This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

ArtFiler Version 2.01 ====================== ArtFiler is an immensely useful utility for cataloguing and displaying files created in Draw, Equasor, Paint or ArtWorks. It is particularly suited to hard disc owners who may have files strewn randomly about their hard drive and typically spend a Sunday afternoon searching every directory to find that precious file. To load ArtFiler, double click on its icon. The ArtFiler icon will install itself on the left hand side of the icon bar along with the other filer utilities. The icon bar menu has two menu options - Info and Quit - which are self-explanatory. Click on the ArtFiler icon on the icon bar to open the ArtFiler window. The name of any ArtWorks files, Draw files, Sprite files or Equasor equations dragged into this window will appear on the list of the left hand side of the window together with a small version of the associated file type. Clicking on a name will locate and load the file, displaying it in the window on the right hand side of the window. ArtFiler also searches through directories and subsequent subdirectories which are dragged onto it. The Fixed aspect ratio button toggles between fitting the display to the whole display window and scaling the X and Y dimensions properly with respect to each other - with this off, the image may look distorted. Clicking on the Full size view button will open a window containing the drawing/sprite/equation at its 'proper' size. This may be printed out using the RISC OS printer drivers by using the menu associated with this window. The other ArtFiler menu may be opened by clicking Menu over the main window. The Export menu item allows the currently displayed file to be saved out of the program, either to disc or to another appliation via RAM transfer. The Save list option allows you to save the current list as an ArtFiler ArtList (filetype &178) which may be edited using !Edit. The number at the top of the file gives the number of files included - you may remove and add filenames to this list but remember to increment or decrement the number at the top appropriately. The Clear list option clears the current list of catalogued art. Individual entries may be removed by clicking Menu with the mouse pointer over the entry you wish to remove and then selecting the Remove 'Filename' item where 'Filename' is the name of the file to be removed from the list. There may be a very short delay after this whilst ArtFiler 'reshuffles' the list. File info gives the type, size, date and full pathname of a the selected file. The ArtWorks detail option allows you to set the accuracy of the redraw on ArtWorks files and hence the speed of redraw. Users of ArtWorks will be familiar with this idea. The Open viewer item opens the directory viewer containing the currently displayed file. The application is very useful for anyone who regularly uses art files. Load up ArtFiler, drag any clipart you may have onto the window, save the list as a text file. Whenever you use Impression etc. next, load up ArtFiler, drag in the list of clipart, select the file you want then simply drag and drop the artwork into Impression or the appropriate application. Current limitations =================== ArtFiler imposes a maximum limit of 2048 files per list - if(!) you have more files than this, load up another ArtFiler and make another catalogue. ArtFiler cannot cope with 'moving' files - in fact it operates in a similar fashion to the RISC OS 3 backdrop - drag a file onto the backdrop and then physically move it to another directory (or delete it) and the icon becomes useless.
