11_10_87/VGUIDE

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Review by R.McDermott: (Teacher, Comprehensive School in Essex.).

"VIEW A Dabhand Guide" is a spiral bound book of 250 pages about the VIEW
word processor, Viewspell and Viewindex.

The first 15 chapters take the reader through the various facilities
available with VIEW, using a tutorial style approach. There are many
examples illustrating each of these facilities.

Chapter 1: This is a brief introduction explaining what VIEW is, what
equipment is needed and how to access the word processor.

Chapter 2: This chapter provides a first introduction to word processing
by explaining the "command" and "edit" modes with clearly illustrated
examples showing exactly what is happening on the "word processing" and
"command mode" screens.

Chapter 3: Changing rulers, previewing text, tab stops and printing text
are clearly explained, again with many useful examples.

Chapter 4: Here, saving and loading text is examined using a variety of
filing systems. The cassette filing system, disc filing system (DFS),
advanced disc filing system (ADFS) and network filing system (NFS) can all
be used to load and save text, but each has its own idiosynchrosies which
are explained. The use of "!Boot" files to set up the word processor is
introduced.

Chapter 5: Markers can be used to move, copy and delete text. Also, text
between two markers can be saved, or text loaded to a marker. These
rather obscure facilities are clearly explained and again illustrated with
appropriate examples.

Chapters 6,7 & 8: These chapters cover formatting, justification, and
search for or replace strings or individual characters, in a way that
makes it appear simple - unlike the VIEW manual. Stored commands and
margins are explained, again with illustrations that are essential for
understanding. Text can be centred and/or justified (given a tidy
right-hand edge) and line spacing can be altered, at will.

Chapter 9: A very useful chapter on page layout which explains how you
can alter the gaps at the top and bottom of your page, put headings and
footings automatically onto each page (including page numbers, chapter
numbers etc.).

Chapters 10 & 12: "Macros" are introduced enabling chapters, sections and
sub headings to be automatically set up in the correct numerical sequence
for printing a book for example. They also allow a single document to be
"personalised" by incorporating specific individual data (name, address,
etc.) from a list given later in the document.

Chapter 11: This chapter contains a wealth of information on printer
drivers, control codes and highlight codes together with innumerable
illustrations on their use. There are programmes for your own printer
driver generator which you can tailor to your own requirememts and even
the prickly problem of printing ` (pound sign) and # (hash sign) in the
same document on the same printer is clearly and simply explained.

Chapter 13 & 14: If you need to type documents longer than allowed by the
computer memory and print them out, you will be able to do so after
reading these chapters which conclude with a useful section on hints and
tips.

Chapter 15: "VIEW Manager" is a programme which offers a visually
attractive and simple to operate "front end" to VIEW enabling:

1) easy loading of VIEW files;
2) an extended catalogue system;
3) selection of your own template files; and
4) a description of files on disc.

The programme listing is given but it is very long. If you have the
patience to type this in it is a most attractive alternative way of
entering VIEW since it can be called by a "!Boot" file.

Chapter 16: "VIEWSPELL" is a spelling checker for VIEW files. This
chapter takes the reader through its various facilities.

Chapter 17: "VIEWINDEX" is a VIEW utility allowing you to create an index
to any VIEW document. Its use is explained in this section for those who
have the VIEWINDEX programme.

Chapters 18, 19 & 20: These chapters contain utility programmes to help
word processors (those that do the typing) to get the most out of VIEW.
This excellent suite of programmes contains a screen layout driver (shows
exactly how your page will look), a recovery programme (for when you
accidentally press the break key), a help ROM, and mamy more.

THE PROGRAMMES DISC: This disc contains all the programmes listed in the
DAB hand guide and several more. It also includes all the text examples
given in the book, a selection of printer drivers for various printers and
a selection of "!Boot" files. All programmes work without any errors.

SUMMARY: This is one of the best books it has been my pleasure to review
and one of the best books that I have seen written for the BBC Micro.
The explanations are clear and precise and illustrated by textual examples
where appropriate (which is just about everywhere). The accompanying
programme disc is well worth the extra since some of the programmes are
long and in machine code and could easily contain the usual difficult to
trace typing errors. An excellent all round VIEW guide, well done Bruce
Smith.
