!Manual/Data/Chapter6

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Processing an Image

If Preview/ process has been selected from the Preferences window, then the current image will be displayed in a window, opened when Optical is given a page of text. It can also be opened from the OCRed text window, described in Chapter 7 - The OCRed text Window.

If the image has previously been OCRed, then the relevant characters may also be highlighted.

The strip of picture icons at the top of the window is called a toolbox.

Here is a guide to these icons:

6.1 Read Image

Clicking on this icon starts the OCR process.

6.2 Open Font manager

This icon opens the Font manager window which looks after the different fonts that Optical can read. For full details on its use, see Chapter 9 - Teaching/ Selecting Fonts.

6.3 Scale Image

The magnifying glass icon opens the Scale image window which allows the scanned image to be scaled to a manageable size.

This facility is fully described in Chapter 10.1 - Scaling the scanned image.

6.4 The Column Selector

6.4.1 Marking a column of text

This utility is useful if there are several columns of text on a page.

Select this icon to mark columns.

Clicking on the image and moving the mouse draws a flexible rectangle. Releasing the mouse places a green frame on top of the image, bounding the area of text to be read. Up to twenty such frames can be defined. Interlinking red lines between these frames indicate the order in which they are read.

Moving the mouse pointer over the inside of a frame changes it to a hand shape. This means that you can click and drag that frame to a new position.

Moving the pointer over one of the small boxes at each corner of the frame changes it to a compass shape. This means that you can click and adjust the size of that frame.

There are small solid red squares at the end of the red interlinking lines. Clicking one of these and moving the mouse allows you to change the reading order of the frames - simply drag the end of the line to another frame.

6.4.2 Automatic column detection

To make marking columns easier it is also possible for Optical to attempt to find them automatically.

Select the same icon as in the last section, and then double-click on the image.

If you click over a frame already defined, then only columns within that frame will be found. There are sometimes problems finding columns within closed areas of a page. Therefore selecting a region within that closed area, and double clicking on it will find those columns.

If you double click with Select then all other defined frame definitions will be removed before selecting the new ones. Clicking with Adjust keeps them.

6.4.3 Marking an inconsistent region

It is also possible to mark areas of text, or pictures which are inconsistent with the surrounding text, which might otherwise produce reading problems.

To mark an area like this, hold Alt on the keyboard down while making a frame. The resulting frame is red with a crossed lines inside.

Optical will attempt to read the contents of the frame, unless they are too large (as in the case of pictures.) Thus drop caps at the start of paragraphs can be marked in this way.

Optical will also automatically put in these frames when it thinks necessary, during the OCR process.

6.4.4 Removing frames

With this icon selected, frames can be removed.

Move the mouse over the frame to be deleted (so that the pointer changes into a cross) and then click with Select.

Double-clicking with Select over any part of the image, deletes all frames.

Note If there are frames already defined when the Preview/ process window opens, this is normally because Keep previous frames is selected in the Preferences window. This option is described in Chapter 5.2.2 - Keep previous frames.

6.5 Rotate Image

To rotate an image, select this button. The mouse pointer should change into a rotation symbol when it is moved over the scanned image.

To rotate, move the end of the arrow on the mouse pointer to the bottom left of a letter at the start of a line of text, and press Select. Keeping Select pressed, move the mouse and a line should follow it. Place the mouse pointer at the bottom right of the letter at the end of the line of text, and release Select. The image should then rotate to make the text upright.

If the image is quite large, then an hourglass appears to indicate progress.

If a hand scanner is being used, then you will often want to scan a page at right angles, to fit whole lines in. Double clicking on the image conveniently rotates it by 90 (a right angle.)

6.6 The Colour Mapper

This feature allows a certain amount of editing to be performed on a scanned image. Operations such as inverting colours, blanking out areas containing pictures and borders, and filtering out multi-coloured backgrounds can be performed.

To do the latter, the page needs to be scanned in more than two colours, so that they can be separated. Remember that Optical can only accept images with a maximum of 16 colours or shades of grey.

Colour mapping requires more memory than normal, so if you are short of memory and simply blanking out areas of a page, it might be necessary to do this using !Paint instead. !Paint is supplied with your computer on Applications Disc 1 if you have RISC OS 2, or in ROM (click on the Apps icon on the icon bar) if you have RISC OS 3.

Clicking on this icon opens two views of the image, and the Colour mapping window will be described in a moment. The left image is the original, and the right is the edited one. The right-hand image may already have been processed, filtering out light colours, and bringing out dark colours.

The right-hand image is made up of only black and white. White areas represent the page, and black areas the text.

The Colour mapping window in the centre of the screen provides the necessary tools to edit the image.

Clicking on any of the Text or Background icons swaps them between Text and Background. If one is Text, the colour behind it will map to black on the processed image. If it reads Background, the colour behind it will map to white.

Pressing the Invert button has the same effect as clicking once on all of the coloured icons. Therefore when the colours are mapped, they will be the opposite of what they were previously.

All Text changes all the colours to text (ie. black.)

All Backgr. does the opposite and changes all the colours to background (ie. white.)

There are two methods of actually mapping the colours. For the whole image to be processed, simply click on the Update page button. The alternative is to select a region of the image using the mouse. If you click with Select on either of the two images, and move the mouse around while keeping Select pressed, a flexible rectangle appears. On releasing Select, the area inside the rectangle is mapped.

Scale... opens the Scale image window which allows the displayed image to be scaled to a manageable size. This facility is fully described in Chapter 10.1 - Scaling the scanned image.

OK returns to the Preview/ process window.

6.7 Rescan Page

Clicking on this icon re-opens the Scanner window, but is only enabled if the current image was scanned in directly. This allows columns to be selected on a scanned page at low resolution, and then to have only the selected region scanned again at a higher resolution. For more details on its use see Chapter 4.3.7 - Scan area.

6.8 Merging Scanned Images

This feature becomes functional when a Sprite file is dropped onto the scanned image.

Hand-held scanners are usually unable to scan a whole page of A4 because of their size. However Merging allows a page to be scanned in parts and then pasted together to make a whole page again.

You will first be asked whether you want to Replace or Merge the images. Select Merge.

The Merge window will then open, with the original image surrounded by a white border. The new image is attached to the mouse pointer so that it can be moved about. Clicking with Select puts the image in place.

It is also possible to use the cursor keys to move the image with precision, and to then press Return to set the image.

To change the point where the mouse pointer is anchored to the image, hold Shift down and then move either the mouse, or use the cursor keys. Then release Shift.

Clicking Menu over this window gives you access to the Scale image window, described in Chapter 10.1 - Scaling the scanned image.

6.9 The Preview/ Process Menu

A menu is also available with the Preview/ process window. Click with Menu over the image to open it.

The only new option is whether to show the toolbox, or not.
