!Manual/Data/Chapter5
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Chapter 5 Preferences This chapter describes the various options available to adapt Optical to the user's own particular use, by using the Preferences window. To view this, select Preferences... from the Icon bar menu. 5.1 Processing options 5.1.1 Auto scan With Auto scan selected, the direct scan window pops up for the scanning of a new page each time Optical is loaded and when it finishes OCRing a page. More can be found about scanning an image in Chapter 4.3 - Direct scanning . 5.1.2 Auto find columns If this is selected then Optical will attempt to locate columns of text on a page automatically. Clicking on the button to the right of this option opens another window. The Horizontal gaps value determines the minimum gap size that Optical looks for to separate the top of one column from the bottom of one above. If this is too small then individual lines of text may be found as columns. If too large, then columns may get joined together. The Vertical gaps value has the same function as the above, except that it works with adjacent columns. 5.1.3 Preview / process With this option selected, the image scanned or loaded into Optical is displayed before it is read. It is then also possible to process the image. More can be found about this feature in Chapter 6 - Processing an image . 5.1.4 Format text Details about the Text formatter can be found in Chapter 8.3 - Formatting the OCRed text . 5.1.5 Read out after This feature is not functional with the demonstration version... With this option selected, text is read out loud after it has been OCRed, providing a compatible speech synthesizer is installed. The speech synthesizer is selected by clicking on the button to the right of this option, and selecting one of the available options. Currently, the following are supported: ARCticulate from The Fourth Dimension Speech! from Superior Software SpeechSystem from PEP Associates Note It is not possible to select a different speech synthesizer while talking is in progress. More details about this can be found in Chapter 7.1.11 - Read out... . 5.2 General preferences 5.2.1 Auto-load lexicon With this option selected, the selected lexicon is automatically loaded when Optical is loaded. For more details on spelling checking, see Chapter 8.1 - The Spelling Checker . 5.2.2 Keep previous frames With this selected, previously marked text columns are not cleared when new images are scanned into Optical. For more details on marking columns see Chapter 6.4.1 - Marking a column of text . 5.2.3 Multi-task If this is selected, it is possible to perform other operations on the computer while Optical is reading or spelling checking. 5.2.4 Read ahead in TT If selected then when Optical is in type teaching mode (see Chapter 9.2.2 - Type teaching ) the entire scanned text is continually re-ocred as the user types in corrections. 5.2.5 Use TWAIN If selected, then direct scanning is performed using one of David Pilling 's TWAIN drivers. (see Chapter 4.3.1 - TWAIN for more details.) 5.3 Other reading options 5.3.1 Character size The minimum (min ) and the maximum (max ) character sizes mark the limits on the size of a marking which Optical will detect on a page. As Optical will not detect anything below the minimum character size (specified in pixels - the small dots which make up an image), it is useful for filtering out background noise - small spurious black dots from dust on the paper, or the scanner window etc. By altering the maximum character size, it is possible to filter out large objects on a page which are not text (such as some graphics, and vertical or horizontal lines.) Note that large characters (from headings etc.) may also be ignored. 5.3.2 Accuracy / speed The slider bar in this area can be adjusted to control the speed at which Optical reads, against the accuracy. The more green (Speed ) in the slider, the faster the read. The more red (Accuracy ), the slower the read, but the more accurate. A reference number from one to four is also displayed to the left of this. If the Check spelling option is selected then OCRed text is automatically checked for spelling mistakes after it has been read. If correct is also selected then Optical intelligently guesses what a mistake should be, and replaces it. This increases the accuracy of the output, but slows things down. If correct is not selected then words which are not recognised are highlighted in orange. More details about the Spelling checker can be found in Chapter 8.1 - The Spelling Checker . Next to Cope with are two options: If lines is selected, then Optical will search through lines such as those in tables, and detect the text inside. Otherwise the text is ignored. If 'scripts is selected then Optical will attempt to pick up superscript and subscript changes, which can be saved in RTF and DDF files. Narrow columns (tables etc.) should be selected if narrow columns of text (one or two characters across) are not detected properly. This will not work with normal lines of text. 5.4 Other buttons Pressing MLE... allows you to alter which applications use Menu Linked Embedding . For more details see Chapter 4.4 - Menu Linked Embedding (MLE) . Save saves all settings to disc, so that they do not have to be re-selected each time Optical is loaded. As well as the ones from the Preferences window, it also saves options such as how text is displayed in the OCRed text window, and whether new text should be appended. Cancel puts any changed options back to what they were originally when the Preferences window was opened. OK accepts any changes and closes the window.
