Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk --------------------------- August 1991 ----------- Welcome to the August 91 issue of Archimedes World. The many programs in this issue are stimulating, very practical and highly original. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully. All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1991. They may not be copied or resold except for the purposes of making a backup copy. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. !Modes is public domain. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original. Archived The '!AWAug91' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWAug91' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying When the '!AWAug91' application icon is dragged to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software from the RAM disk it will need to be set to 1500k. Four megabytes of memory is required to comfortably run the software from there. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by selecting the 'Open viewer' items from the menu and dragging the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied across. They can then be loaded without using the disk menu. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our built-in text displayer module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs, read any instructions and open program directory viewers. Each item on the main menu leads to a sub-menu. Click the select button once over the icon to select a menu item. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu to reappear, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. Each sub-menu contains one or more programs. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they often provide vital information. When you select the 'Open viewer' option, a directory viewer will open up on the desktop. This allows you to run the programs by double-clicking or you can drag them to another directory viewer to copy them onto another disk. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu which is usually the main one. The Programs Tower Of Babel is the new arcade strategy game from Cygnus Software Engineering. The fully playable demo includes one tower for you to complete plus three training levels. Once you have mastered the demo you will no doubt be itching to play the full game. John Wigham is back with two powerful relocatable modules which allow you to incorporate Delta animations and Musix sound tracks in your own programs. Now you can create stunning looking demos without having to write complex programs. An example demo called !DinoDemo is supplied to show just how easy it is. ADFS Filer is an alternative to the usual ADFS desktop filer. It provides many new features which will make life much easier for floppy and hard disk users. FreeSpace complements the ADFS Filer by providing a nicely presented window showing the amount of free space left on the disk. It is presented both numerically and graphically for quick reference. Connect four is a simple game in which each player takes turns to drop coloured counters into a rack. The object is to beat your opponent by being first to connect a line of four counters in your colour. The game requires strategic and devious thinking. !Connect4 is a great desktop implementation of the game complete with digitised sound effects. Try to beat the Archimedes or a friend or even watch the computer play against itself. Font To Draw provides a link between the outline fonts and the objects which can be manipulated in !Draw. Although !Draw can handle text strings, it cannot do things such as rotate or shear them. With !Font>Draw you can turn a string written either vertically or horizontally and turn it into a Draw object file. You can choose any available font for the string. !Font>Draw requires the CLib 3.66 module which can be found in the !System application directory. Use the !SysMerge application to update your master !System application with the new module. Snail Invaders is a fascinating graphical demo from Bryan Creer (alias Bryan The Snail). Shells fall slowly down the screen as the colours change in hypnotic patterns. He has written his own unique graphical routines to create the animation frames. To produce the complex spiral shell shapes in the demo, he devised a special system of drawing multi-coloured circles. Each of the circles builds up part of the final spiral shell shape. Game Cheats are provided for all of the best Archimedes games. So if you have been finding some games simply too hard to master then try these cheats. BEWARE! Some of the cheats change the data on your game disks and so should be used only on backups. Archimedes World accepts no responsibility whatsoever for damage to game disks caused by the use of these cheats. TurtleGRFX is a program library providing a set of LOGO type graphic routines. They can be added to your own programs very easily. Four demonstrations show how easy the PROCedures are to incorporate in your own programs. Regular Features A new series explaining step-by-step how to program in the C language starts this issue. The cover disk contains an example C source program in the !Words application directory. Read the article in the magazine to find out how to compile the program and get it working. A useful fix is provided to improve the Coconizer song module maker tool. You can find a new version in the Eureka section on this disk. A utility for use with Easi Writer is supplied in the section of the same name. The second part of the Programming The ARM series on how to write Risc-OS applications is provided for you to examine. It is called !Two and can be found in the relevant section on this disk. To fill the spare space on this cover disk we have included a Public Domain program which is detailed in the Nearly Free article. The program is !Modes. It allows you to switch to multi-sync screen modes on a normal monitor. It is included on the disk as a free piece of software. As it is public domain you are free to copy the program as many times as you like and to give copies to whoever you choose. This only applies to the public domain software on this disk. Earn �800 From Your Program We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. We are interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens, animations, clip art sprite/!Draw files, music, sound samples, games, demos and anything else that is interesting and original. The only limit which we apply to software for the cover disk is that it has to be less than 300k in size. Public Domain If you are the author of a public domain program you will be interested to know that we are able to distribute your programs. By including your program on the cover disk you will reach an audience of thousands of Archimedes owners.
