SibDemo/Read?Me/Reviews/Telegraph
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

The Daily Telegraph (London) Tuesday 20 June 1995 MODERN MAESTROS WHO WRITE IN DOUBLE TIME If the first performance of Kol Simcha by the London Musici chamber orchestra on July 12 seems particularly fine, composer Adam Gorb will thank the Sibelius 7 computer program for creating the extra rehearsal time. Gorb is putting the finishing touches to the score, with a computer screen packed with musical notes perched alongside the piano in his south London home. He says the Sibelius 7 software will allow him to complete the piece a month earlier than he would otherwise. Sibelius 7 was designed by twin brothers Ben and Jonathan Finn to speed the creation of a piece of music. It is used on an Acorn computer, which they chose because of the speed at which it runs graphics programs. A mouse allows the user to click through a series of windows to set up a piece of music paper on the screen, on to which any combination of notes can be added. The program produces a high-quality print-out and can even play back the melody. In the past, producing a score meant writing out by hand a version for the conductor and each player. "That was the boring bit which this computer does for you," Gorb says. He is impressed by how easy Sibelius 7 is to use. "I tried other music programs but they seemed to require great computer literacy and a lot of time - who has three months to learn a program?" Another fan of the Sibelius 7 software is John McCabe, who has abandoned pen and paper to write Edward II for Stuttgart Ballet. "It takes the drudgery out of some aspects of writing music - for instance, drawing bar lines, or counting rests and bars, which is a real pain in the neck." McCabe composes directly on to the computer, and does not think this impedes creativity: "It might make it quicker and easier to produce the music, but thankfully I still have to have the ideas." Augmentation of the features will continue, although the basic range has been completed, says Ben Finn. He is particularly keen to promote the use of Sibelius 7 with good-quality sound equipment. Adam Gorb first heard his composition played not by an orchestra but by Jonathan Finn's computer, with the program linked to an elaborate sound system. "In some cases, it fools people and they think it is live performance," says Ben Finn. The only criticism levelled at the Sibelius 7 system is that it requires an Acorn computer. Now that a card will run PC programs on the Acorn, this should be less of a problem, although owners of other hardware will still be unable to use the program. But for Gorb, the program has many advantages, among them clearer music sheets. "No longer will I have a trombone player asking me at rehearsal if I have written a G sharp minim or an F sharp crotchet, instead of trying the music out." Bob Ward
