L/Skner1

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Dear EUG,
Thanks once again, Gus, for your unending efforts
in getting my system to load your disks. Hopefully
your wonderful readers out there willbe able to help me
with my problem. More of that later. I was hoping to
get some prorams up and running for the April issue
but, alas and alack, disc problems.

First program was EUINDEX, a data- base of information
about every article in my (incomplete) collection of
Electron User magazines. I am still feverishly trying
to type all the info in. The program works, but I have
only been able to enter up to 1987 thus far.

Second wasprogram packer, a way of storing MORE than 31
iles on a DFS disk, using a 'lump them all in one big
file' technique. This was where my disk problem first
came to light. Usig the OSGBPB (transfer bytes) call to
transfer files worked, but I could only manage to extract
the first 3 files from each rchive. Not too good if
you have 50 files in an archive

Then came, in respose to a request in EUG 18, Save
Protection. A program which trapped the OSFILE vector and
inserted a checking routine to see i a file existed or
not before going ahead with the SAVE (OR *SAVE).
Unfort-unately, this worked up to the point where it
as supposed to actually save the file, and promptly
regurgitated a 'disk full' error, on an empty disk!

Lastly,a set of memory utilities;Dump, Ascii Dump,
Search, Edit and disassemble. Thesework, but I am
tring to turn them into Machine code at the moment for
relocatability (Hmmm, what a long word)

OK, Back to my disk problem. I have an AP4 on my
'standard' Electron and Plus 1 (Acorn Plus 1,no mods),
running whatever drives I happen to have connected at the
time. Currently, 2 3.5" 720K PC Drives, running on a
PC PSU (Initials and numbers abound). My problem is
that, anything I write to drive 0 in DFS is unreadable
on ANY other dive, anywhere. Anything written on any
other drive, by any Elk,is unreadable on Drive 0,
giving bad tracks all over the hop.

I even had a bash at trying ADFS, to no avail. Every time
I tried to EFORM a disk in drive 1, using the Welcome
disk in drive 0, it went ahead and corrupted the welcome
disk, there-fore, ot even letting me make a back- up
copy. Can anybody help? Please?

On the subjectof AP4's, did you know that you can access
4K of that 8K static RAM chip it carries? No?
Here's how...

It can ONLY be accessed from assembler, as you
need to switch out of BASIC to use it
Any time you use the DFS, you are at risk of
losing the data stored
Warnings out of the way, here's the good bit
First, find out which ROM your DFS's in (mine is R0)
and switch to it, using the following procedure
[OPT whatever
LDA &F4:STA oldrom \Store old ROM
LDA #newrom \DFS ROM No.
STA &F4:STA &FE05 \Swith!
\Here you have Your Program
\&B000-&C000 |
\free to use |
LDA oldrom \Load old ROM
STA &F4:ST &FE05 \Switch
RTS
.oldrom EQUB 0 ]

Accessing this area between &B000 and &C000 should,
theoretically be twice as fast as accessing normal RAM,
beause the Elk thinks it's part of a ROM.
Well, enough wafle for now from this new EUG member,
cheers for a great User group type magazine thingy
Gus, and keep up the good work!
Wayne Skinner
