!QTMTrack/Docs/Questions

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Questions and answers about QTM (Queue The Music) 1993/4 Phoenix/Quantum
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This help file is in a different layout from other help files, in that it
is in the form of questions and answers. The answers should help to clear up
any querys you have about the QTM player. If you have any questions about
QTM that aren't answered here, then contact me, Phoenix, at the address in
the !Help file.

Q. What is better about the QTM player compared to other PD or commercial
Sound Tracker players?

A. QTM has been developed over the last 1 years to play accurately any
orignal ProTracker type song module - unlike other PD players, which only
provide a small number of the many ProTracker effects. As to commercial
players, QTM is more accurate in its effect handling than even the very best
of the currently available commercial packages.

Q. How can I use QTM in a demo or game?

A. The QTM module provides a wide range of SWIs to cover most uses of the
module as a song controller. There is also a '*'command version of most of
these SWIs - for using the module from the CLI prompt (see 'CLIcmds' help
file). If you find that the SWI you require is not listed in the 'SWIs' file,
contact me (address in the Help file) to see if the latest version of QTM
contains that SWI.

Q. What is the point in using older 4 channel song modules, rather than 8 or
16 channel songs, which were designed for the Archimedes?

A. The 4 channel ProTracker song format used by QTM has been around on 16
bit computers for several years now, and has become the standard song format
for these computers. 8 and 16 channel songs are fairly new and tend to be of
a lower quality, they also use twice (or four times) the processor speed
when playing, and so are not usually suitable for use in demos or games.
Also, there are now thousands of 4 channel ProTracker songs available from
PD libraries - most of which are better than any of the few 8 or 16 channel
songs currently available.

Q. Ok, so I've got the module, but how can I get/write music for it?

A. Currently only the QTM player has been released, but in the fairly
near future, you can expect a full ProTracker style QTM editor to be
available.
Most PD libraries can provide you with all the music you'll ever need!

Q. I've written a song using another editor package on the Archimedes, and
want to play it on QTM - how can I do that?

A. At the moment QTM will only accept ProTracker (and similar) modules for
playing, although when the editor is released, it will come with a more
advanced player which will be able to cope with almost every 4 channel song
format available on the Archimedes inc. Coconizer, Symphony and Tracker file
formats. If you want to run one of these songs on QTM at the moment, you
will need a separate converter (- PD libraries will be able to help you
here).

Q. After hearing an excellent ProTracker song on the Amiga, I copied it onto
the Archimedes, to listen to it using QTM - but it plays very badly and
sounds nothing like the orignal - what can I do now?

A. The chances of this happening are (very) small, but if it does happen you
should first make sure that the song you are trying to play is not a
'Packed' song (to do this on the Arc, load the song file into !Edit, and see
if the first four letters are 'PP20' or 'PACK') - if it is one, then go back
to the Amiga and get another copy, re-saved from ProTracker with the 'Pack'
option off.
If it wasn't packed, and/or still doesn't play correctly, then send a
quick note to me, along with a copy of the song, and I'll see what I can
do...

Q. Well I've got my Amiga song working, but it doesn't sound as crisp and
clear as it did on the Amiga, even when pumped through my s of Hi-Fi
equipment - is there anything I can do to boost the quality?

A. Yes! The reason why the song doesn't sound as clear, is because of the
low quality hi-pass sound filter built into all the old Archimedes computers
(pre Risc PC). A similar filter is built into Amigas, but it is controlable
by software, and is usually off. Unluckily the Archimedes filter is not
software controlable, and so is always on.
To get round this small problem, you will need to open up your computer,
and plug in a special lead into the aux sound connecter (PL5). This is very
simple, and also very cheap to do - the whole lead costing around 1.25.
This lead will provide an extra, non-filtered, sound output socket, ready to
connect to your monitor or hi-fi. If you don't feel like doing this yourself,
try looking through the adds in magazines - there are now several companies
selling filter-bypass kits, and they ARE worth it!!!

Q. Well, I've got the song playing OK on the QTM module and so I want to use
the player in my next PD game... Is that Ok?

A. Yes - The QTM player can be used freely in any PD application. As for
commercial use, this will usually be OK, but I have to insist that you
contact me first, before using it in commercial games/packages.
For more information, see the 'Licence' help file.
