Biology/bio9

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

1 SENSES AND NERVES
Nervous system has 5 stages: sense
organ, sensory neurone, C.N.S., motor
neurone, muscle.

There are 5 senses: SIGHT, HEARING,
SMELL/TASTE, TOUCH/TEMPERATURE, and
MOVEMENT/BALANCE.

SIGHT/VISION

Mammal eye
focuses light by
Cornea (C) and
Lens (L) onto the
Retina (R) where
sensitive Rod and
Cone cells send
impulses to the
brain via the
Optic Nerve (ON).

C
SMELL AND TASTE
Smell and Taste are
both types of chemical
sense.

The tongue has a
number of receptors in
different areas,
sensitive to acidity,
bitterness and
sweetness, with most
of the surface
sensitive to salt.

MAMMALIAN EAR

Outer ear: traps
and directs sound
to vibrate
ear-drum.
Middle ear: bones
amplify sound.
Inner ear:
movement of fluid
in cochlea
triggers
sensitive hairs
nerve impulse.

2 MOVEMENT AND BALANCE
Muscles and tendons contain stretch

receptors which give the brain

information on position.

The inner ear contains semi-circular

canals for balance. Moving is

coordinated by the cerebellum.

3 HORMONES
Hormones are chemical 'messengers'

which are carried in the blood. They

are made in the endocrine glands and

act on specific 'target' organs.

Hormones are a relatively slow-acting

and long-term means of control.

OTHER ORGANISMS

Insects have a number of hormones.

One keeps the young features of

larvae, one causes moulting.

Plants produce their own hormones such

as auxin which regulates growth.

5 REPRODUCTIVE HORMONES

The menstrual cycle is controlled by

hormones: see graph.

TESTOSTERONE affects male

characteristics.

PROLACTIN and OXYTOCIN

control milk

production.

6 TEMPERATURE REGULATION
Birds and mammals can control their
body temperature. Other animals are
affected by the environment.

Control = warm-blooded = homeothermic.
Less control = cold-blooded =
poikilothermic.

The graph shows why
'cold-blooded' is
an inaccurate term.

A reptile will be
as cold - or hot -
as its environment.

A mammal's body
temperature remains
more or less
steady, at about
37 C.

#
7 A HOT MAMMAL
1) May sweat: the heat needed for the

evaporation of sweat comes from the

   body.

2) Increases blood flow to the skin.

This causes flushing. More heat is

then lost from blood vessels near

   the surface as vasodilation occurs.

3) Lowers hair.
#
8 A COLD MAMMAL
1) Generates heat by muscular action,

   both voluntary and involuntary

   (shivering).

2) Reduces blood flow to the skin.

3) Raises hairs to trap a layer of

   warm air.

4) Relies on fat under the skin to act

   as an insulator.
