This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Load !Killer by double clicking its icon. After a short time a window
will appear confirming which version of !Killer it is, and how many
viruses it can handle. This window will disappear of its own accord
after a few seconds.

*** IMPORTANT ***

Always use the most recent version of this software to ensure that you
have the greatest level of protection available!

All versions of !Killer are designed to stop working on a certain
date. A new version will always be ready before that time, so
in practice this will seldom be an inconvenience.

!Killer's icon will then appear on the right of the icon bar, with 'Ready'
beneath it. If this does not happen, and you get the message 'Internal
integrity check failed' instead, stop using that copy of !Killer. If
you have an original copy on another floppy disc write-protect the
disc and use it to check the modified copy of !Killer.

!Killer will check whether any viruses are already loaded, and either remove
them, or render them impotent in the case of ones which cannot easily be
removed from memory. Error boxes are used to report any viruses discovered. 

You will also get a warning from !Killer if it finds that VProtect is not
loaded (or indeed if it was loaded, and is removed).

As supplied, !Killer is set up to scan adfs::0 by default. This is easily
alterable, and is covered shortly. However, to avoid making this too verbose
these instructions assume initially that none of the options have been
altered.

A scan may be started in several ways:

a) By clicking MENU on the icon, and then SELECT on 'Scan'.

b) By clicking SELECT on the icon.

c) By dragging a directory/application to the icon.

d) By clicking on any filing system icon (this facility is off by default).

e) In response to an attempt to load a virus - !Killer will offer to scan
the source of the attempted infection (this facility is off by default).

f) By pressing SHIFT/CTRL/TAB with the mouse pointer in a filer window.

g) By pressing ALT/ALT/Action with the mouse pointer in a filer
window.

h) By another WIMP task sending a message to !Killer                       

i) By double clicking on a directory or application (this facility is off by
default)

j) By typing in the path to scan in the Scan Path submenu

k) By passing parameters to !Killer as it is loaded

l) By using the BootScript facility when !Killer is loaded

(Note that some applications may suppress the hot key sequences when
they have the input focus)

Before the scan begins you will be asked 'Do you want to scan...' followed
by the path. If the path is very long, it will not all be shown. Click OK to
start the scan, or Cancel to abort the scan. During this the word below the
icon bar icon will change to 'Waiting'.

When you click on 'OK' the window will disappear, and a new window entitled
'Pineapple Virus Killer' will appear. Most of the time this will act
as a progress window showing which file is currently being checked
(the text below the icon bar icon will say 'Looking'). There are two
boxes in the window, Abort and Pause. Abort stops the run, and Pause
suspends the run until Continue is clicked.

If an infection is found an error box will be displayed to draw your
attention to it. If the progress window is at the back of the desktop you
may bring it to the front by clicking SELECT on the icon bar icon. A message
in red, of the form 'MyMOD virus loaded by....' will indicate the nature of
the problem. Three options are offered, Abort, Remove and Skip. Abort
terminates the scan at that point. Skip ignores the problem and continues
the scan. Remove will cure the problem, either by deleting the file, or by
removing the offending line from a !Boot file. The text below the icon bar
icon will change to 'Virus' when an infection is found, or '!Boot' when a
!Boot file which loads a virus is found.

At the end of the scan an error box saying 'Scan of ... completed' will be
displayed - this is provided so that you can know a scan has finished even
it you had put another window on top of the progress display. The text below
the icon bar icon will say 'Scanned' at this point.

The progress window will say how many objects were checked, and how many
infections were found. When you have seen this, click OK. !Killer will now
attempt to send it's log file to an editor (such as !Edit). The log file not
only details infections, but also takes a very critical look at the contents
of !Boot files, reporting anything it thinks could possibly be used for
suspicious activities. When reporting an infection it also includes the time
and date stamp of the file, which in some cases can be useful for tracing
back the spread of an infection to the original source.

A little practice soon makes log files simple, and you may like to keep them
to allow comparison with files in the future. By default log files are saved
in the Logs directory within !KillerLog.

The behaviour of !Killer is controlled by an Options file, and by various
menu options. A facility is provided to allow you to save the current
options and customise !Killer's operation to suit it's environment.

In the rough caricatures that follow, a / to the left of a menu entry shows
that it may be ticked depending upon circumstances, and a > to the right
shows that it leads to a submenu.

The box is split into functional groups.

Scanning
--------

Disinfect : Whether to remove infections (if confirm is on as well you will
be prompted whether to remove each infections as it is found).

Confirm : Whether to seek user confirmation before beginning a scan, or
removing an infection. Also brings up an error box to inform you when
a scan has completed.

Faster : Whether to hog the multi-tasking, making the scan faster, but
others applications slower.

Notify : Whether to notify the user when a virus is found.

Capture : Whether to copy samples of viruses found into a directory called
Captured.<VirusName> within the Log directory. 

Use ARCFS to scan archives : Whether to scan archives (using ARCFS) during a
scan of another filesystem. Requires ARCFS 0.44 or above. If ARCFSr/w is
used, viruses may also be removed from archives.

Dismount floppy after scan : Whether to dismount a floppy disc after
scanning (nb - this will be overriden if the scan is taking place
before an operation which needs the disc to be mounted ie Double click
on a dir/app or as a result of an icon bar click).

These options can be altered whilst scanning either by clicking Adjust on the
Icon bar icon, Select on 'Options...' in the icon bar menu, or Menu on the
action window shown during scanning.


Automatic Scanning
------------------
          
As well as being able to start scans manually, there are a number of ways to
make !Killer automatically scan for you.

When !Killer is first loaded : Turn this on if you want !Killer to begin a
scan when it is first loaded.

When an infection is found : If a known virus appears in memory, !Killer
will scan the application most likely to have loaded it.

On an iconbar click : A scan will begin whenever you click on a disc or
fileserver icon.

Intelligent : Allows some exceptions to the above, but floppy discs will
always be scanned.

On a dir/app double click : This allows directories and applications to be
checked as they are accessed and used.

Open directory/run application if scan is aborted/cancelled: This option
affects the iconbar click and double click scans. When it is turned on the
attempted action (opening a viewer, running an application etc) will only
take place if the scan completes. When this option is turned off, aborting
or cancelling a scan will still perform the action which caused the scan to
begin.


Log-File
--------

The settings for the log file may not be altered whilst a scan in in
progress.   

'On' turns log file generation on/off.

'Keep' prevents the log file from being deleted after it has been loaded or
mailed electronically.

'Load' causes the log file to be sent to the resident text editor (!Edit for
example). If the text editor cannot be found the text will be scrolled on
the screen in a window.

'EMail' turns on the facility where a copy of the log file is sent via
electronic mail. This facility does not work with !MailMan, and therefore
should not be used outside Acorn. The writable field is used to specify the
address for the mail/

'Path' specifies where log files are kept. This is normally in the logs
directory within !killer. However you may wish to change it if a) you want
to write protect the floppy, or b) you want to use a faster media. To change
the path click SELECT within the icon, type in the new path, and press
RETURN. Should the error 'Not a directory' be produced the original path
will be put back in the icon, and you should check and then re-enter the
path you wanted to use.                        

'Path' also specifies where 'captured' files will be put. If the facility is
turned on, any virus files will be copied to directory Captured.<VirusName>
within the log directory. 

The normal setting for 'Path' is <Killer$LogDir>, which is set by the
!KillerLog application directory - allowing logs to put in a different
place to the !Killer application. This allows !Killer to be run from a
write-protected media successfully.

'Infections' whether to record infections in the log file.

'Warnings' whether to record warnings in the log file.

'Beware' whether to include beware messages in the log file.

'Action' whether to include actions in the log file.


Save Settings
-------------

Click on this icon to save the current settings. The current FS and Device
are also saved, and become the default FS and Device when !killer is next
loaded. By turning on the 'When !Killer is first loaded' automatic scanning
option !killer will scan that FS and Device as soon as it is loaded.

In order to facilitate running !Killer from a read-only environment
both the Options and Totals files will be saved within !KillerLog if
possible.

Hide Options
------------

This facility allows !Killer to be set and left running, with the
possibility of alteration of the settings minimised. While it is turned on
clicking MENU brings up a reduced menu consisting only of Info, Scan and
Quit. The full menu may be produced by CTRL-MENU. The options dialogue box
may be accessed directly by CTRL-ADJUST on the icon bar icon.

                                                     
The Virus Information Window
----------------------------

This window gives information about either all viruses known to this
version to !Killer, or just those which have been found on this
system. Two display modes are available, giving different amounts of
information.

(This window can also be brought up from the icon bar by using
SHIFT-Adjust.)

Clicking MENU within this window produces the menu show below:

In the large icons mode the possible width of the window will adjust
to the current screen mode. As the window is resized the icons in the
window will be dynamically rearranged in the same manner as a Filer
window.

In the full info mode the display only contains one virus on each
line. In addition to the information shown in large icons mode, there
are also two lines of text giving brief information about the virus.

The Found only option restricts the display to those viruses which
have been encountered on this system. Initially this may result in an
empty window.

The Reset Found facility allows you to reset !Killer's memory of the
viruses which it has encountered.

When a virus has been found the word 'Found' will be displayed,
together with a count of the number of occurences found so far. These
totals are saved to disc when you Quit !Killer and will be reloaded
the next time you use. Use the 'Reset Found' facility to zero the
totals.


Using !Killer with compressed filesystems
-----------------------------------------

!Killer is able to handle compressed files in two formats:

a) By Computer Concepts' Compression. CFS will show up as a filesystem -
simply select the device to scan as usual.

b) By Mark Smith's ARCFS utility, which allows Spark-style archives to be
handled in situ.

Support for further compressed filesystems will be added in future
versions.

                                              
Interpreting the Log file
-------------------------

The log files which !Killer generates are deliberately verbose, to allow the
maximum information to be gained about an infection.
                                               
When scanning a large media, log files can get quite large, so it is
possible to suppress any of the categories below.

Information is written to the log file as the scan progresses, and is
subdivided into several levels of information. These are (in
decreasing order of importance):


Infection - a virus has been found. The timestamp of the file is included,
since this is often an indication of the time at which the infection
occurred.

Warning - something which does not match a known virus, but could be an
indication of an unknown virus.

Beware - something which could well be used in a virus unknown to !Killer.
The routine which flags these takes a paranoid view of the world, so a
number of genuine lines will undoubtably appear in most scans. Any
compressed files will also generate a warning, since they cannot be
checked without the co-operation (in the case of ARCFS and
Compression) of the program which produced them.

Action - something which !Killer has done (eg renaming a file to re-instate
a !boot file)


At the end or termination of the scan a summary will be written giving
the numbers of viruses found together with warnings about files which
could not be checked, files which could not be disinfected, and
possible new strains of known viruses.
             
Setting up !Killer to run automatically
---------------------------------------

It is possible to configure !Killer so that it will scan a device as
soon as it is loaded. However a more versatile method has now been
added.

Three commands and parameters can be passed to !Killer as it loads.

Since !Killer's own !Run file may *not* be modified, it is necessary
to build a new Obey file, which would contain something like:
  
  run <killer$dir> -scan adfs::0 -quit
  
-scan <device> tells !Killer to scan the given device. Only one -scan
is allowed - for more versatility see -file below.

-quit tells !Killer to quit at the end of the next scan, so by using
these two parameters together !Killer will load, scan, and then quit.

Alternatively, the -file command can be used instead, thus:

  run <killer$dir> -file <file2$dir>.scanlist

If you are using a file, it is much easier to set the file to the
filetype for Killer control files (&DA0, VPScript), and you can then
run the file directly, double click on it, or drag it to the iconbar
to run it (if !Killer is already loaded) without needing to use the
two file procedure explained above.

The control file contains a list of scan commands, with an optional
quit command at the end of the file. For example:

  scan scsi::4.dloads.unchecked
  quit
  
This file would instruct !Killer to scan each of three listed devices
sequentially, and then to quit.

In addition, there is a wait command which will display a window and
wait for the user to click OK to proceed or Quit to exit. This can be
used to pause during disc changes, eg

  scan adfs::0
  quit

Obviously, it is best to ensure that the options are set up so that a
log file is created and kept so that you can know what has happened.

For more advanced usage, the first file can be run as a task alarm
from !Alarm - allowing automatic unattended scanning to take place of
one or more devices.

There are also a number of other commands available in the control
language:
  
  os <string>
  
Pass <string> direct to the OS for execution, eg 'os net:logon
filerserver syst daccx'. Obviously, if it is necessary to incorporate
sensitive information such as passwords, control files should be kept
safe and away from any chance of a security breach!

  wimp <string>
  
Pass <string> direct to the WIMP for execution, eg 'wimp
adfs::harddisc.apps1.!edit' would load !edit. Note that for the
script to continue executing the application started in this manner
must begin multi-tasking itself, or exit in the case of a non-multi
tasking operation. When loading applications, you may find it
necessary to ensure that !system, !scrap and !fonts have also been
located - thus a useful safety measure in any control file which uses
the wimp command would be:
  os adfs::disc.$.!system.!boot
  os adfs::disc.$.!scrap.!boot
  os adfs::disc.$.!fonts.!boot
  
  scan_opt <options>
  
This allows you to alter the scanning options from within the control
file. Any options you include are turned on, any others are turned
off. Each option must be preceded with a dash, eg 'scan_opt -faster
-arcfs -dismount'. By implication the -disinfect, -confirm, -notify
and -capture options are turned off in this example. The full list of
available options is:
          
  -arcfs

The two options marked with a * should not be turned on unless you are
going to be there to provide mouse clicks to continue the execution of
the control file!

Similar control over the log file options is provided by:
  
  log_opt <options>
  
This can be used in the same manner as above, with the following range
of options:
  
  -logfile (#)
  -load
  -keep
  -mail
  -infections
  -warnings
  -beware
  -actions
  
Always remember to include -logfile if you want a log file produced!

If these commands are not used the normal option settings remain in
effect.      

The facility has also been provided to have a default script file
which will be executed whenever !Killer has not been started by
another script file. The filename for this file is 'BootScript' and it
should be located within the !KillerLog directory. As shipped, a
BootScript file is provided which actually does nothing.

About !Killer
-------------

!Killer has been compiled using the Oak Solutions ABC Basic Compiler,
and therefore needs ABCLib (4.02 or greater) to run. Unlike earlier
versions, it does not need FPEmulator to run. A suitable copy of
ABCLib is held inside the !Killer directory.

----------------------------

Template and message files are provided for !Killer to be used in the
German Language. From Killer 1.605 onwards, country detection should
happen automatically.

It is almost certain that there are, or will be, viruses which !killer does
not know about. To assist in the development of !killer please send a
clearly marked sample of any virus you discover to Pineapple Software or
Acorn's Customer Services department. In cases where the virus infects a
file, or an application, please include an example.
