This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Conjuguez! is a learning tool for all those studying French, from complete beginners or those wanting simply to brush up for their holidays right through to those studying for exams. The program deals with the French verb system and acts both as a practice/revision aid and as a source of information about all commonly used verbs in the language.
The key aim of the software is in allowing users to work at their own pace and ability level, however rudimentary or advanced this may be.
Loading the Program
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Conjuguez! requires the Homerton font to run. This is supplied on Applications Disk 1 with RISC OS 2 and is built into machines running RISC OS 3.
Ensure that the font cache is set to at least 128K from the Task Manager window.
Double-click on the Conjuguez! icon within the directory display to install the program on to the icon bar.
The Test
~~~~~~~~
The practice element of Conjuguez! takes the form of a simple verb test. Click SELECT over the Conjuguez! icon on the icon bar to bring up the test window. Within this window click MENU to access the main menu, which has the following options:
Info (info) leads to a standard RISC OS information window
Jeu (game) controls the general operation of the game:
Arr�ter Pause
Recommencer Restart
Finir End
Commencer Begin
Temps (tenses) leads to a window allowing tense selection
Bougie (candle) allows control of Conjuguez!'s timer function
Verbes (verbs) allows certain types of verb to be selected
Aide (help) accesses Conjuguez!'s set of general help pages,
which document many aspects of formation and
usage of French verbs
Score (score) gives a tense-by-tense breakdown of the current
score
Once the option 'Commencer' has been chosen from the 'Jeu' sub-menu, the test begins. In the main window a verb, tense and person will be indicated and it is now up to the user to specify the correct verb form according to these criteria.
Once the user has typed in his/her "guess" (using the function keys or clicking on the accented characters to the left of the window as needed) the computer will then display a message relating to whether the guess was the correct form or not, and in some cases further indicating why (e.g. 'masculine plural agreement required' etc).
Clicking on the icon 'refaire un essai' allows the user to try again; 'voir r�ponse' displays the correct form of the verb and 'OK' moves on to the next question.
Tense Selection
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The window accessed via the 'Temps' option from the main menu allows the user to specify which tense(s) to practise; initially only the present tense is selected.
The demonstration version allows the present and perfect tenses to be selected; the full version contains all tenses in both active and passive forms.
Selecting the Verb File
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Conjuguez! is supplied with a series of nine graded 'verb files', two of which are supplied with this demo version. Quit any test which is currently in progress and choose 'Preferences' from the icon bar menu.
The lower part of the preferences window shows the list of verb files with a brief description of the verb each one contains. Choosing one of these verb files and clicking on 'OK' will determine the file used for subsequent tests.
Displaying Conjugations
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As well as testing the user on the forms of French verbs, the program allows them to be displayed in a window. Choosing 'Conjugation' from the icon bar menu accesses this window.
The toolbox to the left of this window allows the verb and tense to be specified (only the present and perfect and imperfect and pluperfect tenses are available on the demo version) and active or passive forms can be toggled between by clicking 'Voix active' and 'Voix passive'.
Displaying the Verb Help Information
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The full version of Conjuguez! contains over 180 pages of information relating to the modern forms and uses of French verbs and includes many examples taken from current usage.
A small selection of these pages is available on the demo version. Select 'Verb help' from the icon bar menu to access this help section.
Click on the icon resembling a letter 'I' to access the index; only those subjects not greyed out are available.
