This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk --------------------------- June 1992 --------- This is the June '92 issue of Archimedes World. We select only the best software for publication to make sure you have genuinely useful programs. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully. All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1992. They may not be copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. They should NOT be distributed as Public Domain. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original. Archived The '!AWJune92' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWJune92' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying Software When the '!AWJune92' application icon is dragged from the archive window to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software uncompressed from the RAM disk it will need to be set to at least 1700k. If you have 2 Megabytes or more of RAM then you can create an 800K RAM disk and copy the 'June92' archive to there. This greatly speeds up the loading of software from the archive. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by choosing the 'Open viewer' item from the Waiter disk menu. Once the application's directory viewer has opened up you can then drag the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied. They can then be loaded without using the Waiter disk menu or !ArcFS. If you have any difficulties running software from the archive then it is best to copy the programs to another disk and try running them from there. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our built-in text display module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs and read any instructions. Some items on the main menu lead to a sub-menu while others run applications or display text. To select a menu item click the select button once over its icon. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu. The Demo 4Mation have produced yet another fabulous graphics application. Vector is the aptly named new drawing package which is as easy to use as Draw and yet has much more power under the bonnet. We present an exclusive working demo which lets you find out exactly what Vector can do. The only option that is disabled is Save for obvious reasons. We are sure that once you have tried the demo you will not be able to resist buying the complete package. The Programs Money Help allows you to type in a sum of money in pounds and pence. It will then display the correct arrangement of notes and coins which make up that sum. It may be useful for anyone who works as a cashier by showing the best way to give change. Zap A Rok is an updated version of the classic Asteroids arcade game. It has all the addictive appeal of the original but with the kind of graphics and sound you would expect from an Acorn RISC OS machine. Drop is a brain teasing action game in which you drop balls through holes onto a set of platforms. The ball rolls along each layer and falls through further holes. Gates below each hole cause the ball to roll either left or right. The object is to fill all the holes at the bottom of the screen with balls. It sounds easy but when the gates are facing the wrong direction it becomes very challenging. Flash Find is a helpful desktop utility which makes the Caret flash in any of 16 colours. This helps you to see where the Caret is on the screen. Not only that but it also will show you where the Caret is by moving the pointer directly to its position, even if it is not in the visible part of a window. Word Pairs is a beautifully presented new twist to the classic 'find the hidden pairs' puzzle game. Once you have found a pair of tiles they are removed from the grid to display part of a word. If you can guess what the word is before it is fully revealed you score bonus points. Also removing tiles in set patterns gains you extra points. Word Pairs is great fun for players of all ages. In the PD section there are two programs by Richard Hallas. Jumper is a desktop toy which displays an animation on the icon bar. TinyClock is a clock which shows the time on the icon bar and in the Acorn directory are a new system and outline font. Regular Features The programs which are described in the All At C article this month are supplied on this cover disk. In the ArchiMedia section there are details of new products available for the Archimedes. Also there are forms for subscriptions, software submissions and back issue orders which can be loaded into a text editor, filled in and printed out. Viruses We take viruses seriously here at Archimedes World so our cover disks are checked thoroughly to ensure that they are virus free. We can only check for known viruses and there is the small possibility of new, undocumented viruses slipping through our checking procedure. Earn �800 We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. We are interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens, animations, clip art sprite/Draw files, music, sound samples, games, demos and anything else that is interesting and original.
