This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Introduction
============

This program is basically, several programs in one. It is a program I wrote 
for myself and includes some of the programs I use most. However, the program
expanded and a friend suggested that I make it freeware and pass it around.
  
Disclaimer (Boring Bit)
=======================

Everyone else has one, so I thought I might as well put one in here! This
program is provided 'As is' and I, the Author can not and will not accept any
responsibility for any loss or damage to any data / software / hardware that
arises from the use or misuse of this program. This program is Freeware, and
may be freely distributed as long as no charge is made (with the exception of
PD libraries who may charge for time, postage and packing, and the media on
which it is distributed, etc.). Copies that are passed on to others MUST be
complete, with ALL files unaltered and intact.

If you have any suggestions or comments to make about this program, or you
just want someone to write to, then please use my address at the end of this
file. A disc with some software on it, and/or a five (or a fifty) pound
(sterling only please) note would also be appreciated, and would guarantee
that I continue to work on this, and other programs. If Acorn want, they can
send me a Risc PC!

Usage
=====

This program is a RISC OS 3 only application.

To run this program, double click on the !Utils icon. WIMP Utilities uses  
288 Kbytes to run. If everything is hunkydory, after a short time it will
install on the icon bar. To use the utilities available, either use the main
menu on the icon bar, or you can click on the icon bar which will bring up
the main menu window. Clicking on the buttons in the main menu with select
will bring the appropriate window up and close the main window, but clicking
on a button with adjust will keep the main window open.

PLEASE NOTE : Some utilities are only available from the icon bar menu.

!Help is supported to some extent.

The Utilities available
=======================

1.  ***A SoundTracker module player***

    This is a simple SoundTracker player, which will play most types of Sound
    Tracker file types. To play a file, simply bring the SoundTracker window 
    up from either the menu window, or the icon bar menu, drop a SoundTracker
    file on the WIMP Utilities icon on the icon bar and the SoundTracker
    window will open, or drag the file to the SoundTracker window. You can   
    Fast Forward, Rewind, Pause, and Stop the track. To clear the currently
    loaded track from memory, click on the Clear button. It is also possible
    to mute the channels using the four option buttons in the top left of the
    window. To bring up volume and stereo control click on the Prefs icon,
    and click on OK to confirm your settings. By using Adjust on the OK, the
    preferences window will stay up, allowing you to change the options again
    if they are not to you taste, without having to bring the window up
    again.
    
    NOTE : If you want to see the VU Bars, click on the button BEFORE you
           load a tune, otherwise, for some obscure reason, the computer
           crashes. Hopefully, this will be fixed soon.
           Also, I don't think this will work on a Risc PC. This is due to
           the SoundTracker module used. If anyone knows about an updated
           Risc PC version, could they send me a copy?
    
2.  ***A `*Commands from a window' window***

    This little utility lets you perform CLI task from a window. You can         recall the previous task by clicking on the 'Previous' icon. If output is    needed, then a window will be opened showing any output.
    
3.  ***System Info***

    This useless(?) utility will tell you trivial information about you          computer system. When using the dhrystones calculator, click on the          Calculate icon and let it do its stuff.
        
4.  ***Network Utilities***

    This will allow you to logon to a fileserver, notify stations, add
    fileservers to the current list and other things if I can think of them.
    
5.  ***Screen Saver***

    To use this, simply select the time delay, the effect you want, and
    select the "Screen Saver On" option, then click on OK. To turn it off,
    deselect the "Screen Saver Off" option and click on OK. More effects will
    be added when I have the time.
    
6.  ***JPEG Picture Decompressor***

    This is a simple JPEG image decompressor, which will convert JPEG files  
    into GIF, Targa, PBMPlus, or Windows BMP formats for conversion in
    !Translator or !ChangeFSI (I may even consider doing a conversion routine
    myself at a later date!). To use it select the output file type you want,
    and any options you want (see later), drop the output directory into the
    icon, or type in the path yourself if your a masochist (or it is a root  
    directory), (I chose this method, and not the standard save box, as it   
    allowed multiple conversions without having to drag the file each time,      if enough people dislike, I will change it to a standard save style),
    then drop the JPEG file onto the JPEG icon and it will saved in the the 
    output directory using the same name as the original JPEG file.
     
      Options
    
             Verbose - This simply lets you know what's going on during the                         conversion process.
      Disable Dither - Believe it or not, this disables the dithering of the                        final picture.
           Greyscale - Again, incredibly enough, this converts the output                           image into greyscale, and uses less memory as well!
          Low memory - If you want a colour output, but are short in the
                       memory department, use this. The quality of the output
                       will drop slightly. If you want high quality, but
                       don't need colour, choose the greyscale option
                       instead.
         
7.  ***Desktop Sprites***

    This allows the quick `*Iconsprite'ing of a sprite file* for use on the      desktop (e.g. for making prettier icons than the ones you already have),     and allows you to add backdrops to you pinboard.
    You can also load a sprite file for use on the window borders (tools)
    by dragging the file into the Toolsprites box.
    
    PLEASE NOTE : If you are using !Larger or any other backdrop program that                  uses `*Backdrop' other than the Acorn pinboard, you should                   click on Larger Backdrop, or any backdrops you load will be                  put on the Acorn pinboard, and not !Larger (or whatever).                    This simply *RMKill's the pinboard module. The option                        will be greyed out if the module has already been killed.
    
    * This can also be done by dragging a sprite file to the WIMP Utilities        icon on the icon bar.
    
8.  ***File Squasher***

    To use this, drag the file you want to squash to the drop-in icon, and
    the save box will become highlighted. Drag the squashed file to where 
    you want to save it. If you have the `Overwrite source' option selected,
    then the save will be done automagically, but be warned, the original
    will be erased, with the squashed version put in it's place.
    
    To unsquash the file, drag the squashed file to the drop-in icon, and 
    save out again. This will save the unsquashed version. Again, the
    `Overwrite source' option will do everything for you.
    
    Unlike an image filing system, like ArcFS, the squashed files cannot
    be used directly, and must be unsquashed first. Therefore, this kind
    of compression is ideal for backups, where common use is not necessary.

9.  ***Draw Renderer***

    This merely displays drawfiles in a window. Just drop a drawfile into        the window and it will be drawn. Use the scale buttons and bounding boxes    buttons if you want/need to.

10. ***Audio CD Player***

    This allows you to play audio CDs using your CD ROM drive. Simply put a
    CD in the drive, and click on this option. You will be presented with
    a control window where you will find most CD player options.
    
11. ***Filer Utilities***
    
    There are several filer utilities which are only available on the icon       bar menu, an easy to use disc formatter being one of them. This is           probably the only one that needs explaining, simply select the format of     the disc, the name of the disc and the drive. Then click on OK.        
    
12. ***Miscellaneous***

    These utilities are also only available from the icon bar menu, and 
    contains various utilities which cannot be classified into groups, for
    example, an option to open Printer$Path. You can then just save a text
    file into this and it will send it to the printer. This will be added
    to as time goes by.

13. ***More...?***

    If you can think of anything else that you would like this program to do,    then don't hesitate to contact me at the address at the end of this file.
    
Things to be added/altered at a later date (hopefully!) :

1) GIF/Sprite/TIFF etc. renderer, like ChangeFSI.
2) Digital Symphony file player. 
3) Sprite file movie player. 
4) Artworks file renderer. 
5) Faster draw file renderer.
6) JPEG Compressor
7) More JPEG decompression options (for speed and/or memory).
8) More screen saver effects.

If any of these would be useful then please let me know, otherwise I won't   bother with them.

Notes
=====

 I am not sure if this program adheres to the Acorn Style Guidelines, as I
do not have the PRM's, if you see anything that is misbehaving in Acorn's
eyes, please let me know so I can do something about it. Also, if you find
any bugs or just niggly things, please point them out to me so I can fix
them. Please tell me what the exact conditions were, including computer,
OS version, memory, etc. and the error message that appeared as well as the
version number of WIMP Utilities.
