Ignotum Perignotius - an explanation obscurer than the thing it is meant to explain.
-This is how I felt text books described scientific equations, in an obscure, dated and confusing manner - usually for a formula which is actually fairly simple to understand. This is if they even attempt to explain it, often they just dump you with something like N=N0e^(-kt) and leave you to figure it out.
I wrote Ignotum to provide me with a quick and easy way to find the equation that I happen to be looking for. I also made sure that it gives you information on the equations, at least to tell you what the letters stand for and often more detailed explanations. The formulae are suitable for GCSE and A level.
To load Ignotum, double-click on its icon. It should install itself on the icon bar. If your computer is set up for 3D windows, Ignotum will take advantage of it. The program also fully supports interactive help on both windows and menus.
To display the formula window click on the iconbar icon. A window with three sections should appear:
Top section - this is the control panel. It displays what topic is currently selected. It also has a toggle icon for the formula information. Should you wish to change the topic you can do so by clicking on the menu icon next to the selected topic. A menu will appear from which you can choose a new topic, from the 21 available.
Note: When you choose a topic, Ignotum will try to access the disc that it was loaded up on, so try to keep the disc in all the time, or for best results install it onto a hard drive. It does this because all the formulae are kept on disc, not in memory - there are well over 220 formulae and the program would have to take up about 30k more to load them all up at once. By keeping the program small, one megabyte users will be able to run it alongside Impression or another text editor as they work.
Middle section - This is the list of the formulae available in the chosen topic. To select a formula click on it with select or adjust. If the information window is open it will display any information on this formula.
It is very easy to export the formula of your choice, just drag and drop it into a filer window to save it to disc, or straight into a word processor such as Impression or Edit. If the word processor accepts text files then it will accept the formula. If you drag with adjust then the formula window will close afterwards. If you have solid drags then a translucent sprite will be used rather than a dotted box.
Note: Using the standard system font it is sometimes difficult to express the correct mathematical symbols, therefore:
^=to the power of (commonly used in programming anyway)
^� is used instead of the square root sign
> is used in the differentiation section to mean 'differentiates to' rather than 'is greater than'
{ is used as the integral sign in the integration section
All the other symbols are standard, eg |x| means the modulus of x.
Bottom section - displays information on the selected formula.
It is possible to save the set-up of the program so it is loaded up how you want, just set it up how you want and choose 'Save choices' from the iconbar menu. This is what's saved:
� Your choice of topic. I keep it on 'Trig Identities' as I find this the most useful.
� The highlighted equation
� Whether formula information is on or off
� Whether the window opens or not on startup. If it does open, the position and scroll positions of window are also saved.
To quit the application, choose the 'Quit' option from the iconbar menu.
