SibDemo/Read?Me/!!Manual!!

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

FURTHER INFORMATION

--------STARTING SIBELIUS
You need to have installed the fonts and printed out a key strip, as
described in ReadMe 1st. Then double-click Select (the left-hand mouse
button) on !Sibelius6.

--------LOADING A SAMPLE SCORE
Double-click Select on one of the files in the MusicFiles directory.

Sibelius edits a single score at a time, so once you've loaded a score you
must close it before loading another (or your computer will helpfully start
another copy of Sibelius to load the score into).

--------THE 'RADAR'
Instead of having scroll bars, Sibelius uses the 'radar' at the bottom
right-hand corner of the editing window.

Press Select on it and drag to move around the score. Load the sample score
called 'Jerusalem' and see what happens when you move across several pages.

--------THE OVERVIEW WINDOW
Click on the toggle size icon at the top right of the screen. This makes the
editing window small and reveals an 'overview' window for zooming in and
out. Click Select on it to zoom in and Adjust (right-hand mouse button) to
zoom out.

You may need to make your font cache bigger to make redrawing fast - at
least 100K, preferably 200K. Also, RISC OS 3 and later are a lot quicker at
redrawing the window than RISC OS 2.

--------PLAYING MUSIC
Click on the '>'-shaped play button on the 'CD controls' at the bottom left
of the screen. If no object is selected, this plays from the start of the
score.

You can play from a particular point by first selecting a note or barline.
If you select a stave, only that stave will play.

When playing the music, MIDI is automatically used if you have a MIDI
interface.

If you press and hold Select on the fast-forward ('>>') or rewind
('<<') button, Sibelius will speed through the music. (These buttons take
a short time to react.) When rewinding, it even plays the music backwards!

To stop playing, click Select on the stop (square) or pause (double-line)
button.

When playing, all sorts of markings in the score are interpreted, including:
* Notes, chords and rests (of course!)
* Instrument names (using the General MIDI Standard by default)
* Clefs
* Key signatures
* Time signatures
* Accidentals
* Most articulation marks (e.g. accent, tenuto, bowing)
* Metronome marks
* Text dynamics (e.g. mp, very loud) - in 3 languages (English, Italian and
  French)
* Other text in these 3 languages (e.g. pizz, mute)
* Keyboard pedalling

When a stave is selected (by clicking on a blank part of it), you can change
the volume, stereo position, MIDI channel, MIDI program etc. of music on
that stave - details below.

--------ESPRESSIVO & SWING
Sibelius 7 and Sibelius 7 Student have a totally unique feature called
Espressivo. This makes the programs automatically play with natural-sounding
variations in volume, producing realistic phrasing and expression. (This is
in addition to its reading dynamic markings, accents etc. written explicitly
in the score.)

The results are so realistic that Sibelius 7 has performed in a major London
concert and on TV!

They also can add jazz 'swing' to the music - that is, play pairs of quavers
approximately as a triplet.

--------SOUND-STAGE
Sibelius 7 & 7 Student also automatically position the instruments correctly
in 3-D space, as if on a concert stage in orchestral layout. Not only are
the pan (left-to-right) positions correct, but also the balance (corrected
for distance) and the relative reverb (a subtle acoustical cue by which you
can tell whether a sound is close or far from its relative echo).

--------SPEAKER VOICES
If you don't have MIDI, you can set any stave to play using any speaker
voice your computer has. This demo version automatically includes a rather
good sampled piano sound called Sibelius-Piano (other ones come with the
full version).

To change the voice used by a stave, select the stave, and from the Play
menu go into Speaker voice. Click on the voice you want. By default all
instruments use the piano sound.

(Technical note: Sibelius implements 'dynamic voice allocation', which
means that you don't have to predefine a particular number of channels to be
used by each stave; Sibelius will switch the voices around on the channels
as necessary to make the most of the 8 simultaneous notes available.)

--------MIDI PROGRAM NUMBERS
'MIDI program numbers' specify what sounds MIDI keyboards use when playing
back.

By default, Sibelius assumes your keyboard complies with the 'General MIDI
Standard' (a standard list of 128 sounds). Many sound modules and some
keyboards comply with this (and if so usually say General MIDI or GM or GS
on the front).

Sibelius has a few other 'patches' (numberings of sounds) for other MIDI
equipment, under Equipment in the Play menu. For example, if your keyboard
is not General MIDI compatible you might want to try simply 'MIDI Piano',
which switches all staves to Piano (program number 1).

Alternatively, you can set up your own 'patch' to suit whatever keyboard you
have. Simply select each stave and type in the program number you want to
use for that stave under Play>MIDI program. Your keyboard's manual will have
a list of the sound it produces for each program number. (If your keyboard's
manual lists its program numbers starting at 0, switch on Play>
Choices>Program no.s start at 0.)

--------EDITING OBJECTS
You can select notes (by clicking on the notehead itself), rests, staves,
barlines, text and so on using Select as normal.

The basic editing operations are shown at the top of the Edit menu, but you
are STRONGLY recommended not to use these at all because there are extremely
fast 'shortcuts' instead.

The most important operation is clicking the right-hand mouse button
(Adjust) to copy an object, such as a note or a stave.

Most objects can also be dragged by holding down Select. Try dragging a note
up and down - then re-click and try dragging it left and right!

You can also move notes up & down, or left & right, using the arrow keys.

--------CREATING NOTES WITH THE MOUSE
Select an existing rest, e.g. a bar rest. To select a bar rest you'll need
to click exactly on the little black rectangle (which will go red),
otherwise you may select the whole stave instead.

Then press one of the note-value function keys (e.g. F5-F9). Notice that
Sibelius takes care of rests after the note for you.

F10 adds a rhythmic dot - add more than one by pressing it repeatedly, and
remove by re-pressing the note key.

--------CHANGING PITCH WITH THE MOUSE
Press Select on the notehead, and drag up or down - or use the arrow keys.
Shift-arrow shifts notes by an octave.

Double-clicking on a chord selects all the notes in the chord, so you can
drag or copy the whole chord at once.

--------COPYING NOTES
Select a note, point to where you want it to be copied to, and click Adjust.
Keep clicking Adjust in different places to get more notes.

Copying a note copies its length and articulation marks (staccato, tenuto
etc), but takes the pitch from where you're pointing.

--------ACCIDENTALS (sharps, flats etc.)
Select a note (by clicking on the notehead) and press the relevant function
key. Remove by pressing the key again.

Shift-Ctrl-F3 'respells' accidentals (e.g. rewrites C# as Db).

--------ARTICULATION MARKS (staccato, tenuto etc.)
Just as for accidentals.

--------CREATING RESTS
Select a note and press F11 to turn it into a rest.

To create a rest of a particular length, select a note or rest, type the
note-value function key for the length you want (e.g. F7 for crotchet rest),
and then F11 (to turn it into a crotchet rest).

To make a bar back into a bar rest (which is not quite the same as a
semibreve rest), double-click on an empty bit of the bar to select it all,
then press F11.

Like notes and everything else, you can copy a selected rest by clicking
Adjust.

--------CREATING CHORDS WITH THE MOUSE
Create a note for one of the pitches, point to another pitch above or
below that note, and click Adjust.

Try dragging individual notes of a chord up and down through the chord. Try
doing this again after adding a sharp or flat to each note.

--------TWO PARTS ON ONE STAVE
To get two independent parts on one stave - with note-stems up and down -
put in the upper part first, then copy a note into the lower part using
Alt-Adjust (i.e. hold down Alt while clicking the right-hand mouse button).

This will put the new note in with its stem down, and flip the existing
notes so their stems all point up. The lower part will be padded out to the
end of the bar with rests. You can drag these rests down to avoid notes in
the upper part.

Put more notes into the lower part either by turning rests into notes using
the function keys, or by copying more notes into the lower part using
Alt-Adjust. Alternatively, if you have a MIDI keyboard you can just play
notes/chords in on that - see 'Step-time input', below.

--------GETTING MARKINGS FROM THE MENU
Time signatures, clefs, key signatures, guitar chords etc. can be obtained
by first choosing from the menu in the obvious way, then pointing to where
you want them to end up and clicking Select. These markings are found within
the Symbols and Rhythm menus.

You don't have to reuse the menu to get an object if you can see one like it
on the screen. Just select this object and click Adjust to copy it. This is
the ultimate instant 'toolbox' for getting any marking you want, fast.

--------TEXT
Within the Text menu are numerous text 'styles' for different types of text.
For instance, Expression covers text dynamics (e.g. 'ff') and markings such
as 'legato'. To write a piece of text in a particular style, choose it from
the menu and click Select on the paper to position the caret. Then type - or
click Menu again to get a list of useful words.

Lyrics operate in a special way which we won't explain here (except to say
that Sibelius automatically positions the words under notes for you).

Each text style is preset to a suitable font, size etc. On Sibelius 7
Student and Sibelius 7, these styles are fully editable, and have many
parameters.

--------LINES
This means slurs, ties, phrase-marks, hairpins, trills etc.

Choose off the Lines menu, press (and hold down) Select at where the
left-hand end should go, drag right, and release.

You can modify lines by pulling the ends or the middle.

If the line goes off the end of one stave and onto the next, drag directly
to where the line ends (you needn't do two halves). Alternatively, drag to
just off the right of the stave, and the line will poke onto the start of
the next one.

--------COPYING/DELETING BARS
Double-clicking on a stave selects a whole bar of that stave in order to
copy it (with Adjust) or delete it (with Delete). Triple-clicking selects a
whole bar in all instruments.

Having double- or triple-clicked, press Shift-Select on another bar to
select all bars in between.

--------ADJUSTING STAVES
Click on a blank section of a stave to select it; drag it up and down to
adjust the gap between staves. This is a very dramatic effect!

--------ADJUSTING SPACING
Although you seldom need to do this, you can drag notes, rests and
barlines left and right. Make sure you start off by dragging horizontally
- you are prevented from dragging vertically at the same time.

Alternatively, just press the left or right arrow keys. Shift-arrow does
larger steps.

--------SETTING BAR LENGTH
Bar length is determined by the current time signature, so put a time
signature in BEFORE putting music into subsequent bars. (You can delete the
time signature again afterwards if you want to produce an upbeat bar or an
irregular bar.)

Once a bar has any music in at all, its length its fixed from then on.

--------TRANSPOSING
To transpose the whole score, click on the paper so nothing is selected,
then go into the Edit>Transpose window. Choose the interval you want, along
with 'Up' or 'Down', and '+/- semitone' to get (e.g.) a minor 3rd or an
augmented 4th. Switch on 'Transpose keys' to transpose the key signatures
too.

Don't transpose so far that instruments go way outside their range (or
Sibelius will complain!)

You can also transpose any smaller passage of music by first selecting the
appropriate bars (see Copying/deleting bars, above).

Sibelius deals with the special case of transposing instruments all by
itself. You can input the score either at sounding pitch or transposed
pitch; for written pitch, switch on House style>Key signatures>Transposing
score before you start, and all the key signatures will adjust accordingly.

When you play a transposed score, Sibelius corrects for all the
transposing instruments so they sound at the pitch at which they would
actually play.

When you extract parts for transposing instruments, Sibelius automatically
transposes them by the correct amount (if the score was in concert pitch).

--------REFORMATTING
Load any score and choose Score format... off the File menu. Try changing
the page orientation, or the size of the staves, then click on OK. Sibelius
will instantly rewrite the music to fit the new format. It is still instant
even for scores hundreds of pages long!

This allows you to try out different formats, or produce different versions
of the same music (conductor's score, miniature score etc). It also means
that, by making small adjustments to the stave size, you can make a score
fit exactly into a given number of pages, or remove a half-filled page at
the end.

--------PART EXTRACTION
This is a very sophisticated feature. Try loading Narnia and select a
stave. Then, from the menu, choose Edit>Extract part.

The instrument in question will be extracted from the score, together with
all relevant markings (e.g. dynamics and tempo marks). Bar rests will be
grouped together (but split at rehearsal marks etc). And the part will be
completely reformatted from scratch so that it ends up tidy. Parts are even
automatically transposed if necessary for transposing instruments such as
Clarinet in Bb.

Part extraction takes a few seconds at most - compared with rival Mac and
PC programs on which it can take literally hours (or even days!), and
usually produces a part which needs a great deal of checking and correcting.

----------------- STARTING YOUR OWN SCORE ------------------

To start an empty score, close any you've got loaded already, then click
Select on the Sibelius icon on the icon bar.

--------CREATING AN INSTRUMENT
Choose an instrument from within Woodwind, Brass etc. in the Instruments
menu. Then click Adjust near the top of the first sheet of paper.

Only create instruments the first time this way; you don't have to tell
Sibelius to create more staves thereafter - it will do so whenever
necessary. All you have to do is tell it when you want more bars of music
(see Adding bars, below).

--------TYPING IN MUSIC
Select a bar rest and press F5-F9 (say) to get a note, as before.

Drag it to the pitch you want.

Then you can just click Adjust to copy it to create further notes. Use the
function keys to change the note-value, accidental etc. of each note as you
go along. When you run out of bars, see Adding bars (below).

With MIDI input (detailed below) you can instead play the music in, directly
from a MIDI keyboard.

--------ADDING BARS
Choose Rhythm>Add bar from the menu - or just type Ctrl-A. Hold Ctrl-A down
to add lots of bars.

As the score gets longer and longer, Sibelius will spread the music out
onto more staves or pages as necessary - you don't have to ask it to.

Of course, you can type in music in any order - left to right, top to
bottom, even backwards!

               -------- MIDI INPUT & MIDI FILES ----------

--------MIDI INPUT
Sibelius supports two ways of inputting from a MIDI keyboard - step-time and
Flexi-time. In either case, you will need to have a MIDI interface and any
MIDI keyboard.

With step-time input, you play the pitches on the keyboard and specify the
rhythm by pressing the appropriate function keys as you go along.
(Sibelius will ignore how long you actually hold the notes down on the
keyboard.) Step-time input is useful if you're not a keyboard player or if
you don't wanting to try to play the rhythm fluently.

With Flexi-time input, you play the music at the MIDI keyboard, and Sibelius
notates both the pitches and the rhythm as you go along. As long as you can
play the rhythm reasonably accurately, Sibelius will understand it and
notate it well. Uniquely, Sibelius can even tell if you're varying speed (as
you inevitably will), and correct for this!

Sibelius currently implements MIDI step-time input, which means you can
use a MIDI keyboard (instead of the mouse) to indicate the pitches and the
function keys to specify the rhythm.

--------STEP-TIME INPUT
Simply select a rest, and play notes or chords on the keyboard. They will go
in as crotchets on that stave.

If while you're playing you press (say) the quaver function key (F8), the
selected note and all those you play thereafter will be quavers. So you only
have to press a function key when the note-value changes.

As with mouse input, articulation marks such as staccato are copied from one
note to the next.

Sibelius decides whether to write black notes as (e.g.) G# or Ab depending
on the key signature, but you can press Shift-Ctrl-F3 to 'respell' any note.

Sibelius adds extra bars at the end when you fill up all the existing bars.

You can change the pitch of any existing note/chord by simply selecting it
and playing the new note/chord on the keyboard.

--------FLEXI-TIME INPUT
Flexi-time is Sibeliuss unique super-intelligent real-time MIDI input.

'Real-time' input on other computer programs is when the program tries to
work out both the pitch and the rhythm of music played on a keyboard, and
turn it into tidy notation. The big problem is rhythm: people never play
rhythms quite as notated because of unconscious rubato (variation in tempo),
so real-time input can end up with notes tied to extra hemidemisemiquavers
and other ridiculous things.

A standard but crude improvement is produced by quantization: this is where
you tell a program to round all note-values to the nearest semiquaver (or
whatever unit you specify). The trouble is this only improves the situation
for relatively simple music and if you speed up or slow down naturally as
you play ('rubato'), the computer will get out with you in any case and
produce garbage. With Flexi-time, however, Sibelius detects if youre doing
rubato and compensates accordingly.

RECORDING
* Load the music file called Flexi-time (which is set up with a
piano). Change the key and time signature if necessary.

* Make sure a rest in the upper stave is selected

* Click on the circular red record button on the CD controls (bottom left of
the editing window). Alternatively, just press Ctrl-F (for Flexi-time)

* A window appears with various options (detailed below) which you can
  change if you like

* Click on Record

* Sibelius will start ticking a metronome to count you in (4 beats in by
default). Wait for all the countdown beats before you start playing!

* Start playing smoothly at the keyboard. As you play, the music youre
playing will appear in notation on the screen. If you speed up or slow
down, the metronome speeds up or slows down to follow you. (See Hints &
tips below for detail on how to get the best results.)

* When youve finished recording, click on the square stop button on the CD
  controls.

Sibeliuss ability to follow your tempo requires a lot of intelligence on
its part, as it has to understand the difference between faster tempo and
shorter note-values. No other computer program can do this you have to
adopt a special mechanical playing style if you want to produce even
half-sensible-looking notation!

Read the hints & tips below, and the list of Flexi-time options, to see how
to get the most out of Flexi-time.

HINTS & TIPS
* Always play legato (smoothly)! If you want music to be notated staccato,
play it legato and add the staccato dots afterwards. (Sibelius assumes that
if youre playing short notes then you want them notated that way.)
* People are often sloppy about placing notes simultaneously when playing a
chord. If you 'spread' chords too much, Sibelius will write what you
  played!
* If you find Sibelius seems not to be following your tempo, try
  halving the beat-length (e.g. use quaver = 200 instead of crotchet = 100),
  or use Molto rubato.
* If Sibeliuss beat gets out with you as youre playing, stop and go back
to the point where it got out (and maybe try Molto rubato instead). If you
just blunder on regardless, Sibelius may well get back in time again, but
correcting the rhythm will take far longer than just playing it again
  (Sam).
* Sibelius does not understand triplets if you play them using Flexi-time.
Go back and correct them afterwards.

FLEXITIME OPTIONS
Split note - like most music programs, when inputting onto two staves
Sibelius decides which stave to put notes onto on the basis of their pitch.
So for piano music, youd typically ask Sibelius to put all notes below
middle C into the left-hand stave, and middle C and above into the
right-hand stave. In this case, middle C is the split note. On the
Flexi-time window, the split note is specified as a number 60 means middle
C, 61 means the C# just above that, 72 means an octave above middle C and so
on. (This is a standard way of numbering pitches with MIDI.)

If the musics range varies a lot e.g. both hands low down for a few bars,
then both hands high up you should input it in sections, changing the
split note when necessary, rather than all in one go. This is because it is
not quick to correct notes afterwards if Sibelius has put them onto the
wrong stave.

Rubato - 'rubato' is the Italian term for varying tempo slightly
while playing. Playing in strict time is called non rubato.

Rubato is the standard setting. Molto rubato assumes your tempo is likely to
be varying quite a lot. Suitable for inputting rhythmically simple music and
for not-very-good keyboard players. Non rubato assumes youre playing very
accurately. Suitable for getting a precise (but hard-to-read) notation of
rhythmically complex music.

Metronome - lets you choose the beat-length and initial speed of the
metronome. Once you start playing, however, Sibelius will speed up or slow
down to follow your tempo.

Countdown - lets you choose how many beats in Sibelius will give you
before it starts recording.

Tick - Speaker tick produces a tick from your computers loudspeaker,
whereas MIDI tick produces it from your keyboard or sound module (if you
have one). MIDI tick only produces a proper-sounding tick if your MIDI
equipment is General MIDI compatible.

Staves - choose 1 to input onto one stave, 2 to input onto two staves. The
staves can belong to different instruments if you like, so long as theyre
adjacent.

Voices - Sibelius lets you play chords with as many notes as you like. The
voices option lets you input some notes with stems up and some with stems
down (as in hymns). (No space here for details!)

--------MIDI FILE IMPORTING
MIDI files are music files in a standard format called the Standard MIDI
File format, in fact. Lots of music programs and some keyboards can create
(export) MIDI files and understand (import) them. Nowadays, you can even buy
MIDI files of your favourite music on floppy disc from your local music
shop. You can use MIDI files to import music from most other music programs
(on any computer) into Sibelius.

MIDI files are designed for playing music back rather than notating and
printing it. Hence they dont include lots of notational information, such
as slurs, articulation marks and page layout. Even the distinction between
F# and Gb is ignored.

Many programs can convert MIDI files into music notation of a sort, but this
can take them a long time to do, and the end results are normally such a
mess that you have to spend many further hours tidying the whole thing up
before its in a fit state to print. However, Sibelius does a good job of
turning MIDI files into notation in a matter of seconds. The end result is
tidy, well laid-out and virtually ready to print.

To import a MIDI file into Sibelius:

* close any Sibelius files youre using
* if the MIDI file doesn't have the MIDI file icon (a note with MIDI written across in red), point to the file icon, pop up the menu, go into
File '...'>Set type>, and type in MIDI (or FD4) followed by Return.
* double-click on the MIDI file icon. A window with various options (not
  explained here) will appear
* click on Import
* after a few seconds or a couple of minutes (depending on the size of the
file), the music will appear magically on the screen as a Sibelius file,
which you can play, edit, and extract parts from in the normal way.

If the file apparently has things wrong with it (e.g. wrong instruments,
clefs, key signature, rhythm) then the MIDI file does not include all of the
information it should do - and lots of programs produce 'garbage' MIDI
files! The special options on the MIDI file import window let you correct
the file as it imports so that it will be all neat and tidy. We won't
explain all the options here.

--------MIDI FILE EXPORTING
Sibelius 7 and Sibelius 7 Student also export MIDI files. This lets you
transfer music from Sibelius to most other music programs (on any computer).

When it creates a MIDI file, Sibelius also uses its clever Espressivo and
Swing options to the music to make it more realistic. This means you can
even use Sibelius as a 'MIDI file improver' - just import a MIDI file,
switch on a few options and export a better version!
