!ArcFS/!Help
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

!Help file for ArcFS version 0.53 by M.Smith 15th August 1992 Software 42 are selling the full version of ArcFS 2. They can be contacted at: 26A, Bull Lane, Rayleigh, Essex. SS6 8JD. Cost : 20, 40 with site licence or 12 if upgrading from ArcFS 1 (full version - please include original disk from David Pilling). Full information on ArcFS is available as part of the 'ArcFSExtra' package. A utility to convert Spark format archives to new format archives, the !ArcFSInfo application for displaying full infomation on ArcFS objects and archives (including both full and compressed sizes) and a utility for ensuring the presence of ArcFS 2 (like RMEnsure, but will ensure that ArcFS 2, read only or read / write, and not ArcFS 1 is present.) are also included. This version of ArcFS is not P.D., but may be distributed subject to the conditions in the 'Licence' file. Many thanks to David Pilling, author of Spark and SparkPlug, for selling the full version of ArcFS 1. ArcFS has filing system number 56. My thanks to Acorn for the allocation of this filing system number and for the allocation of the SWI chunk base (&437C0). The version of ArcFSFiler supplied with this version of ArcFS (v0.53) should work with all versions of Oak's SCSI and Ian Copestake Software's IDE Hard drive software. Please note that I can no longer offer a registration service. If anyone finds ArcFS very useful then please buy the full read / write version or send a donation to one of the addresses below. Future improvements will be sent to Acorn Computing / Archimedes World / Syracuse for distribution. Please also note that I will no longer be sending out improvements automatically to P.D. libraries. Again, upgrades will be available through the above magazines. ArcFS allows the loading and opening of (compressed) files in archives as easily as files on ADFS or RamFS. It has its own ArcFS filer which displays the root directory in a filer window of any archive which is double clicked. From then on files and applications may be loaded as normal by double clicking them. Directories may be displayed also by double clicking them. ArcFS can, of cause, also be used from the command line. Facilities for loading encrypted files are included, via a preferences window which can be obtained by clicking on the ArcFS icon. An option to display the hourglass whilst ArcFS is working is also provided ArcFS 2 will load files in half the time (on average) that ArcFS 1 took. The following is a guide to performance with an ARM 2: Loading from floppies takes about 20% longer if the files are archived (files compressed to below 20% can take less time to load from an archive). Loading from a hard disk takes about 10 times as long if files are archived (remember that hard disk loading times are usually of the order of a few tenths of a second - ArcFS 2 will take a few seconds to load files from a hard disk.) Performance with an ARM 3: Loading from floppies should take about the same length of time whether or not files are archived. Loading from a hard disk should take about 5 times as long. N.B. Since I don't have an ARM 3, the ARM 3 times are based on the little information I have been given by other people. ArcFS 2 will read ArcFS archives, Spark archives and most archives produced on a P.C. by P.K. PAK or SEA arc. ***************************************************************************** All comments and suggestions for future improvement are welcome but please note that I cannot reply to letters without A STAMPED, ADDRESSED ENVELOPE. The address is: Mr. M. Smith Pen-y-dre, Riverside Ave., Broxbourne, Herts., EN10 6RD. I can be contacted more quickly 28th Sep - 18th Dec 1992 & 11th Jan - 20th Mar 1993 at: 18A, Park Road, Hayes, Middx. DO NOT SEND ANY MAIL TO REACH HERE AFTER 20TH MARCH 1993 - I WILL PROBABLY NOT RECEIVE IT. There is no postcode yet, because I don't know it! I would also, of course welcome details of any bugs discovered so that I can correct them. My JANET email address is: ee91mds2@brunel.ac.uk I can be contacted by this method Oct-Mar 1992/93, 1993/94 and Oct-Jun 1994/95. (Otherwise you will just get an automatic reply to say I'm not there, but my mail will be read when I get back.) 1991, 1992 Mark Smith
