come back the Elkman ROM Manager which I also kill when using
*WORD.
One clash that I am sure about is that AMX Art, Stop Press and CLICK
cannnot all be in the system at the same time as they all program the
port interface chip 6522. Therefore, any two have to be removed or
switched out to run the other.
Known MODE clashes.
SloggerSTOPPRESS(the earlier version not SP64), ADDCOMM, AMX, LISP
and ADT will only run in 32K MODE, and ADT will not run in 32K TURBO.
ROM images.
I have produced ROM images of Slogger's Elkman ROM in 32K MODE and 64K
MODE using both Slogger's Expansion ROM and Derek Walker's RAMUTIL and
in all cases the *KILLROM command is completely lost (only the
equivalent of *OFFROM is achieved. Even then a *OFFROM (or *KILLROM) is
not held through a BREAK as it should. I have even tried LOADing the
image (however produced) into BBRAM write protected and it still will
work with these commands. All other Elkman commands seem to work
satisfactorily so the image is still useful to me, especially as I can
kill ROM's using CLICK. Has anybody else had this problem?
I had a lot of problems getting a ROM image of ADDCOMM to work but
eventually solved the problem. After *RLOADing the ROM image in 32K
MODE I then found that I to do CTRL/BREAK and then the sequence
*FX163,0/RETURN/BREAK. The reason that I am so interested is seeing if
images of my ROM's will work is so that they can be put into a ROM128
or ROM256. Not only does this give my main Electron system maximum
access to commands, etc but also allows for clashing ROM's to be
switched out. For this reason I have taken out my AMX ROM from page 13
at the moment for I have some sort of mouse clashing that I cannot
solve with it installed. As I have several ROM's (AMX and XBASIC are
two of them) that only work above BASIC I need to get a ROM128 fitted
into page 13.
ROM128 and ROM256.
Additionally to ROM's shown as fitted to my main Electron system in the
CLICK article the 128 has ADI, ADT, DUMPMASTER, Slogger PRINTER, *TREK,
STARGRAPH and STARMON. The 256 has pairs LISP and Serial ROM, PMS NTQ
and FONTS, and AMX STOP PRESS and SUPPORT. The other four pairs are
blank awaiting other ROM pairs.
