Graphics/!Translatr/Docs/Summary

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Summary
-------

The following is a short summary of the most important things that you can
do with Translator 6.00.

- Images may be converted automatically to the ideal mode and palette
- Images may be converted to ANY mode and ANY palette of your choice, with
  error spreading preserving maximum quality
- Images may be (pre-)scaled down using any scaling ratio for both X and Y,
again with error spreading preserving maximum quality
- Images may be converted to black and white images
- Images may be colour separated (using the RGB resolution settings)
- Images' colours may be 'inverted'
- Images may be saved, (post-)scaled down to any size, as sprite files and/or
as Clear files. Clear files preserve all image information and can be very
easily handled by simple programs for further processing. Clear files may in
turn be converted to GIF and TIFF files using !MakeGIF and !MakeTIFF.
- Once an image is loaded, it may be displayed in any other mode (though
for maximum quality, a non-ideal output mode should be chosen prior to
  loading with 'Output mode')

A few special examples :

- Creation of icons from images : choose 'Output mode' = 'Current', select
mode 12, ensure the desktop palette is the current palette, choose
'Output palette' = 'Current', set error spreading to 'on' (if you want
maximum quality), set the appropiate scaling factors (for 34x17 pixel
icons and an input image of, say 123x456, choose 34:123 for X and
17:456 for Y), load the image, save the image using 'Whole'.

- Creation of GIF or TIFF files from any input image : choose output to a
Clear file using 'Clear output' and dragging the file icon in the subwindow
to a filer window, set any pre-scaling if you want to scale down the image,
ignore all other settings (they have no effect), load the image, drag the
Clear file to !MakeGIF or !MakeTIFF to create the GIF or TIFF image.
