V/+AVART1

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

                          ADVENTURE ARTICLES

IN A noticeably bigger than expected EUG Adventure section, we present
not only the tried and tested walkthrough to Scott Adams' spooky GHOST
TOWN but also articles on the riddle of Adventure #14, and the thoughts
of Jonathan Partington, author of classic Topologika adventures such as
AVON and SPY SNATCHER, on the subject of designing your own.

The Biggest Adams' Mystery Of All! - By (The) Dave
==================================================
A WIZARD by the name of H. Persson emailed EUG recently noting he was
"sure it would have been pointed out by now" but did we know that a
certain web page at the catchy address of
      http://www.lysator.liu.se/adventure/scott_adams_14.html

had a lot of information regarding the 'lost' fourteenth Scott Adams
adventure queried on in EUG #53's PYRAMID OF DOOM walkthrough. Well, it
HADN'T until then and what became very clear just a couple of mouse
clicks later was that EUG was not the first to ask the question. In
fact, over different formats with different software companies producing
their different conversions in different countries, there is no "final
truth" as to what adventure number fourteen actually is on the BBC
series. It's likely that when Adventure International's UK base came to
its sticky end in 1985 (on the production front; I realise its releases
were supplied by ADVENTURESOFT for a long time after that!), the four-
teenth classic was either in or still awaiting production. Hence, it is
not missing from anyone's collection as it never actually existed.
   Out of interest, on the TI-99/4A (the American console Scott Adams
originally wrote it for), its title was RETURN TO PIRATE'S ISLE, a
sequel to PIRATE ADVENTURE (Adventure #2) and this is also the case with
the list of Scott Adams' adventures that graced the Spectrum. Both end:
ten SAVAGE ISLAND 1, eleven SAVAGE ISLAND 2, twelve GOLDEN VOYAGE, thir-
teen SORCEROR OF CLAYMORGUE CASTLE and fourteen RETURN TO PIRATE'S ISLE.
BUCKAROO BANZAI never made it to either of either of these machines and
only with the Commodore 64 can be sure you have a version you can com-
plete. Note even this completable version is bugged in some places too!
   As you'll discover if you visit the web page, this is a very confus-
ing area but thankfully it's not one BBC/Elk owners need worry about too
much as on their format THERE IS NO ADVENTURE #14. Of course, as
explained in EUG #53, there might as well be no Adventure #15 either as
BUCKAROO BANZAI is so badly bugged, the game is unplayable on the BBC
series' format. ELECTRON USER's review in Vol 5 No 5 however that un-
bugged copies did make it into circulation eventually. Has anyone read-
ing this got one of them?
   To round off with an apology, EUG stated some time ago that Scott
Adams was now the creator of Dilbert and had made "millions of pounds".
In fact, the two Scott Adams are totally different people. It's valid
though that, providing you make no profit out of them, the games can now
be freely distributed. Hoorah!

Designing Adventure Puzzles - By Jonathan R. Partington
=======================================================
IT'S probably best to say first what this article is NOT about. I re-
cieve quite a lot of feedback from people who have played adventures I
have written, and the following is a typical message:
   "Thanks for your hints in regard to Fyleet. I've made considerable
progress since dealing with the wizard and am now up to around 300
points. I've still had no luck getting the phoenix out of its present
state. I did manage to get Bacchus to do something useful for me; how-
ever, this raises the question as to whether the barrel is useful or
can be ignored. Also, is the symbol of Hurgenpor (in the tunnel after
riding the Hippogriff) useful at all? I'm currently trying to deal with
the Dwarf and the A-Z exit. Still unsolved are how to pass without a
trace and float like a feather. Am I correct in assuming that it really
isn't necessary to wish at all? It seems that by wishing you're forced
to lose one treasure."
   Well, I don't propose to answer any of those questions here, more to
give some ideas of how one constructs adventure puzzles. There is a
classic joke that seems appropriate here:

Q. How many adventure players does it take to change a lightbulb?
A. One to type BREAK BULB, another to try EAT BULB in the wrong room,
   another to try WAVE BULB...

The moral being that whatever you do and however obvious you think a
puzzle is, there will always be some contingency you don't allow for,
and someone who will try something you didn't think anyone would try.
   Adventures come in a variety of styles, with different aims and plots
(sometimes rather thin ones). A few typical 'player goals' are:

   Collect loot (COLOSSAL CAVE, ACHETON, MURDAC, PHILOSOPHER'S QUEST);
   Win back your kingdom (HAMIL);
   Impress someone enough that they will help you fight some adversary
      (FYLEET, CROBE);
   Show virtue enough to win the Holy Grail (SANGRAAL, QUEST FOR!);
   Escape from prison (XANDOS);
   Regain your sanity and then fulfil some mission (XENO);
   Kill a mighty wizard (PARC);
   Kill a giant (GIANTKILLER!);
   Get off a planet alive (COUNTDOWN TO DOOM);
   Get out of the world you're in (AVON);

and so on.
