StarInfo/Hampton/!NetReact/!Help

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

                               Robert Hampton

Many moons ago, *INFO carried a game called Reaction. It was quite a fun game
and people played it, and enjoyed it.

Then, in January 1998, Justin Fletcher's NetGame library appeared. The aim of
it was clear: to make networked games simple to write. I'm quite a simple
person, so this idea appealed to me. NetReact is the result.

I've used the original sprites, but used a 16-colour optimised palette. This
has no noticeable effect, except that the file is much smaller.

System Requirements
-------------------
You'll need a RISC OS 3.1 machine with a network connection. You will also
need Justin Fletcher's NetGame library from the January 1998 Acorn User disc
or from his web site at http://gerph.home.ml.org/

I haven't been able to test it on anything other than a StrongARM RiscPC at
the moment, as my other RISC OS machine, an ageing A3010, doesn't have an
Internet stack installed (It *does* have to run from floppies!).

This game looks nicest in a 256 colour mode, but it is just about playable
using mode 12, if necessary.

Usage
-----
Connect to the Internet and run the game. Clicking on the NetReact icon bar
icon will open a connect window. Enter the name and port for a machine to
connect to, or select one from the pop-up menu. If connection is successful,
then the board will be displayed on screen.

You can send messages using the 'Message' button on the main window. All of
the other buttons should be reasonably self explanatory, but if not, Acorn's
!Help application is fully supported.

How to play
-----------
Players take turns to place counters on the board. You cannot place a counter
on a square occupied by a counter of a different colour. If a square gets too
many counters on it, it will become unstable and explode, sending its
counters onto neighbouring squares, turning any counters on those squares to
the exploded square's colour. To win, you must turn all counters to your
colour.

Credits
-------
This program is built on top of Justin Fletcher's NetGame library and
Skeleton application. Without it, this game would not have been possible.

The sprites and sound effects for NetReact came from !Reaction by Phil
Norman.

History
-------
Version 0.20 : 08 Jan 1998
First version that works! No network support.

Version 0.30 : 10 Jan 1998
Basic networking (over a loopback connection) implemented.

Version 0.51 : 27 Feb 1998
Forgot about this game for a while and then rediscovered it
one cold, windy, Friday night. Fixed the redraw to make it
               faster.

Version 0.52: Later that same night
Noticed a couple of stupid mistakes: The title bar was not
updated when the board was cleared, and a typo in the game
over routine meant that green always got credited with the
               victory...

Future
------
Multiplayer (ie >2) support (This relies on NetGame supporting it in the
future.)

Make the redraw even faster.

Apart from the above items, NetReact is more or less finished. I plan to work
on some more !NetGame-enabled goodies in the near future.
