25-12-87/T\GUIDE
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

VidiEditor (Software and documentation by T. E. Kennington.) V1.2 (C) T. E. Kennington 1987 1 Jan 1987 1 INTRODUCTION VidiEditor is a stand alone teletext editor and carousel display system. It is designed to run on the BBC model B microcomputer under OS1.2 and DFS or with a Master series computer with any filing system. It cannot be used with second processors. Nor, unfortunately, will it run on a standard BBC B with ADFS as there is insufficient memory. It is capable of storing upto 20 pages in memory (one magazine) using easy to use commands and of displaying them sequencially with a choice of two display times which may be set within the range 1 to 99 seconds. Links can be added to magazines to enable a "daisy chain" of magazines to be displayed. A magazine consists of 20 1kbyte pages and so a maximum of 4 magazines may be stored on one 100kbyte disc. In theory five magazines should be the maximum (5 x 20 = 100) but 2 sectors of the disc are reserved for the catalogue thus there is not quite sufficient room for 5 20kB magazines. An 800k system can provide room for 36 magazines which is 720 pages. (Maximum.) 2 Getting started Insert the VidiEditor disc in drive 0 and type "*VIDIED". The screen should then be displaying the title "VidiEditor" with a list of commands. The message "READY" appears and command mode is entered. If no title page appears and "<Not found" shows at the bottom of the screen, then the file "F_T" is not present on the disc. It will not affect the operation of VidiEd in any way if it is missing. The following commands are understood: CAROUSEL CLEAR CLM DISPLAY ERASE HELP INSERT LINK LOAD MAGAZINE OVERLAY REPLACE SAVE TIDY TIME X *<OS command> :<title> And on the ROM version : PRINT To enter the editor, press the cursor UP key. The screen will still be showing the header and the cursor will have moved up one line. Its position is shown at all times, in decimal, by the V-H indicator on the command line. The command line will also be showing "edit-normal < > &nn Vnn Hnn". The character shown between the angle brackets '< >' is the character under the cursor and its ASCII number, in hex, is shown after '&'. This is for use in identifying control codes and graphic characters. The top row of the screen is used for the page name which should be typed after the colon.(:) Anything typed on the keyboard appears on screen. The arrowed editing keys may be used to place the cursor in any desired position. In older versions the DELETE key produced the "blob" character. The current version deletes the character in front of the cursor. The "blob" is produced with SHIFT+DELETE. The screen will need to be "saved" to enable it to be recalled. The command - INSERT will place a copy of the screen in memory. Before this, however, it must have been given a 'name' to identify it. This should be typed on the top row, after the colon. Pressing ESCAPE now will return to command mode. It is also possible to 'name' the page at this point by typing the name after the command INSERT. e.g. INSERT TEST, will add TEST to the top row. The message "Action successful" will have appeared. Typing MAG will show the magazine title and the index, which will now include the page you have just inserted. To recall the page, simply type DISPLAY <name> which in the present case will be TEST. e.g. DISPLAY TEST [RETURN]. At this point, it may be worth mentioning that all but one of the commands may be shortened to its first letter. The exception is CLEAR which must be typed in full. Also, the name may consist of only as many characters as necessary to uniquely identify the page. Taking our example above, to display, the minimum command could be - D T . Commands may be written in upper or lower case, VidiEditor treats them the same. It will be necessary to save the pages you have created permanently on disc. This is done by saving the entire magazine under a 'title'. For instance, if we call our magazine "EXAMPLE" then typing: SAVE EXAMPLE [RET] will put it on the disc as a file called EXAMPLE. In the disc catalogue it will appear as D.EXAMPLE because all VidiEditor magazines are put in directory D. (DFS only. See Disc User Guide for details of directories). At some future time, the magazine EXAMPLE may be recalled by, first putting the disc containing the magazine in the disc drive, then typing: LOAD EXAMPLE [RET] Typing MAG next will show the contents of the magazine just loaded. Having now loaded the magazine, it is possible to display them in rotation in a CAROUSEL. By typing CAROUSEL on the command line, the command line will disappear and a "header row" appears on the top line. Unless the date and time have been set previously, there will be a blank space followed by the wrong time. These can both be set using the TIME command. Two display speeds are available and these may be set to anything between 1 and 99 seconds. See CAROUSEL for more details. You should now be able to "drive" VidiEditor in a limited form. The following section deals with each command in turn. 3 REFERENCE SECTION (Commands) 3.1 The EDITOR The screen editor is entered by pressing the cursor UP key. To exit the editor and return to the command line; press [ESCAPE]. On entering the editor, the command line shows; edit-normal < > &nn V23 H00 The cursor is at the bottom of the screen. Editing functions are listed below. They involve the cursor keys together with the SHIFT and CTRL keys. The cursor keys will be refered to as LEFT, RIGHT, UP and DOWN: 1) SHIFT+LEFT :delete character under cursor and move rest of line left. 2) SHIFT+RIGHT :move line to right from cursor, inserting a space under the cursor. 3) SHIFT+DOWN :move screen to the right and below cursor down one line. No part of the screen to the left of the cursor is changed. 4) SHIFT+UP :move screen to the right and below cursor up one line, deleting the remainder of the current line. 5) CTRL+RIGHT :delete to end of line. 6) CTRL+LEFT :delete from begining of line. 7) CTRL+DOWN :swap the remainder of this line with the part below it. 8) CTRL+UP :swap the remainder of this line with the part above it. To move whole lines, therefore, the cursor must be in the extreme left position. The cursor will not attempt to do anything silly. e.g. It is impossible to swap downwards if the cursor is on the bottom line. The red function keys carry colour and graphics control codes. These are in f1 to f7 inclusive as below: f1 f2 f3 f4 f5 f6 f7 RED GREEN YELLOW BLUE MAGENTA CYAN WHITE Single alpha colours are obtained by pressing SHIFT and a colour key together. Similarly, graphic colour codes are obtained by pressing CTRL and a colour key together. Other control codes are obtained from the normal keys in conjunction with the CTRL key as follows: keys function mnemonic CTRL+P Double height DH CTRL+L Normal height NH CTRL+C Clear screen - CTRL+H Flash Fl CTRL+I Steady St CTRL+J End box EB CTRL+K Start box SB CTRL+] New background NB CTRL+\ Black background BB CTRL+X Conceal display CD CTRL+Y Contiguous graphics Cg CTRL+Z Separated graphics Sg CTRL+^ Hold graphics Hg CTRL+_ Release graphics Rg Graphic characters are entered from the keyboard. All numeric keys, with and without SHIFT, and lower case alpha keys will produce graphic characters following a graphic control code. Alternatively, a "graphic patch" facility may be used. Function keys f8 and f9 are used with keys Q,W,A,S,Z and X. On pressing CTRL+f8 the command line shows; edit-graphic [] < > &nn Vnn Hnn The six keys Q to X may now be used to toggle the six bits of the graphic character on and off. The character may then be inserted on the screen by pressing CTRL+f9. No other keys respond exept the cursor keys. To return to normal, press CTRL+f8 again or ESCAPE. The function keys can be programmed to hold strings in the same way as in BASIC by using the *KEY command. However, f8 is preprogrammed with a control character which removes all control codes from the current page and replaces them with '@'. Using f8 again will restore the control codes. This is for use in finding 'rogue' codes that may be doing unexpected things. Although <start box> and <end box> can be used, the BBC computer is incapable of marking their presence and so the use of these codes is not recommended. 3.2 CAROUSEL CAROUSEL is the command for "display rolling pages". On entry, the command line is removed, the cursor switched off and the title row is replaced with a display header row containing the SERVICE NAME, DAY/DATE and TIME. Each page held in the magazine is displayed, in order, for thirty seconds or ten seconds depending on the type of page identifier used. The page identifier is a colon (:) or star (*) that appears in the top left of every page in the magazine. The colon is the default character and causes a display time of 30 seconds to be set. A star inserted in this position causes a display time of 10 seconds to be set. These times are refered to as "slow" and "fast" but both may be set to any value in the range 1 to 99. To change the normal (ie. "slow") time of 30 seconds to, say, 20 seconds, a command of the form:- CAR slow=20 [RET] is used. Similarly, to change the "fast" time (as prompted by an asterisk), to, say, 15 seconds, the command:- CAR fast=15 [RET] should be used. The display may be advanced to the next page in the sequence at any time by pressing the cursor right key. Pressing cursor left gives you the previous page unless you are on the first page of a magazine. The display can also be held static on the current page by pressing the space-bar. The time in the top left hand corner of the screen is then replaced with the word "HOLD" in green, exactly as on teletext receivers. To return to normal, press any key. The display will immediately advance to the next page. [ESCAPE] returns to command mode. When displaying, any "holes" (i.e. erased pages) are skipped over. After the last page has been displayed, the pointer is reset to the first page and the cycle continues. If a link is present in the magazine, then the carousel automaticaly loads the next magazine and continues to carousel. In a linked chain, the last magazine should always link back to the first to maintain continuity. (See LINK). If there is no magazine present, then a beep is made and the error message "NO MAGAZINE" flashes on the command line. No attempt is made to display. Changing the SERVICE name The service name is the first word on the header row in CAROUSEL. The default value is "VidiFax" in yellow. This may easily be changed at any time by the command:- CAR = <new name> [RET] The new name follows the equals sign. Thereafter, your new name will be used instead of "VidiFax". A colour code may be inserted before the name if required. It will remain in use even if VidiEditor is terminated and subsequently recalled. The default name will only reappear after the machine has been switch off and on again. Changing the magazine title The title of the current magazine is stored and displayed when MAG is called. The title is derived from LOAD or SAVE commands or by the LINK mechanism. It may be changed at any time by the command:- :<new title> [RET] The title of the current magazine, whether it has been changed or not, will be over-written by the new magazine title if the LINK option has been set. See the command LINK. As a further option, the header row can be completely blank. The command: CAR Hoff [RET] will turn the header row off and enter the carousel. It will stay off for all subsequent calls to the carousel. To resore the header, use; CAR On [RET] The header will remain on for all subsequent calls to the carousel. 3.3 CLEAR Clears an entire magazine from the index enabling a new magazine to be created. This command should be used with care because of the way it works. It does not actually remove the magazine from the memory but instead modifies the page identifier (the colon). Thus until further insert operations, the pages of the magazine still exist and may be recalled by name or the whole magazine may be restored by repeating the command. It can be seen therefore that CLEAR has a toggling action on the page identifier. Its use is in removing a magazine after it has been completely filled and saved and the user wishes to continue creating more pages. 3.4 CLM Similar to clear except that the magazine memory is entirely cleared. It is not possible to recover from this condition. 3.5 DISPLAY <name> Calls a page from the magazine (not disc) and displays it on screen. The name is the name of the page as it appears in the magazine index. A space MUST follow the command in order that the system knows where the next word (the name) begins. The name does not need to be given in full; only the number of characters to uniquely identify the page. If the page cannot be found, the error message "No such page" is given. Alternatively, a page may be displayed by refering to its number as read from the magazine index. Although the numbers are not given as such, they are numbered from 1 to 20. The page number must be enclosed in parentheses. e.g. To display the eleventh page in the magazine, the command: DISPLAY (11) [RET] is used. This command is used for displaying pages that may have been inserted without a name. To display a page that has just been erased, (perhaps by accident) then use # (hash) for the name. To display a temporary page, created by * or SAVE commands then use / (oblique) in place of a name. 3.6 ERASE <name> or <name1:name2> Removes one or more pages from the magazine. The page identifier is removed and the first character of the name is changed to # (hash). The next INSERT operation will over- write this page. Until then, this page may still be displayed by using #. e.g. D # . Pages may also be erased by numerical referance. e.g. ERASE (12). (See DISPLAY above.) A space MUST follow the command. To remove a block of pages, specify the first and last pages of the block, separated by a colon. If the page(s) cannot be found, the error message: "No such page" is given. 3.7 HELP (ROM only) Calls up the help frame that is shown when VidiEditor is started up. The current frame is saved and is recalled after pressing the space bar. 3.8 INSERT <name> Stores the page currently on screen in the magazine. On a successful transfer, the message "Action successful" is given. The page must be given a name by which it can be found again. It can be added to the top row whilst in the editor or it can be given on the command line. e.g.: INSERT TEST PAGE [RET] This will add "TEST PAGE" to the top row before inserting it in the magazine. Note that it will over-write anything already there. A colon is always put at the start of the top row to act as the page identifier. This is essential in order that the system knows where to put the next page to be inserted. The pages are stored sequencially until the magazine is full. If all 20 pages are occupied, then the error message "Magazine full" is given if an attempt to INSERT was made. 3.9 LINK <title> In VidiEditor, one magazine of 20 pages can be held in the memory. This may not be sufficient room for the users needs. However, the command LINK can be used to "chain" another magazine, previously stored, onto the carousel. It takes the form:- LINK <magazineTitle> The magazine title can be any file specification including long path names on ADFS. After the link command has been used, it will be necessary to SAVE the magazine so that the link is also saved. LINK on its own removes a link but again, this only affects the current magazine. Any number of magazines may be chained, subject only to the storage capacity of the system. eg. On a single 40 track drive, 4 magazines or 80 pages can be stored, whereas on a twin double sided 80 track drive, 36 magazines or 720 pages may be stored. Even more can be saved on a 10 Megabyte winchester disc! If a link is present, it is shown in the MAGazine index. 3.10 LOAD <title> Loads the specified magazine into memory. Magazines are normally 20k bytes long and will over-write the present memory contents. If used on its own, it will prompt for a title. If the specified magazine cannot be found on the disc, then the disc error message "Not found" will be given. 3.11 MAGAZINE Produces the index of the current magazine in insertion order. The whole of the top row of each page is shown, allowing comments added after the page name to be shown also. If the external PRINT routine has been used then "ptr=<printer>" will be shown, top left in red. <printer> depends on whether a printer programmer has been used or not. If a link is present, this will also be shown, on the bottom line. It will typically look like: Link := NEXTMAG 3.12 OVERLAY <name> Copies the specified page over the current one. Where ever there is a space in the foreground page (the one being overlayed) the background will remain unchanged. The page name remains that of the background. This does not affect the magazine; the page should be treated as if it has just been edited. If the specified page cannot be found, the error message "No such name" will be given. 3.13 PRINT <name1>:<name2> (ROM or separate disc image) (On a Master with disc image, use /PRINT) Prints out the pages <name1> to <name2> inclusive on an 80 column printer such as the Epson RX80. If only the first name is given, then just that page is printed. To print the current screen contents, the qualifier "/S" can be used. e.g. print /S All graphics are replaced with ***. Pages are printed 4 to a sheet on standard 66 line (11 inch) fanfold sheets. If the utility "VPP" (system disc) has been used to program an FX80 or similar printer then graphics can be reproduced and six pages per sheet are printed. NB.: Double height and separated graphics cannot be reproduced. 3.14 REPLACE <name> Finds the specified page, erases it and inserts the current page in the magazine. Note that on insersion, the page will be deposited in the first available space which may not necessarily be the same as the erased page. If the name is left out of the command, the name currently on the top row will be used, UPTO THE FIRST SPACE ONLY. If there is more than one page that begins with the same word, therefore, it is wise always to specify the full name in the command. If the specified page cannot be found, the error message "No such name" will be given. No further attempt to insert the page will be made. If the page was found, then the original page will have been overwritten by the current one and the message "Action successful" will be given. 3.15 SAVE <title> Saves a magazine of twenty pages (including blanks) to the disc. The title will be the file name and it will be in the disc catalogue under directory D if DFS is in use or the current directory with any other filing system. If the title is NOT specified, then the current title as shown in the magazine index is used. A prompt will appear if there is no current title. If there is insufficient room on the disc to hold a 20k file (one magazine), the disc error message "Disc full" will be given. A 40 track disc can hold upto 4 magazines per side whilst an 80 track disc can hold upto 9 per side. 3.16 TIDY When pages have been removed from the magazine, the "holes" left can be removed by this command which moves all the free space to the end of the magazine. 3.17 TIME TIME is used to set both the internal clock (as in BASIC) and also the "day/date" string which appears on the header row when using CAROUSEL. On entry, the screen clears and the current time and day/date, if any, are shown. You are then asked if you wish to change the time: Change time? (Y/N): Answering with "Y" will present separate headers for hours, minutes and seconds. [RETURN] must be pressed to enter each value. A null value, i.e. [RETURN] on its own, is considered to be zero. After the seconds have been entered or "N" was the answer to the question then: Change date? (Y/N): appears. Answering with "Y" causes: Enter day/date > < to appear. Anything typed between the angle brackets will appear on the header row in CAROUSEL. The normal format, as used by CEEFAX and ORACLE, is of the form: DAY DATE MONTH e.g.>Sun 19 Aug< Anything typed beyond the second angle bracket is ignored. After pressing [RETURN] or the question was answered with "N" the screen reverts to whatever was on it before TIME was called and the cursor returns to the command line. 3.18 X This works in the same way as <f8> in the editor. Since it is not possible to see control codes on the BBC computer, this command may be used to mark them. The cursor may then be placed over the same area when the page is recalled and the ASCII number, in HEX, may be read from the command line, after the "&" symbol. "X" works by scanning the screen and replacing all control codes with @. The original page can be recovered by the command: Display /temp 3.19 *<operating system command> This is exactly the same as star commands in BASIC. Everthing after * is passed to the operating system. Before this happens, the screen is stored in the temporary memory and the screen is cleared for use by the operating system if necessary. One of the most common commands, for instance is *CAT to see the disc catalog. All error messages from the MOS and filing systems are reported and control is always handed back to VidiEditor.
