Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk --------------------------- November 1991 ------------- This is the November '91 issue of Archimedes World. All the software in this issue has been carefully chosen to give you a balanced selection of entertaining and practical items. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully. All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1991. They may not be copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. They should NOT be distributed as Public Domain. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. The golf score card, Superior Golf course, !ModeUtil and !Keys applications are all public domain. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original. Archived The '!AWNov91' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWNov91' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying When the '!AWNov91' application icon is dragged to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software from the RAM disk it will need to be set to 1500k. Four megabytes of memory is required to comfortably run the software from there. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by selecting the 'Open viewer' items from the menu and dragging the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied across. They can then be loaded without using the disk menu. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our built-in text displayer module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs, read any instructions and open program directory viewers. Each item on the main menu leads to a sub-menu. Click the select button once over the icon to select a menu item. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. Each sub-menu contains one or more programs. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. When you select the 'Open viewer' option a directory viewer will open up on the desktop. This allows you to run the programs by double-clicking or you can drag them to another directory viewer to copy them onto another disk. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu which is usually the main one. The Programs !Archrome is an extremely powerful and yet very easy to use painting application. It runs on the desktop and is fully RISC OS compliant, which means that it will work along with any other multi-tasking application. Whether you want to draw colourful, highly detailed pictures or just want to perform image processing on scanned sprites, !Archrome will cater for your needs. Arxe Systems and Archimedes World present an exclusive playable demo of Bambuzle. This action puzzle game involves guiding coloured balls which roll along channels and fall into pods. As with all classic games the idea is very simple and playing becomes compulsive. Be warned, once you have played through the two levels in this demo you will be hooked! 3D Dominoes brings the famous pub game to your desktop. It runs on the desktop and allows up to four players, human or computer, to play against each other. Clear graphics and easy operation make this game suitable for young and old alike. Since BT introduced charges for using directory enquiries they have had to make over 1,000 employees, who used to handle the calls, redundant. Obviously not as many people are using the service now as before. To help you save money we present a desktop application called !Exchange. It lets you enter an area name and then it will display the area's dialling code. Alternatively you can specify the area code and the program will display the place that the code corresponds to. For example, it is very handy for finding out what part of the country a phone number in an advert corresponds to. Often the best computer games are ones which accurately simulate a real life sport. !Archery re-creates the thrill of aiming a bow and arrow at a distant target and letting the arrow fly. If you have taken the wind direction and speed into consideration and your aim is true, the arrow will sink into the bulls eye. The distance of the target can be increased to make the game more challenging. Wire frame 3D graphics are used to represent the bow and arrow in a realistic manner. Create function key strips easily and quickly with this friendly desktop application. !KeyStrip opens a window and displays the function key strip title along with the normal, SHIFT and CTRL function key entries. Enter a short description of what each key will do when pressed and then print the strip. The strips can be saved for later alteration and printing if required. !MapDisc opens a window on the desktop and shows graphically what is contained on the disk in the currently selected drive. A grid of tiny coloured blocks represent the different types of data stored on the disk. It includes such things as the root directory, boot blocks, free space, start of file, rest of file and bad blocks. It gives an at-a-glance picture of what state the disk is in. If there are any errors on the disk surface you can identify where they are instantly. The 3D Graphics relocatable module provides programmers with some helpful routines which make creating and displaying 3D graphics much easier. The SWI calls can be used in any language but the demo programs provided are written in BASIC. The 3DGraphics module must be loaded into memory before the demo programs can be run. The source code for the module is also supplied so that it can be amended to suit your needs. Regular Features The Arcade contains software for game players. This issue we present an Impression document which, when printed, produces a golf score card for use with any of the Archimedes golf games available or even the real thing. You can now keep a record of your best scores to show your friends. Also there is a new golf course for use with Superior Golf. The ReadMe file explains how to set up the course for use with the game. To fill the spare space on this cover disk we have included some Public Domain software called !ModeUtil and !Keys. They are included on the disk as free software. As they are public domain you are free to copy the programs as many times as you like and to give copies to whoever you choose. This only applies to the public domain software on this disk. Earn �800 From Your Program We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. We are interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens, animations, clip art sprite/!Draw files, music, sound samples, games, demos and anything else that is interesting and original. The only limit which we apply to software for the cover disk is that it has to be less than 300k in size. Look inside the magazine for full instructions on how to submit programs to Archimedes World for publication. Ideas If you have great ideas for useful or entertaining programs but lack the programming know how then Archimedes World may be able to help. We can turn your ideas into working programs. Just send in your program description to us and we will evaluate it. It does not have to be very detailed, just clear enough to give us an accurate idea of what the progam will be able to do and what benefits it will bring. Archimedes world will then publish the program for the benefit of all our readers and give both you and the programmer a handsome reward.
